SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds Presents: Raj Panjabi\, MD\, Presenting the "Alan Jacobs Humanism in Medicine Memorial Lecture."
DESCRIPTION:Please note this lecture will take place on Wednesday\, October 7.  \nRaj Panjabi\, MD\, and Alan Jacobs\nRaj Panjabi\, MD\, is CEO of Last Mile Health and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the division of global health equity at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Panjabi grew up in Liberia and fled Liberia’s civil war with his family when he was nine years old\, becoming a refugee in the United States of America. He returned to Liberia as a medical student and then in 2007 co-founded Last Mile Health\, a non-profit organization working to save lives in the world’s most remote communities. \nThe Alan Jacobs Memorial Lecture\nAlan Jacobs passed away in February 2016 from complications of cardiac amyloidosis. Prior to his diagnosis\, Alan led a successful career in film spanning over 40 years. Beginning in the 1960s\, he produced documentary films supporting the civil rights and feminist movements and critiquing the Vietnam War. Alan held executive positions at the Trans-Lux Corporation and Hallmark Entertainment Company\, where he produced films for television; and board positions at both Sundance Film Festival\, of which he was a founding member\, and The American Film Institute. In his later years\, Alan taught cinematic history and film production at California State University\, Long Beach. As impactful as his professional accomplishments was Alan’s character. Those fortunate to know him enjoyed his intellect\, warmth\, and humor. \nAlan spent his last years in North Carolina and was a patient at UNC Hospitals. Throughout his illness Alan maintained an interest in the science of his condition and a firm belief in the importance of humanism in patient care\, including end-of-life care. One of Alan’s final wishes was to establish a lectureship at the UNC School of Medicine to support the kind of compassionate care that he was so fortunate to receive. \nThe Department of Medicine is grateful for the generous donation by Alan’s family to establish the Alan Jacobs Memorial Lecture.  Alan’s wife\, Lynn Goodpasture\, and their daughter\, Keelia Jacobs\, wish to acknowledge and express their gratitude to Dr. Lee Berkowitz for his outstanding care of Alan. \nrev 9.27 \n  \n

Her research interests include novel treatment strategies in lymphoma\, particularly immunotherapy\, and she is currently involved in the clinical trials of chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy for patients with lymphoma. She is interested in innovative approaches to CAR-T therapy\, improving the efficacy of CAR-T cells\, and management and prevention of the unique toxicities associated with this therapy. Her ultimate goal is to improve therapeutic options for lymphoma patients\, while minimizing toxicities and maintaining their quality of life.

Wachter is author of 250 articles and 6 books. He coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996 and is often considered the “father” of the hospitalist field\, the fastest growing specialty in the history of modern medicine. He is past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine and past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine. In 2004\, he received the John M. Eisenberg Award\, the nation’s top honor in patient safety. Thirteen times\, Modern Healthcare magazine has ranked him as one of the 50 most influential physician-executives in the U.S.; he was #1 on the list in 2015. His 2015 book\, The Digital Doctor: Hope\, Hype and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age\, was a New York Times science bestseller. As a world-class medical lecturer and collaborator towards improving cardiovascular health\, Dr. Simpson is regularly invited to present his clinical work and research studies at medical conferences across the globe. \nDr. Simpson’s research interests include an emphasis on population and individual-focused intervention to prevent heart attacks\, sudden death\, and strokes. DESCRIPTION:Darren DeWalt\, MD\, MPH\n  \nDr. DeWalt is an expert in primary care and innovative models of care delivery and financing. His research spans new models of care\, health disparities\, health literacy\, quality improvement\, and patient reported outcomes. From 2014-2016\, Dr. DeWalt led a group at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to help support new models of care delivery and financing. \nDr. DeWalt has a long history of research and quality improvement at local\, regional\, and national levels. Dr. DeWalt was the principal investigator for the North Carolina Infrastructure for Maintaining Primary Care Transformation (NC IMPaCT) grant from AHRQ. He also led the design team and was a national improvement advisor for the Improving Performance in Practice (IPIP) program for the boards and specialty societies of internal medicine\, family medicine\, and pediatrics. IPIP helped practicing primary care physicians improve care systems through working in improvement networks\, measuring and sharing performance data\, and receiving improvement education and training. As part of IPIP\, he also provided technical assistance to the RWJF Aligning Forces for Quality program transforming healthcare in 17 communities across the United States. Dr. DeWalt was also an improvement advisor to the Cincinnati Beacon Community PCMH and diabetes quality improvement collaborative. He currently leads the evidence team for Heart Health Now supporting transformation in 250 practices across North Carolina. \nHe has also researched self-management interventions for patients with low-literacy and focused on chronic diseases like diabetes\, heart failure\, COPD\, and asthma. His focus was on patient- physician communication and health system design to achieve better outcomes for vulnerable populations. His work in health literacy includes epidemiological studies\, systematic reviews\, communication tool development\, and clinical trials. He also led a practice-based intervention to reduce hypertension disparities funded by NHLBI. He is the lead author of the AHRQ Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkit. \nDr. DeWalt was the principal investigator at the UNC research site for the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS). PROMIS develops advanced tools for measurement of symptoms\, function\, and quality of life. Dr. DeWalt is interested in the use of self-report measurements among vulnerable populations\, particularly those with low literacy.

DESCRIPTION:Michael Pignone\, MD\, MPH\, MACP\n  \nMichael Pignone\, M.D.\, MPH\, MACP is the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine\, interim chair of the Department of Population Health\, assistant dean for Veterans Affairs\, director of the program on Cancer Prevention and Control at Dell Med’s Livestrong Cancer Institutes\, and professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine\, Oncology and Population Health. \nIn his prior appointment\, Pignone was a professor of medicine\, chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and director of the Institute for Healthcare Quality Improvement at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his medical degree in 1993 and completed residency training in primary care internal medicine in 1996 at the University of California\, San Francisco. He then completed fellowship training in 1996-98 through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program\, including a master’s degree in epidemiology from the UNC School of Public Health. \nPignone’s research is focused on chronic disease screening\, prevention and treatment\, and on improving medical decision making. His main areas of interest include heart disease prevention\, colorectal cancer screening\, and management of common chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart failure. He has developed and tested interventions\, including decision aids\, to mitigate literacy-related health disparities and to improve the use of appropriate preventive services. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed journal articles. \nIn 2013\, he was appointed as a member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. He has served on a number of national guideline and quality improvement panels\, including work for the American Diabetes Association\, the American Heart Association and the National Committee on Quality Assurance in Healthcare. In addition\, he has served as an associate editor for Medical Decision Making\, a medical editor for the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation and as an editorial board member for JAMA Internal Medicine. Pignone is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine and the Society for Medical Decision Making\, and he is a master of the American College of Physicians.

SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds: Nicholas Shaheen\, MD\, MPH\, "Preventing Esophageal Cancer."
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Shaheen\, MD\, MPH\n  \nNicholas J. Shaheen\, MD\, MPH is the Bozymski-Heizer Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine\, and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UNC. \nDr. Shaheen’s research interests center on gastroesophageal reflux disease\, and pre-cancerous and cancerous conditions of the esophagus.  He has a clinical and research interest in early detection and treatment of cancerous and precancerous lesions of the esophagus\, including endoscopic treatment of Barrett’s esophagus.  He has authored greater than 300 publications in these areas. He is primary or secondary author on guidelines statements on Barrett’s esophagus\, GERD\, eosinophilic esophagitis and the use of endoscopy. He has served as senior associate editor for the American Journal of Gastroenterology\, and on multiple other editorial boards. \nDr. Shaheen is currently principal investigator on multiple NIH grants investigating aspects of esophagus disease.  He is also the co-PI of UNC’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA)\, and co-director of the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute. \nDr. Shaheen is committed to mentoring and has served as a mentor for many clinical and translational  researchers\, including GI fellows\, medical students\, and postdoctoral fellows.  He completed a K24 Mid-Career Award from NIDDK to mentor clinical researchers.  He received the AGA’s Outstanding Mentor Award for the EGD section in 2018. \nDr. Shaheen currently serves as the Director of the ACG Institute for Clinical Research and Education.  During his tenure\, the Institute developed 4 new grants programs\, the Young Physicians’ Leadership Scholars Program\, the Edgar Achkar Visiting Professorship Program\, and multiple ‘Schools” in subject areas like Inflammatory Bowel Disease\, Functional Bowel syndromes and Hepatology\, among other initiatives.  He encourages his colleagues to make an investment in the future of our profession by donating to the G.U.T. fund\, which provides resources to support and expand the Institute’s work.

DESCRIPTION:Trans Talk Tuesday\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom – Contact Facilitator for Link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn LGBTIQ spaces do you feel like the T is left out?\nWould you like to connect with folks around topics of gender identity and gender expression?\nAre you questioning your gender identity and hoping to talk to other questioning folks?\nWould you like to share your knowledge and expertise in regards to navigating systems that don’t often recognize diversity within gender?\n\nJoin the LGBTQ Center’s peer support/discussion group for campus and community members that identify as transgender\, genderqueer\, or gender-questioning. This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. Instead\, please consider taking advantage of our educational programs and/or resources for supportive families or friends. \nAccommodations for Social Distancing\nTrans Talk Tuesday will be moving online for now. SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds - Ethan Basch\, MD\, MSc\, "Patient-Reported Outcomes for Symptom and Adverse Event Monitoring in Oncology."
DESCRIPTION:Ethan Basch\, MD\, MSc \nDr. Ethan Basch is Physician-in-Chief of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital and Chief of Oncology at the University North Carolina\, where he is the Richard M. Goldberg Distinguished Professor in Medical Oncology and Professor of Health Policy & Management. He has devoted his career to bringing the patient voice into cancer care delivery and drug development processes. His research group established that up to half of patients’ symptomatic adverse events go undetected in clinical trials\, and that patient-reported outcome questionnaires substantially improve detection. His team determined that integrating web-based patient-reported symptoms into oncology clinical practice improves clinical outcomes\, including survival\, and reduces health service utilization. His group created a system for the National Cancer Institute to collect patient-reported AEs during cancer trials called the ‘PRO-CTCAE.’ Dr. Basch is involved in efforts to bring PROs into comparative effectiveness research\, routine care\, and quality improvement. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)\, an Associate Editor at JAMA\, and a prior member of the Board of Scientific Advisors for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Methodology Committee of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).

SUMMARY:Virtual Medicine Grand Rounds - David Scrase\, MD\, "Using Data to Direct Public Policy for COVID in NM.”
DESCRIPTION:David Scrase\, MD\nDavid R. Scrase\, MD was appointed as the Secretary Designate of the Human Services Department by Governor\, Michelle Lujan-Grisham\, soon after her election in November 2018. \nDr. Scrase is a Board Certified Internist and Geriatrician\, and at the time of his appointment was the Interim Division Chief for General Internal Medicine and the Chief of Geriatrics at UNM. His first love and understood calling is as a primary care physician\, and he has continuously cared for patients for over 30 years\, despite concurrent service in administrative roles. He continues to see patients while serving as Secretary of the Human Services Department. \nDr. Scrase has held a variety of administrative positions\, including nine years in medical education\, as well as numerous healthcare executive positions in Michigan and New Mexico. Since moving to New Mexico more than 20 years ago\, he has been active in many New Mexico public policy committees and community organizations\, including four years as Director and Treasurer of Equality New Mexico and as a member of the Board of Menaul School in Albuquerque. He served on Governor Richardson’s Insure New Mexico! Committee and Health Care for New Mexicans Committee\, on the national Ambulatory Quality Association setting quality metrics for professional practice\, and on the Executive Committee of the New Mexico Association of Commerce and Industry. He worked closely with the New Mexico Medicaid program for the three years prior to his appointment as Secretary\, working to enhance the treatment of Hepatitis C for Medicaid members and to improve quality and reduce hospital readmissions in all New Mexico nursing facilities.
