He has more than 25 years of experience in working with leaders in secondary and higher education\, and is especially skilled at developing and implementing diversity\, mentoring and leadership initiatives. Dr. Thomas has served as an executive DEI leader at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine\, the University of Kansas\, and at the University of South Florida Polytechnic. He is recognized for his Thomas Principles\, a mentoring model designed to increase college student progression and graduation rates. DESCRIPTION:Anil Kishin Gehi\, MD \n  \nDr. Anil Gehi is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the faculty at UNC in 2008\, Dr. Gehi completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in electrical engineering at MIT\, his MD and internal medicine residency at University of California San Francisco\, cardiovascular disease fellowship at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center\, and cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at Emory Medical Center. Dr. Gehi is the Director of Clinical Electrophysiology and Program Director of the Fellowship in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at UNC. His research interests have focused on improving the quality and system of care for patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF)\, the most common arrhythmia affecting adults. Work through this effort is underway to build a collaborative model of care throughout the UNC Healthcare System. Adjunctive efforts as part of this undertaking include develop digital tools for patient engagement and using a tele-mentoring model to train physicians in the community on best practice recommendations. Additional research endeavors have focused on the field of hybrid AF ablation and complex mapping of ablation targets.

SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds - Matthew Cavender\, MD\, & Amy Mottl\, MD\,  - "SGLT2i as Cardiorenal Protection"
DESCRIPTION:  \nDr. Cavender is an active interventional cardiologist with a focus on catheter based interventions for coronary artery disease\, aortic and mitral valve disease\, peripheral vascular disease\, and cardiogenic shock. In addition to his clinical interests\, he has an active research program with an emphasis on improving the quality of health care delivery and understanding the clinical effectiveness of pharmacological and device based therapies for patients with coronary artery disease\, diabetes\, peripheral arterial disease\, and valvular heart disease. \n  \nDr. Mottl’s research has involved investigation of genetic and epidemiologic risk factors of chronic kidney disease\, with an emphasis on diabetic kidney disease. She is especially interested in pathogenic mechanisms of diabetic nephropathy and how these may vary between those with and without proteinuria. She is being funded through 2017\, by a career development award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to study whether there are different pathologic and clinical manifestations of diabetes on the kidney and how these relate to diabetic complications of the eye. Dr. Mottl is a renal consultant to the multicenter\, NIH and CDC funded study: ‘SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth’ which is an epidemiologic cohort of children with type 1 or 2 diabetes. One of the fundamental aims of this study is to track the incidence\, risk factors and natural history of microvascular complications of diabetes diagnosed during childhood. Dr. Mottl’s long-term goal is to elucidate pathogenic mechanisms in diabetic microvascular complications for the purpose of targeting novel therapies.

DESCRIPTION:Introduction by Dr. Tom Keyserling \n45 minute presentation by Dr. Tim Harlan (George Washington University) \n15 minute Q&A with Dr. Alice Ammerman \n  \nTimothy S. Harlan\, MD\, FACP\, CCMS\n  \nTimothy S. Harlan practices internal medicine in New Orleans.  His love of food began as a teenager working in the restaurant business.  Starting as a dishwasher\, he worked his way up to managing his first restaurant by the age of eighteen and owning his first restaurant at twenty-two. After operating Le Petit Café as a chef/owner he closed the restaurant to return to school.  Dr. Harlan originally intended to pursue a degree in hotel and restaurant management but events led him toward medicine and the decision to become a physician. \nAfter finishing an undergraduate degree in Anthropology Dr. Harlan went on to study medicine at Emory University.  Working as a caterer throughout school\, he continued to be involved with food and cooking but noticed a lack of knowledge in the medical field around food\, eating healthy and eating well.  Neither patients nor health care providers understood much about a healthy diet.  Patients\, it seemed\, were usually told not what they could eat but\, rather\, what they could not eat. \n  \nIn medical school\, Dr. Harlan wrote It’s Heartly Fare a food manual for patients with cardiovascular disease.  Since then he has published numerous books focusing on translating evidence based diet and nutrition information for the lay public.  He is publisher of the popular Web site DrGourmet.com where information from the Mediterranean diet literature is translated in a practical way for the American kitchen. \n  \nHe served as Associate Dean for Clinical Services at Tulane University School of Medicine is the Executive Director of the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine\, the first of its kind teaching kitchen operated by a medical school.  The center offers an innovative program teaching medical students about diet and lifestyle that bridges the gap between the basic sciences\, clinical medicine\, the community and culinary education.  Medical students work side-by-side in the kitchen with culinary students to teach each other and\, most importantly\, teach the community and patients how to return to their kitchens and transform their health.

Sivak\, MD is an assistant professor of medicine in the division of cardiology. He completed his cardiology fellowship at Duke in 2016\, including a year of advanced imaging training. His specialty focus is in valvular heart disease and cardiac imaging.

He completed an internship/residency in internal medicine and a hematology-oncology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center\, North Carolina\, and a one-year clinical coagulation fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill. Moll is professor of medicine in the division of hematology-oncology has been a faculty member since 1999. His clinical interest is coagulation and classical hematology\, with a particular focus on thrombosis and anticoagulation. His research interests include clinical trials on new anticoagulants and better use of established anticoagulants. DESCRIPTION:M. Eric Gershwin MD\, MACR\, MACP\nDr. Gershwin graduated from Stanford Medical School and interned at Tufts-New England Medical Center.  He trained in immunology at the National Institutes of Health and joined the faculty of the University of California at Davis in 1975.  Currently\, he is the Jack and Donald Chia Professor of Medicine and Distinguished Professor of Medicine at UC Davis.  Dr. Gershwin has authored over 900 experimental papers and more than 20 books.  Dr. Gershwin was the first scientist to clone the gene that produces the autoantigen involved in the anti-mitochondrial antibody test for patients with primary biliary cholangitis.  He is an expert on the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune disease and has been continuously funded by NIH for nearly 50 years.  Dr. Gershwin is also a consultant for multiple federal agencies and has worked with NIH\, FTC\, FDA\, USAID\, and also USDA.

DESCRIPTION:Leigh Anne Daniels\, MD\, MPH\nLeigh Anne Daniels has an interest in the diagnosis and management of patients with all causes of bronchiectasis\, including cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Extending from her clinical experience with these patients\, her research focuses on discovering the genetic variations that contribute to the development of idiopathic bronchiectasis (or bronchiectasis without a known cause). These patients have a characteristic body type; individuals often have scoliosis and/or sternal abnormalities\, mitral valve prolapse\, and are very flexible. They are frequently infected with non-tuberculous mycobacterium\, and many have family members with bronchiectasis. She is part of the research endeavors of the Genetic Disorders of Mucociliary Clearance Consortium and the Bronchiectasis Research Registry \n  \nRobert Tarran\, PhD\n  \nProf. Tarran received his BSc (hons) from The University of Leeds and his PhD in Physiology from Newcastle University\, UK.  He completed post-doctoral research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of California at Berkley. Prof. Tarran is currently a professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at UNC-Chapel Hill\, and holds membership in UNC’s Lineberger Cancer Center and Marsico Lung Institute.  Prof. Tarran’s research interests have centered on the role of ion channels in chronic lung diseases.  Over the last 5 years\, he has been studying the effects of e-cigarettes on the lung and has published some of the first studies on vaping in human lungs.

DESCRIPTION:Thomas Hostetter\, MD\nDr. Hostetter is Professor of Medicine at UNC. He was previously Professor of Medicine and Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University\, School of Medicine. He has also served as the Abraham Levitt Professor of Medicine and Director of the Nephrology Division at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York for 6 years. For nearly 5 years before that he was a Senior Scientific Advisor and founding Director of the National Kidney Disease Education Program at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Prior to that he had been Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota\, where he was also Director of the Renal Division in the Department of Medicine for 15 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Yale University.  After graduating from Baylor College of Medicine\, Dr. Hostetter served his internship at Baylor and the remainder of his residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. Following his nephrology fellowship at the Brigham\, he was a member of the faculty of Harvard Medical School until moving to Minnesota in 1982. Dr. Hostetter’s major research interests are the mechanisms of progressive renal disease and uremia. He was president of the American Society of Nephrology from 1999 to 2000 and was later chair of its Public Policy Board for 5 years. He is a deputy Editor of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and has served on several editorial boards\, study sections of the NIH\, the Nephrology board of the American Board of Internal Medicine\, the councils of the American and International Societies of Nephrology and as a consultant to industry.

Dr. Blumenthal graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Economics (2002). She studied medicine at Yale University School of Medicine\, which she completed in 2009\, before training at the Massachusetts General Hospital for Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology.

Other research interests include new and emerging infectious diseases (Pfiesteria\, CJD\, Norwalk agent\, Candida auris\, CRE)\, infections in child care centers\, tuberculosis\, and bioterrorist agents. \nThrough his roles as medical director of hospital epidemiology and associate chief medical officer of UNC Health Care\, Dr. Weber works to prevent hospital-acquired infections in patients and staff at UNC Hospitals.  He is the Chair of UNC Hospitals’ Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee. SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Richard Loeser\, MD - "Osteoarthritis: Are We Any Closer to Disease Modification?"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard F. Loeser is the Herman and Louise Smith Distinguished Professor in the Division of Rheumatology\, Allergy and Immunology and the Director of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Dr. Loeser received his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine\, Rheumatology\, and Geriatrics at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Dr. Loeser’s lab uses a combination of in vitro experiments using human joint tissue cells and in vivo experiments in rodent models to study cell signaling pathways that regulate anabolic and catabolic activity responsible for joint tissue remodeling and destruction. The lab is particularly interested in determining how reactive oxygen species regulate chondrocyte signaling and how oxidative stress that occurs with aging and joint injury can alter the activity of these signaling pathways. Most recently he has also been examining the contribution of the gut microbiota to the development of osteoarthritis in humans and mouse models. He has worked in the area of clinical trials of exercise and weight loss interventions for adults with osteoarthritis of the knee including studies of biomarkers analysis samples from these studies. Dr. Loeser has published over 160 research articles\, reviews\, chapters and editorials on osteoarthritis and serves as co-editor of the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology. He has received the Osteoarthritis Research Society International Award for Basic Research in Osteoarthritis and a MERIT award from the NIH for his research project “Integrin Function in Cartilage”.

DESCRIPTION:Calum MacRae\, MD\, PhD\nCalum MacRae\, MD\, PhD\, is the Vice Chair for Scientific Innovation in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston\, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School\, a Principal Faculty Member at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute\, and an Associate Member at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. MacRae works on the human genetics of cardiac and vascular disease\, cardiovascular developmental biology\, and drug discovery. He has a longstanding interest in the incorporation of genomics and other large-scale datasets into clinical practice\, systematic approaches to the discovery of new translatable phenotypes\, and the role of disruptive innovation in refashioning the translational interface. His major clinical focus is the Cardiovascular Clinical Genetics Center\, he co-directs the Genomic Medicine Program and he also has established a Next Gen Phenotyping Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
