Dr. Buse\u2019s practice combines clinical care, research and education. He has received international recognition for innovative clinical care and efforts at prevention of type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and their complications. He practices patient-centered care focusing on developing treatment programs in collaboration with patients that meet their needs and expectations. He works with teams of investigators in diabetes clinical trials, comparative effectiveness research and translation of basic science research towards clinical application. Current projects focus in novel treatments including development of glucose-responsive insulin, cardiovascular safety and efficacy of diabetes drugs and developing the evidence-base for treatment guidelines of the future in diabetes care.<\/p>\n

I am a big believer in “patient-centered care” where the patient is interested in efforts to improve their health and I provide coaching to help them achieve their aims. It is not a matter of doing everything possible but developing a sustainable program of eating, activity, living\/loving, medications and monitoring that gets people where they want to be for whatever timeline they want to pursue. Fundamentally the health care team’s role is teaching, mentorship, providing options and support. The patient is the boss and ultimately responsible. Some patients want to be told what to do and then usually cannot do it. I like to develop a plan in partnership with patients and work on improving it over time based on how things go.<\/p>\n
In our research programs we focus on quality and safety. We want to develop the best treatments and approaches to diabetes and weight management. We do that in partnership with our UNC team as well as scientists and companies across the globe. To paraphrase a popular advertisement, the UNC diabetes\/weight management clinical trials unit does not make the products, we make them better. UNC has played some role in the development of virtually all aspects of diabetes and weight management over the last 30 years and continues to work on better treatments and prevention of diabetes, overweight and their complications today.
