DESCRIPTION:About Book Club\nThe LGBTQ Center Book Club is a twice-monthly meeting of lit nerds and casual readers who love to discuss books\, fanfic\, and other readings with LGBTQIA+ themes. . We meet on a pattern of discussing things we love/late to read on the 1st Friday and meeting to discuss the group’s chosen works on the 3rd Friday. DESCRIPTION:Trans Talk Tuesday\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom – Contact Facilitator for Link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn LGBTIQ spaces do you feel like the T is left out?\nWould you like to connect with folks around topics of gender identity and gender expression?\nAre you questioning your gender identity and hoping to talk to other questioning folks?\nWould you like to share your knowledge and expertise in regards to navigating systems that don’t often recognize diversity within gender?\n\nJoin the LGBTQ Center’s peer support/discussion group for campus and community members that identify as transgender\, genderqueer\, or gender-questioning. This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. Instead\, please consider taking advantage of our educational programs and/or resources for supportive families or friends. \nAccommodations for Social Distancing\nTrans Talk Tuesday will be moving online for now. SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds Presents: The Lawrence Earley Annual Memorial Lecture. Featured speaker: Craig Brater\, MD\, President of AAIM
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Lawrence Earley Memorial Lecture topic is: “The Culture of Medicine.” \nCraig Brater MD\, Lawrence Earley\, MD\n  \nDr. Brater is a native of Oak Ridge\, Tenn. He attended undergraduate and medical school at Duke University\, completed his internship at Duke\, and his residency at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF)\, followed by a fellowship in clinical pharmacology. There he developed a research and clinical interest in diuretics that continues today. After a year as a junior faculty member at UCSF\, Dr. Brater spent nine years on the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. \nDr. Brater joined the faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1986\, where he began the Division of Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine. Four years later he was selected to chair the Department of Medicine\, the largest department in the School. In 2000\, Dr. Brater was selected to be the ninth dean of the IU School of Medicine.\nAs dean\, Dr. Brater supervised nine campuses across the State of Indiana. The school includes about 2\,000 full time faculty and more than 2\,200 physicians who serve as volunteer faculty throughout the State of Indiana. The School admits approximately 350 students per year and is the largest medical school in the US.\nDr. Brater also served as Vice President for University Clinical Affairs for IU. \nDr. Brater retired from IU in 2013 and since then serves as Vice President for Programs of the Walther Cancer Foundation and President of the Regenstrief Foundation. He also continues to serve (since 2008) as President of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine. The Alliance represents Internal Medicine Department Chairs\, residency Program Directors\, subspecialty Chiefs and Program Directors\, Clerkship Directors and Administrators having close to 10\,000 individual members. \nDr. Brater has published more than 130 research articles and 50 books or book chapters. These publications\, for the most part\, concern diuretics or the effects of non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on renal function. He has been awarded memberships in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He has been or is currently president of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics\, the Association of Professors of Medicine\, the Central Society for Clinical Research\, and the United States Pharmacopoeia. In 2000\, his alma mater awarded him the Duke Medical Alumni Award in recognition of his contributions to academic medicine. \nDr. Brater and his wife Stephanie have one daughter Aimee who lives in Seattle where she practices in Psychology focusing on individuals (particularly women) who have substance abuse issues. The Brater’s are actively involved in the IU School of Medicine program in Kenya. Through this program\, they met their “Kenyan sons” Michael and Marcel; Michael is a graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and of the IU School of Medicine Master’s in Public Health. He is currently working in the global health program for the University of North Carolina. He and his family are in Malawi as part of that program. Marcel received an MPH from Columbia and works part time with the UN in Nairobi with his full time job being running his own safari company.
