SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds - Ethan Basch\, MD\, MSc\, "Patient-Reported Outcomes for Symptom and Adverse Event Monitoring in Oncology."
DESCRIPTION:Ethan Basch\, MD\, MSc \nDr. Ethan Basch is Physician-in-Chief of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital and Chief of Oncology at the University North Carolina\, where he is the Richard M. Goldberg Distinguished Professor in Medical Oncology and Professor of Health Policy & Management. He has devoted his career to bringing the patient voice into cancer care delivery and drug development processes. His research group established that up to half of patients’ symptomatic adverse events go undetected in clinical trials\, and that patient-reported outcome questionnaires substantially improve detection. His team determined that integrating web-based patient-reported symptoms into oncology clinical practice improves clinical outcomes\, including survival\, and reduces health service utilization. His group created a system for the National Cancer Institute to collect patient-reported AEs during cancer trials called the ‘PRO-CTCAE.’ Dr. Basch is involved in efforts to bring PROs into comparative effectiveness research\, routine care\, and quality improvement. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)\, an Associate Editor at JAMA\, and a prior member of the Board of Scientific Advisors for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Methodology Committee of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).

DESCRIPTION:David Scrase\, MD\nDavid R. Scrase\, MD was appointed as the Secretary Designate of the Human Services Department by Governor\, Michelle Lujan-Grisham\, soon after her election in November 2018. \nDr. Scrase is a Board Certified Internist and Geriatrician\, and at the time of his appointment was the Interim Division Chief for General Internal Medicine and the Chief of Geriatrics at UNM. His first love and understood calling is as a primary care physician\, and he has continuously cared for patients for over 30 years\, despite concurrent service in administrative roles. He continues to see patients while serving as Secretary of the Human Services Department. \nDr. Scrase has held a variety of administrative positions\, including nine years in medical education\, as well as numerous healthcare executive positions in Michigan and New Mexico. Since moving to New Mexico more than 20 years ago\, he has been active in many New Mexico public policy committees and community organizations\, including four years as Director and Treasurer of Equality New Mexico and as a member of the Board of Menaul School in Albuquerque. He served on Governor Richardson’s Insure New Mexico! Committee and Health Care for New Mexicans Committee\, on the national Ambulatory Quality Association setting quality metrics for professional practice\, and on the Executive Committee of the New Mexico Association of Commerce and Industry. He worked closely with the New Mexico Medicaid program for the three years prior to his appointment as Secretary\, working to enhance the treatment of Hepatitis C for Medicaid members and to improve quality and reduce hospital readmissions in all New Mexico nursing facilities.

DESCRIPTION:Muneera R. Kapadia\, MD\, MME\nMuneera Kapadia\, MD\, MME is an Associate Professor and specializes in colorectal surgery. She attended medical school at the University of Michigan. She completed general surgery residency at Northwestern University and colorectal fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She practiced at the University of Iowa for nearly ten years and during that time she earned a master’s degree in medical education and served as the Associate Program Director for the Surgery Residency Program. In addition to her clinical and educational roles\, she has a special interest in patient-related communication skills. She has been involved with communication skills education at the student\, resident and faculty level and has taught both nationally and internationally. DESCRIPTION:Lisa Sanders\, MD\, FACP\nDr. Lisa Sanders is a clinician educator in the Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program. In addition to her work as a physician and teacher\, she writes the popular Diagnosis column for the New York Times Magazine and the Think Like a Doctor column featured in the New York Times blog\, The Well. Her column was the inspiration for the Fox program House MD (2004-2012) and she served as a consultant to the show. In 2010\, she published a book titled Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis. Last year she collaborated with the New York Times on an eight-hour documentary series on the process of diagnosis for Netflix. Her most recent book is a collection of her columns and is titled\, Diagnosis: Solving the Most Baffling Medical Mysteries. \nSanders’ path to medicine was anything but traditional. As an undergraduate at the College of William and Mary\, she majored in English\, wrote for The Flat Hat\, the college paper\, and served pints of ale at Chownings Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg. After graduation she took a job with ABC at Good Morning America. Less than 10 years later\, while working for CBS News\, she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story for coverage of Hurricane Hugo as it slammed into her hometown of Charleston\, S.C. But by then\, Sanders said\, she was ready to move on professionally and decided that of all the subjects she covered as a journalist\, medicine intrigued her most. After two years at Columbia University’s Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program\, Sanders was accepted to the Yale School of Medicine “as part of the 10 percent of the class they reserve for weirdos\,” she said. In addition to her time in the hospital\, Sanders is currently researching clinical decision making and the way diagnostic decisions and errors are made. She has also published two books on weight loss and food choice — The Perfect Fit Diet: Combine What Science Knows About Weight Loss With What You Know About Yourself in 2004 and The Perfect Fit Diet: How to Lose Weight\, Keep it Off and Still Eat the Foods You Love in 2005.

SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds - Elizabeth McNally\, MD\, PhD\, Northwestern University\, "Genetics and Ancestry in Medicine: Lessons from CardioGenetics."
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth McNally\, MD\, PhD\nElizabeth McNally is a physician and scientist who directs the Center for Genetic Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.  As the Elizabeth J. Ward Professor of Genetic Medicine\, Dr. McNally is a cardiologist with expertise in cardiovascular genetics.  Her work focuses on understanding genetic mechanisms underlying heritable cardiac disorders.  By developing a deeper understanding as to how these genetic mutations exert their effects\, she is using these genetic signals to drive the development of new therapies.  Dr. McNally has a special interest in neuromuscular genetic diseases like muscular dystrophy since often these disorders have accompanying cardiovascular complications.  Her translational accomplishments have been recognized through an award from the Burroughs Wellcome Foundation and as a recipient a Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.  She serves on the Board of Directors for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and is the current Chair for the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences of the American Heart Association.  She is a past president of American Society for Clinical Investigation and Vice President of the Association of American Physicians.   She is the founder of Ikaika Therapeutics.  She has mentored more than 80 trainees.

DESCRIPTION:In this session\, researchers and community advocates will provide insights into a digital and print campaign developed to increase awareness about COVID-19 in Black and brown communities. Not A Host (NAH) is a grassroots effort designed to bridge the knowledge gaps around COVID-19 transmission and prevention and the systemic and structural influences that disproportionately impact minority communities. DESCRIPTION:Ross Boyce\, MD\, MSc\n  \nDr. Ross Boyce is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He is a native of North Carolina\, having graduated Magna Cum Laude from Davidson College with Honors in Chemistry. After graduation\, Dr. Boyce was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army\, eventually rising to the rank of Captain.  He completed two deployments to Iraq\, where he served in a variety leadership positions including Reconnaissance Platoon Leader\, Operations Officer\, and Civil-Military Officer.  For his service\, Dr. Boyce was awarded three Bronze Star Medals\, including one with a Valor Device for heroism in combat. \n  \nUpon leaving the military\, Dr. Boyce attended medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Between his third and fourth years of medical school\, Dr. Boyce completed a M.Sc. In Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine\, focusing his thesis on the control of Dengue vectors. Dr. Boyce completed his medical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital\, where together with his partners at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Epicentre Mbarara Research Base\, he has worked to establish an active malaria research program in the highlands of western Uganda. \n  \nDr. Boyce’s international research focuses on the spatial epidemiology of malaria and vector-borne diseases in East Africa\, particularly in rural\, underserved communities. He is the principal investigator on studies funded by the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, among others. At present\, his team is focused on novel methods to more efficiently identify mosquito breeding sites to facilitate targeted vector control interventions\, which if successful\, could make vector control a more cost-effective method for malaria control in high-transmission\, rural environments. \n  \nMore locally\, Dr. Boyce leads a multi-disciplinary research collaboration\, the Vector-Borne Disease Epidemiology\, Ecology\, and Response (VEER) Hub\, focused on issues of tick- and mosquito-borne diseases endemic to North Carolina. The collaboration includes investigators from diverse fields including clinical medicine\, epidemiology\, immunology\, entomology\, geography\, and veterinary science with partners at North Carolina State University\, the NC Division of Public Health\, and Fort Bragg\, among others.

Call 919-962-3000 or 866-441-3683\, or email conferencecenter@unc.edu. \n\nPerformance 3:00–4:00 p.m.\nQ&A 4:00 – 4:30 p.m.\n\nIn honor of Black History\, the Friday Center for Continuing Education proudly presents a theatrical performance presented by acclaimed actor and playwright\, Mike Wiley.  Crafted from the public record\, his one-man\, multiple character performance of Dar He offers a transfixing dramatization of the historic interviews and events surrounding the lynching and murder of 14-year old Emmett Till. \nIn 1955\, a 14-year old black Chicago youth travelled to the Mississippi Delta with country kinfolk and Southern cooking on his mind.  He walked off the train and into a world he could never understand.  It was a world of thick color lines\, of hard-held class systems and unspeakable taboos.  Young Emmett crossed that line and stepped into his gruesome fate by whistling at a white woman.  This riveting play chronicles the murder\, trial and unbelievable confession of the men accused of Till’s lynching.  His death was a spark that ignited the Civil Rights Movement in America. \nPortraying an entire cast of black\, white\, male and female characters\, Mike Wiley’s solo-performance reminds us that we are all one humanity.  It is a living monument and tribute to the change-making unsung heroes from the African-American experience. Dar He offers a powerful lesson of truth and the triumph of the human spirit.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds: Morgan S. Jones\, MD\, "Diabetes Improvement at UNC Medical Center: A Multi-Disciplinary Effort."
DESCRIPTION:Morgan S. Jones\, MD\n  \nMorgan Jones\, MD\,  received his medical degree at the University of Toledo School of Medicine and then went to the Medical University of South Carolina for his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology. In 2017 he came to the University of North Carolina as a clinical assistant professor. He focuses on inpatient endocrinology with a specific interest in quality improvement. Since coming to UNC he has developed a diabetes co-management service\, the Diabetes Care Team\, and a fracture liaison service with the help of multiple people in the Division of Endocrinology\, Department of Medicine and UNC Medical Center. These services have led to improved care for patients admitted to the UNC Medical Center with diabetes and osteoporosis. Morgan heads several inpatient quality improvement initiatives focused on continual improvement in diabetes care. His clinical interest is diverse with a focus on diabetes after transplant. Since 2018\, he has cared for the majority of patients who underwent islet cell transplant at UNC and developed a multi-disciplinary clinic for these patients to streamline care.

DESCRIPTION:About Book Club\nThe LGBTQ Center Book Club is a twice-monthly meeting of lit nerds and casual readers who love to discuss books\, fanfic\, and other readings with LGBTQIA+ themes. . We meet on a pattern of discussing things we love/late to read on the 1st Friday and meeting to discuss the group’s chosen works on the 3rd Friday. SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds: Amanda Nelson\, MD\, MSCR\, RhMSUS\, "Osteoarthritis: Updates and Tools."
DESCRIPTION:Amanda Nelson\, MD\nAmanda E. Nelson is a board-certified internist and rheumatologist with a Master of Clinical Research in Epidemiology. She spends one day per week in clinic\, divided between general rheumatology and musculoskeletal ultrasound\, and is very involved in fellow education. Her research is focused on a variety of aspects of imaging in osteoarthritis (OA)\, including the contribution of bone shape to OA risk\, novel methodologies for analysis of large and complex datasets\, ultrasound in OA\, and assessment of whole-body burden of OA. She directs the Phenotyping and Precision Medicine Resource Core of UNC’s Core Center for Clinical Research (CCCR). She is co-PI\, along with Dr. Yvonne Golightly\, of the Johnston County OA Project (JoCoOA)\, a community-based prospective cohort of OA\, multiple chronic conditions\, pain and disability in Black and White men and women that has been ongoing since 1991 and a new cohort\, the Johnston County Health Study\, building on that infrastructure. As an internationally recognized clinical OA expert\, she has worked with various groups to summarize the evidence related to OA management and clinical trials (ACR\, AF\, USBJI\, OARSI) and develop and promote dissemination of evidence-based guidelines\, and she serves as the Medical Advisor to the UNC-based OA Action Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Trans Talk Tuesday\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom – Contact Facilitator for Link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn LGBTIQ spaces do you feel like the T is left out?\nWould you like to connect with folks around topics of gender identity and gender expression?\nAre you questioning your gender identity and hoping to talk to other questioning folks?\nWould you like to share your knowledge and expertise in regards to navigating systems that don’t often recognize diversity within gender?\n\nJoin the LGBTQ Center’s peer support/discussion group for campus and community members that identify as transgender\, genderqueer\, or gender-questioning. This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. Instead\, please consider taking advantage of our educational programs and/or resources for supportive families or friends. \nAccommodations for Social Distancing\nTrans Talk Tuesday will be moving online for now. SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds: Deepa Kirk\, MD\, "Updates and Controversies in the Management of Thyroid Dysfunction."
DESCRIPTION:Deepa Kirk\, MD\nDeepa Kirk\, MD\,  received her medical degree at the University of North Carolina\nSchool of Medicine and completed her residency\, chief residency\, and endocrine\nfellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. She joined the UNC Division of\nEndocrinology in 2008\, following two years of clinical practice in Virginia.\nDr. Kirk’s clinical practice focuses on patients with thyroid disease\, diabetes\, and\ngeneral endocrine disorders. She served as director of the UNC medical student\nendocrine block for seven years\, two of which it was selected as “Best Foundation\nPhase Block”. She has directed the medical student ambulatory endocrine rotation for\nover ten years.\nSince becoming medical director of the UNC Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic in 2014\, Dr.\nKirk has worked with Department and hospital leadership on several initiatives\nincluding: establishment of the EEP (direct EPIC support) program\, Care Team\nRedesign\, and pilot programs to support the Department’s March 2021 move to the\nEastowne Medical Office Building.\nDr. Kirk has also served as Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs for the Endocrine Division\nsince 2019. In this role\, she had the joy and immense privilege of recruiting several\noutstanding clinical faculty members and helping to develop the Division’s pituitary and\nthyroid tumor workflows. She works closely with Division\, Department\, and health care\nsystem leadership to improve patient access\, care coordination\, and care delivery.
