DESCRIPTION:Trans Talk Tuesday\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom – Contact Facilitator for Link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn LGBTIQ spaces do you feel like the T is left out?\nWould you like to connect with folks around topics of gender identity and gender expression?\nAre you questioning your gender identity and hoping to talk to other questioning folks?\nWould you like to share your knowledge and expertise in regards to navigating systems that don’t often recognize diversity within gender?\n\nJoin the LGBTQ Center’s peer support/discussion group for campus and community members that identify as transgender\, genderqueer\, or gender-questioning. This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. Instead\, please consider taking advantage of our educational programs and/or resources for supportive families or friends. \nAccommodations for Social Distancing\nTrans Talk Tuesday will be moving online for now. SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds\, Victor Garcia-Martinez\, PhD - "The COVID-19 Pandemic: A View From the Bench."
DESCRIPTION:Victor Garcia-Martinez\, PhD\n  \nDr. Garcia uses humanized mouse models\, including recently developed humanized-lung mice\, to study the pathogenesis of human-specific viruses and therapeutic interventions. Dr. Garcia is using these models to study an array of human respiratory pathogens including RSV\, CMV\, influenza\, MERS\, SARS\, SARS-CoV-2 and tuberculosis.  He has trained over 13 PhD students 40 postdoctoral fellows (past and present). His trainees hold positions in industry\, government and academic institutions. Dr. Garcia is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and his contribution to Inclusion and Diversity is recognized by the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Society for Cell Biology. Dr. Garcia is also the Director of the International Center for the Advancement of Translational Science. \nThroughout evolution\, humans have been challenged by viral pathogens new to the species. For the most part\, our immune system mounts an adequate response that protects us from the fatal consequences of infection. However\, in some instances viruses can circumvent the immune system and cause fatal diseases such as cancer (EBV\, KSHV\, HCV)\, hemorrhagic fever (Ebola virus)\,  AIDS (HIV) and new emerging pandemics (SARS\, MERS\, SARS-CoV-2). Understanding the host pathogen relationship at a molecular level provides rational approaches to therapy and vaccine development. In addition\, it also provides a better understanding of human biology and immunology. We are interested in how human viruses cause human cancer\, how HIV causes AIDS and why the immune system is not able to control viral infections. Our working hypothesis is that specific viral genes are the key determinants of viral pathogenesis and are responsible for disease progression. To evaluate the role of these genes in disease progression\, we have developed in vitro and in vivo models that recapitulate specific aspects of viral infection. Our emphasis has been placed on precision animal models where human specific pathogens can be studied and where novel therapeutic interventions can be evaluated. For example\, lymphotropic viruses are responsible for a vast number of human cancers. Unfortunately\, their study has been severely limited due to fact that the majority of these viruses do not infect other mammals. Thus the lack of animal models susceptible to infection by these human viruses has severely limited our ability to develop novel treatments and effective vaccines. Our laboratory has established novel animal models that recapitulate key aspect of infection by human-specific viruses such as CMV\, Zika\, RSV\, EBV\, HIV\, HHV-8\, dengue virus and more recently human and bat coronaviruses. We are currently using these systems to evaluate novel interventions to treat and/or prevent the devastating diseases caused by these agents.

DESCRIPTION:Sriram Machineni\, MD\n  \nDr. Machineni is board-certified in Obesity Medicine and Internal Medicine and completed a clinical and research fellowship in Obesity Medicine at the Massachusetts General hospital\, Harvard Medical School. \nHe moved to UNC in 2017 to establish medical obesity treatment services and\, helped build an integrated network of comprehensive obesity care at UNC Health and serves as the director of the Medical Weight Program at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. \nDr. Machineni is the principal investigator on multiple pharmaceutical clinical trials for obesity at UNC and is an expert in the use of anti-obesity pharmacotherapy in patients with complex medical disease. \nHe is engaged in educating providers and has a goal of integrating obesity medicine education into medical school\, residency\, and fellowship programs.
