DESCRIPTION:About Book Club\nThe LGBTQ Center Book Club is a twice-monthly meeting of lit nerds and casual readers who love to discuss books\, fanfic\, and other readings with LGBTQIA+ themes. . We meet on a pattern of discussing things we love/late to read on the 1st Friday and meeting to discuss the group’s chosen works on the 3rd Friday. DESCRIPTION:Trans Talk Tuesday\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom – Contact Facilitator for Link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn LGBTIQ spaces do you feel like the T is left out?\nWould you like to connect with folks around topics of gender identity and gender expression?\nAre you questioning your gender identity and hoping to talk to other questioning folks?\nWould you like to share your knowledge and expertise in regards to navigating systems that don’t often recognize diversity within gender?\n\nJoin the LGBTQ Center’s peer support/discussion group for campus and community members that identify as transgender\, genderqueer\, or gender-questioning. This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. Instead\, please consider taking advantage of our educational programs and/or resources for supportive families or friends. \nAccommodations for Social Distancing\nTrans Talk Tuesday will be moving online for now. SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Jessica Lin\, MD: "Taking Steps Towards Malaria Elimination: Transmission From the Asymptomatic Reservoir."
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Lin\, MD\, MSCR\n  \nJessica Lin\, MD MSCR is an assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and a principal investigator in the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Ecology Lab at UNC (ideelresearch.org). In her clinical time\, she enjoys working with residents on the Medicine Infectious Disease service and sees both HIV and general ID patients in her Eastowne clinic. Her research lies at the interface of clinical and molecular studies on malaria. She has published widely on the emergence of multi-drug resistant malaria in Southeast Asia. Her current projects focus on 1) determinants of malaria transmission from human hosts to mosquitos and 2) the epidemiology and relapse patterns of Plasmodium ovale in East Africa.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Alan Hinderliter\, MD and Rick Stouffer\, MD: "Renal Denervation for the Treatment of Hypertension"
DESCRIPTION:Alan Hinderliter\, MD\n  \nDr. Hinderliter’s principal clinical interests are hypertension\, echocardiography\, valvular heart disease\, and preventive cardiology. He is a hypertension specialist and sees patients with high blood pressure that is difficult to control in the multidisciplinary UNC Hypertension Clinic. He serves as the medical director of the UNC Hospitals echocardiography laboratory and provides imaging support to the structural heart disease program.  \nDr. Hinderliter’s research has focused on the effects of exercise\, diet\, and weight loss on high blood pressure\, novel therapies for resistant hypertension\, and the relationships of high blood pressure to cardiovascular structure and function. His research laboratory is actively engaged in studying the effects of disease processes\, pharmacologic therapies\, and lifestyle interventions on vascular endothelial function\, and on investigating the cardiovascular manifestations of air pollution. \n  \nRick Stouffer\, MD\n  \nGeorge A. Stouffer\, MD is the Ernest and Hazel Craige Distinguished Professor of Medicine\, Professor of Biomedical Engineering\, Chief of Cardiology and Co-director of the McAllister Heart Institute at the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\, North Carolina\, USA. He is actively involved in clinical and basic science research. His basic science research is in the areas of regulation of smooth muscle cell growth\, thrombin generation\, and renal artery stenosis. His clinical research is in coronary artery disease\, percutaneous coronary intervention and myocardial infarction and he has very involved in research examining the optimal use of CYP2C19 genotyping to selected anti-platelet therapy. He is the author or editor of four textbooks and more than 180 scientific publications and has received research funding from NIH\, AHA and numerous foundations.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Joseph Eron and David Weber: "COVID Update."
DESCRIPTION:Joe Eron\, MD\, and David Weber\, MD\n  \n  \nDr. David Jay Weber has been on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1985 where he is currently the Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Distinguished Professor of Medicine\, Pediatrics and Epidemiology in the UNC School of Medicine\, and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.  Dr. Weber received his Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) degree from Wesleyan University in 1973\, his Medical Degree (M.D.) from the University of California\, San Diego in 1977\, a Master’s in Public Health (M.P.H.) from Harvard University in 1985\, and completed his medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1985.  He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine\, Infectious Disease\, Critical Care Medicine\, and Preventive Medicine.  Dr. Weber serves as an Associate Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Infection Prevention for the UNC Medical Center.  He serves as Medical Director of the NC Program in Infection Control and Epidemiology (SPICE).  He is the Secretary of the Board of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and the Deputy Editor of Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.  Dr. Weber has published more than 500 scientific papers in the peer-reviewed literature cited in PubMed and more than 650 total papers and chapters.  He has trained great than 50 students with an MPH or PhD in Epidemiology.  His research interests include the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections\, disinfection and sterilization\, new and emerging infectious diseases (highly communicable pathogens including SARS-CoV-2\, mewly emerging pathogens including Candida auris)\, response to biothreats\, nontuberculous mycobacteria\, control of drug resistant pathogens\, immunization practices (especially of healthcare personnel)\, zoonotic diseases\, and epidemiology of tuberculosis.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds – Sid Barritt: “Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: New Diagnostic Approaches and Therapeutic Interventions for 2022”
DESCRIPTION:  \nSidney Barritt IV\, MD\, MSCR\, is a tenured associate professor at the University of North Carolina. He is the Director of Hepatology in the UNC liver center and the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program Director. Dr. Barritt conducts clinical outcomes research in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)\, general hepatology\, and liver transplantation.  Dr. Barritt leads the UNC Liver Center’s clinical trial program in NAFLD where he is PI on multiple phase 2 and 3 industry sponsored clinical trials and is also a member of the NIH sponsored Drug Induced Liver Injury Network and the PCORI PAL-Liver study.  Dr. Barritt is also a founding PI for an international registry of patients with liver disease and SARS-CoV2 infection called SECURE-Liver.  Dr. Barritt is a collaborator and advisor to multiple other investigators in the allied schools of health\, including the Gillings School of Global Public Health\, the Eshelman School of Pharmacy\, and the UNC Adams School of Dentistry.  Dr. Barritt is a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and the American College of Gastroenterology.  Outside of work\, Dr. Barritt enjoys spending time with his family\, road running\, and triathlons.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - John Vavalle\, MD - "Percutaneous Valve Therapies: A Revolution in Cardiovascular Care.”
DESCRIPTION:John Vavalle\, MD\, MHS\, FACC\, is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina. He is the Medical Director of the UNC Structural Heart Disease program\, program director of the Structural Heart Fellowship program and associate program director of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship and Interventional Cardiovascular Fellowship programs. Dr. Vavalle’s main areas of interest is in percutaneous structural and valvular heart disease interventions\, as well as coronary interventions. As Medical Director of the Structural Heart Disease Program at UNC\, he successfully performed the first TAVR procedure at UNC in 2014. Dr. Vavalle also leads the UNC Heart Valve Clinic where a multi-disciplinary team of cardiac surgeons\, cardiologists\, and advanced practice providers evaluate patients with valvular heart disease to determine the best treatment options available. With the rapid evolution in the fields of interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery\, Dr. Vavalle focuses on increasing partnerships between the two specialties to create a seamless program where cardiologists and cardiac surgeons work together to perform hybrid and minimally invasive cardiac procedures. Dr. Vavalle also offers procedural expertise in complex coronary interventions\, transcatheter closure of paravalvular leaks\, repair of congenital cardiac defects\, and closure of coronary fistulas. In addition to the UNC Heart Valve Clinic located at the UNC Medical Center\, Dr. Vavalle sees patients in a general cardiology clinic at UNC Heart & Vascular at Meadowmont.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ria Dancel (Ria.Dancel@unchealth.unc.edu) is an associate professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She has been the director of the Medicine Procedure Service since its inception in 2014 and directs the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) elective curriculum and required intern longitudinal curriculum for the Department of Medicine. She is on the steering committee for the Society of Hospital Medicine – American College of Chest Physicians POCUS certificate of completion program and also serves on the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine POCUS task force. She has directed and has been invited to serve as faculty for POCUS workshops and conferences nationally. She is also an award-winning educator\, having won the Med-Peds faculty member of the year award multiple times\, Internal Medicine inpatient faculty of the year\, the Academy of Educators mentor award\, and the 2021 Pediatric Hospital Medicine national Educational Excellence Award. \n  \n  \n \nDr. Tierney is an internal medicine physician at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis\, Minnesota where he has practiced since 2003. He is the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director and clinically works as a hospitalist and proceduralist. He is the founder and director of the Internal Medicine Bedside Ultrasound program (known as IMBUS) that has trained over 300 inpatient and outpatient internal medicine residents & faculty since its inception in 2009. He serves as a co-chair of the American College of Physicians Point-of-Care Ultrasound Program\, is a member of both the Society of Hospital Medicine’s and AAIM’s Point-of-Care Ultrasound Task Force\, and is the course director for several local and national ultrasound courses.

DESCRIPTION:Kevin M. Guskiewicz\, a neuroscientist\, academic leader and concussion researcher\, is the 12th chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. \nPrior to his appointment as chancellor\, Guskiewicz served as the interim chancellor from February 2019 until December 2019. In that role\, he held over 25 listening and learning sessions with constituents across campus. He was instrumental in shaping Carolina’s new strategic plan\, Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good that outlines a roadmap for the University’s priorities moving forward. He relaunched the Tar Heel Bus Tour with 90 faculty and campus leaders\, demonstrating Carolina’s commitment to the state. \nA Kenan Distinguished Professor of Exercise and Sport Science\, he has been a member of Carolina’s faculty since 1995. He is co-director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center. Guskiewicz is a nationally recognized expert on sport-related concussions. He maintains an active research portfolio and is principal investigator or co-principal investigator on three active research grants totaling over $20 million. His groundbreaking work has garnered numerous awards and has influenced concussion guidelines in the NCAA and the NFL.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Berkowitz is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He performs research on population management\, food insecurity\, cost-related medication underuse and the impact of adverse social circumstances on chronic disease management\, particularly with regard to diabetes and other cardiometabolic disease. His goal is to develop interventions and care delivery models that address social and economic needs as part of chronic disease management\, and then evaluate these for both effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Jay Weber has been on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1985 where he is currently the Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Distinguished Professor of Medicine\, Pediatrics and Epidemiology in the UNC School of Medicine\, and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.  Dr. Weber received his Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) degree from Wesleyan University in 1973\, his Medical Degree (M.D.) from the University of California\, San Diego in 1977\, a Master’s in Public Health (M.P.H.) from Harvard University in 1985\, and completed his medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1985.  He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine\, Infectious Disease\, Critical Care Medicine\, and Preventive Medicine.  Dr. Weber serves as an Associate Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Infection Prevention for the UNC Medical Center.  He serves as Medical Director of the NC Program in Infection Control and Epidemiology (SPICE).  He is the Secretary of the Board of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and the Deputy Editor of Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.  Dr. Weber has published more than 500 scientific papers in the peer-reviewed literature cited in PubMed and more than 650 total papers and chapters.  He has trained great than 50 students with an MPH or PhD in Epidemiology.  His research interests include the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections\, disinfection and sterilization\, new and emerging infectious diseases (highly communicable pathogens including SARS-CoV-2\, mewly emerging pathogens including Candida auris)\, response to biothreats\, nontuberculous mycobacteria\, control of drug resistant pathogens\, immunization practices (especially of healthcare personnel)\, zoonotic diseases\, and epidemiology of tuberculosis.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Dr. Ashley Henderson and Dr. Koyal Jain Presenting "Updates In Undergraduate Medical Education - The Journey So Far And The Road Ahead."
DESCRIPTION:Ashley Henderson is an associate professor here at UNC in the division of Pulmonary and Critical Care.  When she first moved here (from Texas) in 1996\, her plan was to do her 3 year residency and return\, but 25 years later she remains at UNC–the school whose medical collaborations and care for patients is second to none.  Although she started out in translational and clinical research so she could be on the faculty\, her long term goal was to be an educator\, and over the years she has held several positions to that aim.  In addition to starting with “CC2”\, teaching the respiratory block\, she helped with the transition to the TEC curriculum both as the respiratory block director and the co-director of medical sciences\, and for the last two years has been the co-director of undergraduate medical education for the school of medicine.  She also has been the director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship program for the last 7.5 years\, and continues to stay clinically active with the medical ICU\, pulmonary consults\, her COPD clinic\, and as part of the multidisciplinary vasculitis clinic.  She’s grateful to never have a boring day at work. \nDr. Koyal Jain is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Jain serves as the co-director of undergraduate medical education in the Department of Medicine. She is currently the renal block director for first year medical students at UNC and the program director for the nephrology training program. Dr. Jain has won multiple awards for her undergraduate medical education including foundation phase outstanding director awards\, best foundation phase block award and excellence in teaching in basic sciences. She was also selected by the medical student body as the Whitehead lecturer for 2020.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Dr. Patricia Rivera and Dr. Jason Long Presenting "Lung Cancer Screening Beyond NLST: Progress\, Challenges and Opportunities."
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rivera is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She joined the faculty at UNC in 1995 and co-founded the first Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program in the country\, a premier program that became the model for multidisciplinary care and defined the vital role pulmonologists play in the care of patients with thoracic malignancies. More recently\, she founded the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Screening Program at UNC and continues to direct both programs. Her expertise includes screening\, diagnosis and staging of lung cancer and management of treatment complications. \nDr. Rivera holds several vital leadership roles at UNC and for more than 20 years has served national pulmonary and cancer societies including the American Thoracic Society (ATS\, The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and the American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Round Table through numerous leadership roles and by sharing her time\, knowledge and passion to advance the field of Thoracic Oncology \nDr. Rivera collaborates with colleagues at UNC on NIH/NCI funded research and has co-developed and serves as Co-Investigator of the North Carolina (NC) Lung Screening Registry\, a statewide initiative to examine the delivery\, quality and outcomes of lung cancer screening and evaluate the extent to which disparities in lung cancer screening outcomes exist. Her ongoing funded research activities also include a multi-institution pilot project exploring presence of coronary artery calcification on lung cancer screening CT and downstream risk stratification and statin delivery and exploring rural/urban disparities associated with biomarker testing in advanced lung cancer. \nDr. Rivera is passionate and committed to medical education and mentoring and has received numerous awards at UNC and from National Societies. She is particularly passionate about developing the next generation of leaders and increasing the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in our field. \n  \n Dr. Long is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. Dr. Long attended UNC-Chapel Hill for Undergraduate and Wake Forest University for Medical School. He completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Chicago and completed his Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Dr. Long is an American Board Certified Thoracic Surgeon and Return to UNC in 2013. He has been the Co-Director of the UNC Lung Cancer Screening Clinic since 2015\, will become the director in April 2022. Dr. Long’s clinical interest are in Thoracic oncology including cancer of lung\, esophagus; lung transplantation; minimally invasive thoracic surgery including robotic surgery; extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO); lung and esophageal surgery. Robotic thoracic surgery\, esophagectomy\, lung cancer surgery\, lung transplantation\, chest wall resection and reconstruction\, thoracic trauma.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Dr. James Kirkland: "Aging\, Cellular Senescence and Senolytics: The Path to Translation."
DESCRIPTION:James L. Kirkland\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, is Director of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at Mayo Clinic and Noaber Foundation Professor of Aging Research. Dr. Kirkland’s research is on the contribution of fundamental aging processes\, particularly cellular senescence\, to age-related and chronic diseases and development of agents and strategies for targeting fundamental aging mechanisms to treat age- and chronic disease-related conditions and morbidities. Additional research areas include molecular and physiological mechanisms of age-related adipose tissue and metabolic dysfunction\, frailty\, and loss of resilience to infections and acute diseases in old age. Dr. Kirkland’s laboratory published the first article about agents that clear senescent cells – senolytic drugs. Dr. Kirkland demonstrated that senolytic agents enhance healthspan and delay\, prevent\, or alleviate multiple age-related disorders and diseases in mouse models. He published the first clinical trials of senolytic drugs and is currently conducting multiple clinical trials of senolytics\, including three clinical trials for COVID-19. He has more than 225 publications and holds over 20 patents. Dr. Kirkland is Principal Investigator of the Translational Geroscience Network (R33 AG061456)\, which brings together 8 academic institutions to translate healthspan interventions\, including senolytics and other drugs that target fundamental aging processes\, from bench to bedside. He is a scientific advisory board member for several companies and academic organizations. He is President of the American Federation for Aging Research\, a past member of the National Advisory Council on Aging of the National Institutes of Health\, past chair of the Biological Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America\, and past member of the Clinical Trials Advisory Panel of the National Institute on Aging. He is a board-certified specialist in internal medicine\, geriatrics\, and endocrinology and metabolism. Dr. Kirkland is the 2020 recipient of the Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction from the American Federation for Aging Research.
