DESCRIPTION:Alan Hinderliter\, MD\n  \nDr. Hinderliter’s principal clinical interests are hypertension\, echocardiography\, valvular heart disease\, and preventive cardiology. He is a hypertension specialist and sees patients with high blood pressure that is difficult to control in the multidisciplinary UNC Hypertension Clinic. He serves as the medical director of the UNC Hospitals echocardiography laboratory and provides imaging support to the structural heart disease program.  \nDr. Hinderliter’s research has focused on the effects of exercise\, diet\, and weight loss on high blood pressure\, novel therapies for resistant hypertension\, and the relationships of high blood pressure to cardiovascular structure and function. His research laboratory is actively engaged in studying the effects of disease processes\, pharmacologic therapies\, and lifestyle interventions on vascular endothelial function\, and on investigating the cardiovascular manifestations of air pollution. \n  \nRick Stouffer\, MD\n  \nGeorge A. Stouffer\, MD is the Ernest and Hazel Craige Distinguished Professor of Medicine\, Professor of Biomedical Engineering\, Chief of Cardiology and Co-director of the McAllister Heart Institute at the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\, North Carolina\, USA. He is actively involved in clinical and basic science research. His basic science research is in the areas of regulation of smooth muscle cell growth\, thrombin generation\, and renal artery stenosis. His clinical research is in coronary artery disease\, percutaneous coronary intervention and myocardial infarction and he has very involved in research examining the optimal use of CYP2C19 genotyping to selected anti-platelet therapy. He is the author or editor of four textbooks and more than 180 scientific publications and has received research funding from NIH\, AHA and numerous foundations.

In her clinical time\, she enjoys working with residents on the Medicine Infectious Disease service and sees both HIV and general ID patients in her Eastowne clinic. Her research lies at the interface of clinical and molecular studies on malaria. She has published widely on the emergence of multi-drug resistant malaria in Southeast Asia. Her current projects focus on 1) determinants of malaria transmission from human hosts to mosquitos and 2) the epidemiology and relapse patterns of Plasmodium ovale in East Africa.

In his current role\, he focuses on enhancing existing care processes and models – while developing new ones – that support the department’s 600-plus physicians and advanced practice providers and that better meet the needs of the various patient populations they serve. \nDr. Dorn’s clinical practice focuses on functional GI and motility disorders\, for which he has served as an investigator on numerous clinical trials\, co-authored national practice guidelines\, and has been consistently named to the list of Best Doctors in America. He is an experienced physician administrator who previously led and managed one of the nation’s premier academic gastroenterology practices. He broadly understands the forces shaping healthcare\, serving on national gastroenterology practice committees\, and frequently presenting and publishing on healthcare delivery. \nDr. Dorn received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan\, his medical degree from the State University of New York at Brooklyn\, and his Masters of Public Health and Masters of Health Care Administration from the UNC School of Public Health. SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds\, Victor Garcia-Martinez\, PhD - "The COVID-19 Pandemic: A View From the Bench."
DESCRIPTION:Victor Garcia-Martinez\, PhD\n  \nDr. Garcia uses humanized mouse models\, including recently developed humanized-lung mice\, to study the pathogenesis of human-specific viruses and therapeutic interventions. Dr. Garcia is using these models to study an array of human respiratory pathogens including RSV\, CMV\, influenza\, MERS\, SARS\, SARS-CoV-2 and tuberculosis.  He has trained over 13 PhD students 40 postdoctoral fellows (past and present). His trainees hold positions in industry\, government and academic institutions. Dr. Garcia is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and his contribution to Inclusion and Diversity is recognized by the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Society for Cell Biology. Dr. Garcia is also the Director of the International Center for the Advancement of Translational Science. \nThroughout evolution\, humans have been challenged by viral pathogens new to the species. For the most part\, our immune system mounts an adequate response that protects us from the fatal consequences of infection. However\, in some instances viruses can circumvent the immune system and cause fatal diseases such as cancer (EBV\, KSHV\, HCV)\, hemorrhagic fever (Ebola virus)\,  AIDS (HIV) and new emerging pandemics (SARS\, MERS\, SARS-CoV-2). Understanding the host pathogen relationship at a molecular level provides rational approaches to therapy and vaccine development. In addition\, it also provides a better understanding of human biology and immunology. We are interested in how human viruses cause human cancer\, how HIV causes AIDS and why the immune system is not able to control viral infections. Our working hypothesis is that specific viral genes are the key determinants of viral pathogenesis and are responsible for disease progression. To evaluate the role of these genes in disease progression\, we have developed in vitro and in vivo models that recapitulate specific aspects of viral infection. Our emphasis has been placed on precision animal models where human specific pathogens can be studied and where novel therapeutic interventions can be evaluated. For example\, lymphotropic viruses are responsible for a vast number of human cancers. Unfortunately\, their study has been severely limited due to fact that the majority of these viruses do not infect other mammals. Thus the lack of animal models susceptible to infection by these human viruses has severely limited our ability to develop novel treatments and effective vaccines. Our laboratory has established novel animal models that recapitulate key aspect of infection by human-specific viruses such as CMV\, Zika\, RSV\, EBV\, HIV\, HHV-8\, dengue virus and more recently human and bat coronaviruses. We are currently using these systems to evaluate novel interventions to treat and/or prevent the devastating diseases caused by these agents.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Lawrence Earley Memorial Lecture topic is: “The Culture of Medicine.” \nCraig Brater MD\, Lawrence Earley\, MD\n  \nDr. Brater is a native of Oak Ridge\, Tenn. He attended undergraduate and medical school at Duke University\, completed his internship at Duke\, and his residency at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF)\, followed by a fellowship in clinical pharmacology. There he developed a research and clinical interest in diuretics that continues today. After a year as a junior faculty member at UCSF\, Dr. Brater spent nine years on the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. \nDr. Brater joined the faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1986\, where he began the Division of Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine. Four years later he was selected to chair the Department of Medicine\, the largest department in the School. In 2000\, Dr. Brater was selected to be the ninth dean of the IU School of Medicine.\nAs dean\, Dr. Brater supervised nine campuses across the State of Indiana. The school includes about 2\,000 full time faculty and more than 2\,200 physicians who serve as volunteer faculty throughout the State of Indiana. The School admits approximately 350 students per year and is the largest medical school in the US.\nDr. Brater also served as Vice President for University Clinical Affairs for IU. \nDr. Brater retired from IU in 2013 and since then serves as Vice President for Programs of the Walther Cancer Foundation and President of the Regenstrief Foundation. He also continues to serve (since 2008) as President of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine. The Alliance represents Internal Medicine Department Chairs\, residency Program Directors\, subspecialty Chiefs and Program Directors\, Clerkship Directors and Administrators having close to 10\,000 individual members. \nDr. Brater has published more than 130 research articles and 50 books or book chapters. These publications\, for the most part\, concern diuretics or the effects of non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on renal function. He has been awarded memberships in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He has been or is currently president of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics\, the Association of Professors of Medicine\, the Central Society for Clinical Research\, and the United States Pharmacopoeia. In 2000\, his alma mater awarded him the Duke Medical Alumni Award in recognition of his contributions to academic medicine. \nDr. Brater and his wife Stephanie have one daughter Aimee who lives in Seattle where she practices in Psychology focusing on individuals (particularly women) who have substance abuse issues. The Brater’s are actively involved in the IU School of Medicine program in Kenya. Through this program\, they met their “Kenyan sons” Michael and Marcel; Michael is a graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and of the IU School of Medicine Master’s in Public Health. He is currently working in the global health program for the University of North Carolina. He and his family are in Malawi as part of that program. Marcel received an MPH from Columbia and works part time with the UN in Nairobi with his full time job being running his own safari company.

DESCRIPTION:Chad Pecot\, MD\n  \nPersonal Statement \nI am a tenured Associate Professor and Director of Translational Research at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center\, and I specialize in solid tumor malignancies. As a prior cancer patient\, my passion is to uncover important findings in cancer biology and translate these to the clinic as rapidly as possible. Since August 2013 I have been an independent investigator at UNC-Chapel Hill. My research career thus far has quickly led to several high-impact discoveries as a result of innovative ideas and establishment of synergistic collaborative teams. I also have a passion for training the next generation of scientists at the doctorate\, post-doctorate\, and junior faculty levels. My research is characterized by an integration of therapeutic RNA interference\, sophisticated modeling of cancer metastasis and the tumor microenvironment\, and leveraging of bioinformatic and systems biology approaches to uncover key nodes in cancer networks. In 2019 I founded EnFuego Therapeutics based on a pipeline of ligand-delivered RNA-based technologies developed in my laboratory\, and our long-term goal is to translate these technologies to the clinic. Because metastatic spread accounts for the greatest proportion of cancer-related deaths\, most of my current work uses lung and triple-negative breast cancers as disease models with the hopes that our discoveries will also fundamentally impact treatment paradigms in other aggressive malignancies.

DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Temel\, MD\n  \nDr. Jennifer Temel is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Cancer Outcomes Research Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center.  She is a thoracic oncologist and serves as the Clinical Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program at MGH. She has received funding from the National Cancer Institute\, the National Institute of Nursing Research\, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute\, and the American Cancer Society to study novel methods of improving the care of patients with cancer and their family members.  She has developed a thriving research program focused on optimizing palliative and supportive care for patients with cancer and their families. Dr. Temel is also invested in training the next generation of clinical investigators and serves as the co-Principal Investigator on two National Cancer Institute grants to train and support junior faculty pursuing research careers. She is the recipient of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Award for Excellence in Scientific Research\, the American Cancer Society Pathfinder Award\, the American Psychosocial Oncology Society Award for Outstanding Education and Training\, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology Walther Cancer Foundation Palliative and Supportive Care in Oncology Award. Dr. Temel was recently named an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor for her research in palliative and supportive care.

DESCRIPTION:W. Kimryn Rathmell\, PhD\, MD\n  \nDr. Kimryn Rathmell is the Chair of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  She is a physician-scientist studying the molecular biology of renal cell carcinomas and rare tumors of the kidney. She earned her undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Biology at the University of Northern Iowa\, and her MD and PhD in Biophysics at Stanford University. She completed internal medicine training at the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania\, and fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Pennsylvania.  She joined the Departments of Medicine and Genetics at the University of North Carolina in 2003 and was a founding member of the Department of Urology before relocating to Vanderbilt in 2015. \nHer research program focuses on understanding the molecular pathogenesis of renal cell carcinomas and spans early models of renal tumorigenesis\, novel imaging strategies for diagnosis and screening of kidney cancer\, epigenetic regulation of kidney cancers\, metabolic features of tumorigenesis\, and novel therapeutic strategies to overcome resistance to anti-angiogenic therapy and checkpoint targeted immunotherapy. With these bench to bedside strategies\, her laboratory endeavors to integrate knowledge of pathways that promote cancer development with translational clinical studies\, and uses these discoveries to develop robust approaches to improve the survival of patients with kidney cancers. She is also deeply committed to the development of physician-scientists. At UNC Chapel Hill\, she worked closely with the Medical Scientist Training program\, founded the oncology junior faculty mentoring program\, and served the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center as Associate Director for Education and Training. At Vanderbilt\, she serves as the Deputy Director for Research Integration and Career Development for the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. She directs T32 and K12 career development programs\, in addition to continuing to serve as a faculty mentor for the Vanderbilt Medical Scientist Training Program. Outside of these activities\, she has led organizational initiatives through such work as service on the ASCO Ethics and Education Committees\, chaired the ASCO Nominating Committee\, founded and served as chair for the Department of Defense Kidney Cancer Research Program\, led numerous working groups of the NIH Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)\, served on several editorial boards\, most recently the Journal of Clinical Investigation\, Cancer Research\, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology-Precision Oncology\, and served on the ASCI Council as Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Society\, leading changes for young physician-scientists\, enhancing advocacy and development\, and during the founding of the second journal of the society\, JCI-Insight. Dr. Rathmell currently serves on the Board of Scientific Advisors for the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Commins maintains an active clinical practice and research program related to the alpha-gal mammalian meat allergy. \nDr. Commins received M.D. / Ph.D. (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology) from the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston\, SC). Following a residency in Internal Medicine\, Scott completed a fellowship in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at The University of Virginia (Charlottesville\, VA). Dr. Commins is a member of the American Academy of Allergy\, Asthma\, and Immunology and was a recent member of the Congressionally-appointed Tick-Borne Disease Working Group where he was co-chair of the alpha-gal syndrome subcommittee.

DESCRIPTION:Deepa Kirk\, MD\nDeepa Kirk\, MD\,  received her medical degree at the University of North Carolina\nSchool of Medicine and completed her residency\, chief residency\, and endocrine\nfellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. She joined the UNC Division of\nEndocrinology in 2008\, following two years of clinical practice in Virginia.\nDr. Kirk’s clinical practice focuses on patients with thyroid disease\, diabetes\, and\ngeneral endocrine disorders. She served as director of the UNC medical student\nendocrine block for seven years\, two of which it was selected as “Best Foundation\nPhase Block”. She has directed the medical student ambulatory endocrine rotation for\nover ten years.\nSince becoming medical director of the UNC Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic in 2014\, Dr.\nKirk has worked with Department and hospital leadership on several initiatives\nincluding: establishment of the EEP (direct EPIC support) program\, Care Team\nRedesign\, and pilot programs to support the Department’s March 2021 move to the\nEastowne Medical Office Building.\nDr. Kirk has also served as Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs for the Endocrine Division\nsince 2019. In this role\, she had the joy and immense privilege of recruiting several\noutstanding clinical faculty members and helping to develop the Division’s pituitary and\nthyroid tumor workflows. She works closely with Division\, Department\, and health care\nsystem leadership to improve patient access\, care coordination\, and care delivery.

DESCRIPTION:Amanda Nelson\, MD\nAmanda E. Nelson is a board-certified internist and rheumatologist with a Master of Clinical Research in Epidemiology. She spends one day per week in clinic\, divided between general rheumatology and musculoskeletal ultrasound\, and is very involved in fellow education. Her research is focused on a variety of aspects of imaging in osteoarthritis (OA)\, including the contribution of bone shape to OA risk\, novel methodologies for analysis of large and complex datasets\, ultrasound in OA\, and assessment of whole-body burden of OA. She directs the Phenotyping and Precision Medicine Resource Core of UNC’s Core Center for Clinical Research (CCCR). She is co-PI\, along with Dr. Yvonne Golightly\, of the Johnston County OA Project (JoCoOA)\, a community-based prospective cohort of OA\, multiple chronic conditions\, pain and disability in Black and White men and women that has been ongoing since 1991 and a new cohort\, the Johnston County Health Study\, building on that infrastructure. As an internationally recognized clinical OA expert\, she has worked with various groups to summarize the evidence related to OA management and clinical trials (ACR\, AF\, USBJI\, OARSI) and develop and promote dissemination of evidence-based guidelines\, and she serves as the Medical Advisor to the UNC-based OA Action Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Morgan S. Jones\, MD\n  \nMorgan Jones\, MD\,  received his medical degree at the University of Toledo School of Medicine and then went to the Medical University of South Carolina for his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology. In 2017 he came to the University of North Carolina as a clinical assistant professor. He focuses on inpatient endocrinology with a specific interest in quality improvement. Since coming to UNC he has developed a diabetes co-management service\, the Diabetes Care Team\, and a fracture liaison service with the help of multiple people in the Division of Endocrinology\, Department of Medicine and UNC Medical Center. These services have led to improved care for patients admitted to the UNC Medical Center with diabetes and osteoporosis. Morgan heads several inpatient quality improvement initiatives focused on continual improvement in diabetes care. His clinical interest is diverse with a focus on diabetes after transplant. Since 2018\, he has cared for the majority of patients who underwent islet cell transplant at UNC and developed a multi-disciplinary clinic for these patients to streamline care.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth McNally\, MD\, PhD\nElizabeth McNally is a physician and scientist who directs the Center for Genetic Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.  As the Elizabeth J. Ward Professor of Genetic Medicine\, Dr. McNally is a cardiologist with expertise in cardiovascular genetics.  Her work focuses on understanding genetic mechanisms underlying heritable cardiac disorders.  By developing a deeper understanding as to how these genetic mutations exert their effects\, she is using these genetic signals to drive the development of new therapies.  Dr. McNally has a special interest in neuromuscular genetic diseases like muscular dystrophy since often these disorders have accompanying cardiovascular complications.  Her translational accomplishments have been recognized through an award from the Burroughs Wellcome Foundation and as a recipient a Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.  She serves on the Board of Directors for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and is the current Chair for the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences of the American Heart Association.  She is a past president of American Society for Clinical Investigation and Vice President of the Association of American Physicians.   She is the founder of Ikaika Therapeutics.  She has mentored more than 80 trainees.

DESCRIPTION:Lisa Sanders\, MD\, FACP\nDr. Lisa Sanders is a clinician educator in the Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program. In addition to her work as a physician and teacher\, she writes the popular Diagnosis column for the New York Times Magazine and the Think Like a Doctor column featured in the New York Times blog\, The Well. Her column was the inspiration for the Fox program House MD (2004-2012) and she served as a consultant to the show. In 2010\, she published a book titled Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis. Last year she collaborated with the New York Times on an eight-hour documentary series on the process of diagnosis for Netflix. Her most recent book is a collection of her columns and is titled\, Diagnosis: Solving the Most Baffling Medical Mysteries. \nSanders’ path to medicine was anything but traditional. As an undergraduate at the College of William and Mary\, she majored in English\, wrote for The Flat Hat\, the college paper\, and served pints of ale at Chownings Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg. After graduation she took a job with ABC at Good Morning America. Less than 10 years later\, while working for CBS News\, she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story for coverage of Hurricane Hugo as it slammed into her hometown of Charleston\, S.C. But by then\, Sanders said\, she was ready to move on professionally and decided that of all the subjects she covered as a journalist\, medicine intrigued her most. After two years at Columbia University’s Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program\, Sanders was accepted to the Yale School of Medicine “as part of the 10 percent of the class they reserve for weirdos\,” she said. In addition to her time in the hospital\, Sanders is currently researching clinical decision making and the way diagnostic decisions and errors are made. She has also published two books on weight loss and food choice — The Perfect Fit Diet: Combine What Science Knows About Weight Loss With What You Know About Yourself in 2004 and The Perfect Fit Diet: How to Lose Weight\, Keep it Off and Still Eat the Foods You Love in 2005.

DESCRIPTION:Muneera R. Kapadia\, MD\, MME\nMuneera Kapadia\, MD\, MME is an Associate Professor and specializes in colorectal surgery. She attended medical school at the University of Michigan. She completed general surgery residency at Northwestern University and colorectal fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She practiced at the University of Iowa for nearly ten years and during that time she earned a master’s degree in medical education and served as the Associate Program Director for the Surgery Residency Program. In addition to her clinical and educational roles\, she has a special interest in patient-related communication skills. She has been involved with communication skills education at the student\, resident and faculty level and has taught both nationally and internationally. DESCRIPTION:Robert Wachter\, MD\nRobert M. Wachter\, MD is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California\, San Francisco. Wachter is author of 250 articles and 6 books. He coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996 and is often considered the “father” of the hospitalist field\, the fastest growing specialty in the history of modern medicine. He is past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine and past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine. In 2004\, he received the John M.
