SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Katie Reeder-Hayes and Louise Henderson\, "Mammography\, When to Start\, How Often\, When to Stop"
DESCRIPTION:Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States. Routine screening mammography is recommended by most groups issuing breast cancer screening guidelines. There are\, however\, important considerations for who should be screened\, when screening should start\, how often they should be screened\, and when screening should stop. Drs. Reeder-Hayes and Henderson will discuss current breast cancer screening guidelines\, the evaluation of benefits and risks of breast cancer screening in average risk women\, newer breast imaging technologies (i.e. tomosynthesis\,) and the role of mammographic breast density in screening. \n \nDr. Reeder-Hayes is an oncologist specializing in breast cancer with a research focus in comparative effectiveness of cancer treatments and cancer treatment disparities. Her research interests include the contribution of treatment variations and organizational characteristics to race and age disparities in cancer outcomes\, effectiveness of breast cancer treatment paradigms in elderly women\, and adherence to endocrine therapy in breast cancer survivors. Her training and experience includes analysis of large secondary databases\, cost-effectiveness analysis\, survey development and qualitative methods. \nDr. Louise Henderson is Associate Professor of Radiology and Director of the Carolina Mammography Registry. Her research interests focus on cancer screening and the application of linked cancer outcomes and Medicare/administrative data to assess patterns and outcomes of care. She is particularly interested in breast cancer screening and the performance of imaging technologies\, comparative effectiveness research\, and disparities in cancer screening and treatment. \nWatch the video

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Wesley Burks "Peanut Allergy: Why Are All These Families Going Nuts?"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Burks will address anxieties families have concerning peanut allergy\, how to respond to a reaction\, and will describe the current research and treatments. In his Chair’s Corner podcast with Dr. Falk\, Dr. Burks explains “You have to ingest the food to have serious life-threatening reaction—it’s not touching it\, it’s not smelling it\, it’s not sitting next to somebody in school or a ballgame…That’s not going to cause an allergic reaction—you have to eat the food. That’s the biggest thing for a family to understand.” \nDr. Wesley Burks is the Curnen Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UNC and the Executive Dean for the School of Medicine. Dr. Burks is a pediatric allergist and immunologist\, and is the Executive Director for the UNC Food Allergy Initiative. \nWatch the video

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Hyman Muss "Personalizing Care for the Older Cancer Patient"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Muss is a translational researcher who is involved in the design and of both clinical trials that contain collaborative trials involving both laboratory and health services research. His major interest is in cancer in older patients with a focus on the treatment of breast cancer in older women. Breast cancer is a disease of aging and the majority of women who die of breast cancer are 65 years and older. Older patients frequently receive poorer cancer treatment and Dr. Muss is interested in improving cancer care in such patients. He also has a major interest in biomarkers of aging and geriatric assessment in older patients with cancer. Dr. Muss and his colleagues at the Lineberger Cancer Center have developed a geriatric oncology program for the cancer center including a geriatric oncology consultation clinic.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Laurence E. Earley Lecture: Cornelia Dean "Doctors and Patients: Ignorance\, Irrationality and Risk"
DESCRIPTION:When ordinary people attempt to understand scientific\, medical or other technical information\, they may find themselves hampered by ignorance\, irrational patterns of thinking and erroneous ideas about risk. These problems are always unfortunate\, but when the information people are trying to understand relates to their own health\, they are particularly unfortunate.Clinicians can do a lot to reduce this kind of trouble\, Some useful steps are relatively simple\, others are more complicated. As the practice of medicine becomes more and more complex\, it is important for clinicians to embrace and adopt them. \nCornelia Dean is a lecturer at Brown University and a science writer and former science editor of The New York Times. In her editing tenure in the newspaper’s science department\, members of its staff won every major journalism prize as well as the Lasker Award for public service. \nThe Laurence E. Earley lecture honors Dr. Earley (1931-2012)\, an internationally known nephrologist who retired from UNC in 2000. \nWatch the video

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Bryan Roth\, "G-Coupled Protein Receptors"
DESCRIPTION:Bryan Roth is the Michael Hooker Distinguished Professor of Protein Therapeutics and Translational Proteomics in the Department of Pharmacology. He is a world-renowned scientist best known for creating an innovative scientific method that allows neuroscientists to manipulate and study brain circuits in health and disease. \nG-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent one of the most evolutionarily diverse superfamilies of the human genome. Roth’s lab studies all aspects of GPCR structure and function ranging from the atomic-level analysis of ligand-receptor interactions to in vivo studies. Currently they are focused on members of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) and opioid receptor families and their accessory proteins. \nRoth is also a Professor in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. He has published more than 400 articles in many prestigious journals\, including Science\, Nature\, Cell\, and The New England Journal of Medicine.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds Blythe Lecture\, Donald Wesson "The Evolving Spectrum of Acid Stress and Its Contribution to Chronic Kidney Disease"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will convey our expanding understanding of how the accumulation of body acid occurs and its detrimental effects on kidney function. Dr. Wesson will discuss how these findings are being translated into new\, possibly disease-modifying treatments for chronic kidney disease. \nDonald Wesson is President of the Baylor Scott & White Health and Wellness Center\, Senior Vice President of Baylor Scott & White Weight Management Services\, and Professor of Medicine at Texas A&M University College of Medicine. \nEvery one to three years\, the Division of Nephrology and Kidney Center invites a lecturer to honor the memory of Dr. William Blythe\, II. Dr. Blythe\, the first Division Chief for Nephrology and Hypertension at UNC\, was an outstanding physician-scientist and teacher who inspired many of us to pursue nephrology. DESCRIPTION:Felicia Cosman is Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Medical Director of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. \nDr. Cosman’s research includes studies on the causes of osteoporosis and how estrogen\, SERMs\, vitamin D\, bisphosphonates\, denosumab\, and anabolic therapies work as treatments for osteoporosis.
