DESCRIPTION:Dr. Berkowitz is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He performs research on population management\, food insecurity\, cost-related medication underuse and the impact of adverse social circumstances on chronic disease management\, particularly with regard to diabetes and other cardiometabolic disease. His goal is to develop interventions and care delivery models that address social and economic needs as part of chronic disease management\, and then evaluate these for both effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.

This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Dr. David Weber Presenting "Infectious Diseases in International Visitors and Afghan Immigrants."
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Jay Weber has been on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1985 where he is currently the Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Distinguished Professor of Medicine\, Pediatrics and Epidemiology in the UNC School of Medicine\, and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.  Dr. Weber received his Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) degree from Wesleyan University in 1973\, his Medical Degree (M.D.) from the University of California\, San Diego in 1977\, a Master’s in Public Health (M.P.H.) from Harvard University in 1985\, and completed his medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1985.  He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine\, Infectious Disease\, Critical Care Medicine\, and Preventive Medicine.  Dr. Weber serves as an Associate Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Infection Prevention for the UNC Medical Center.  He serves as Medical Director of the NC Program in Infection Control and Epidemiology (SPICE).  He is the Secretary of the Board of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and the Deputy Editor of Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.  Dr. Weber has published more than 500 scientific papers in the peer-reviewed literature cited in PubMed and more than 650 total papers and chapters.  He has trained great than 50 students with an MPH or PhD in Epidemiology.  His research interests include the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections\, disinfection and sterilization\, new and emerging infectious diseases (highly communicable pathogens including SARS-CoV-2\, mewly emerging pathogens including Candida auris)\, response to biothreats\, nontuberculous mycobacteria\, control of drug resistant pathogens\, immunization practices (especially of healthcare personnel)\, zoonotic diseases\, and epidemiology of tuberculosis.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Dr. Ashley Henderson and Dr. Koyal Jain Presenting "Updates In Undergraduate Medical Education - The Journey So Far And The Road Ahead."
DESCRIPTION:Ashley Henderson is an associate professor here at UNC in the division of Pulmonary and Critical Care.  When she first moved here (from Texas) in 1996\, her plan was to do her 3 year residency and return\, but 25 years later she remains at UNC–the school whose medical collaborations and care for patients is second to none.  Although she started out in translational and clinical research so she could be on the faculty\, her long term goal was to be an educator\, and over the years she has held several positions to that aim.  In addition to starting with “CC2”\, teaching the respiratory block\, she helped with the transition to the TEC curriculum both as the respiratory block director and the co-director of medical sciences\, and for the last two years has been the co-director of undergraduate medical education for the school of medicine.  She also has been the director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship program for the last 7.5 years\, and continues to stay clinically active with the medical ICU\, pulmonary consults\, her COPD clinic\, and as part of the multidisciplinary vasculitis clinic.  She’s grateful to never have a boring day at work. \nDr. Koyal Jain is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Jain serves as the co-director of undergraduate medical education in the Department of Medicine. She is currently the renal block director for first year medical students at UNC and the program director for the nephrology training program. Dr. Jain has won multiple awards for her undergraduate medical education including foundation phase outstanding director awards\, best foundation phase block award and excellence in teaching in basic sciences. She was also selected by the medical student body as the Whitehead lecturer for 2020.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Dr. Patricia Rivera and Dr. Jason Long Presenting "Lung Cancer Screening Beyond NLST: Progress\, Challenges and Opportunities."
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rivera is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She joined the faculty at UNC in 1995 and co-founded the first Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program in the country\, a premier program that became the model for multidisciplinary care and defined the vital role pulmonologists play in the care of patients with thoracic malignancies. More recently\, she founded the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Screening Program at UNC and continues to direct both programs. Her expertise includes screening\, diagnosis and staging of lung cancer and management of treatment complications. \nDr. Rivera holds several vital leadership roles at UNC and for more than 20 years has served national pulmonary and cancer societies including the American Thoracic Society (ATS\, The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) and the American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Round Table through numerous leadership roles and by sharing her time\, knowledge and passion to advance the field of Thoracic Oncology \nDr. Rivera collaborates with colleagues at UNC on NIH/NCI funded research and has co-developed and serves as Co-Investigator of the North Carolina (NC) Lung Screening Registry\, a statewide initiative to examine the delivery\, quality and outcomes of lung cancer screening and evaluate the extent to which disparities in lung cancer screening outcomes exist. Her ongoing funded research activities also include a multi-institution pilot project exploring presence of coronary artery calcification on lung cancer screening CT and downstream risk stratification and statin delivery and exploring rural/urban disparities associated with biomarker testing in advanced lung cancer. \nDr. Rivera is passionate and committed to medical education and mentoring and has received numerous awards at UNC and from National Societies. She is particularly passionate about developing the next generation of leaders and increasing the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in our field. \n  \n Dr. Long is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. Dr. Long attended UNC-Chapel Hill for Undergraduate and Wake Forest University for Medical School. He completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Chicago and completed his Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Dr. Long is an American Board Certified Thoracic Surgeon and Return to UNC in 2013. He has been the Co-Director of the UNC Lung Cancer Screening Clinic since 2015\, will become the director in April 2022. Dr. Long’s clinical interest are in Thoracic oncology including cancer of lung\, esophagus; lung transplantation; minimally invasive thoracic surgery including robotic surgery; extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO); lung and esophageal surgery. Robotic thoracic surgery\, esophagectomy\, lung cancer surgery\, lung transplantation\, chest wall resection and reconstruction\, thoracic trauma.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Dr. James Kirkland: "Aging\, Cellular Senescence and Senolytics: The Path to Translation."
DESCRIPTION:James L. Kirkland\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, is Director of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at Mayo Clinic and Noaber Foundation Professor of Aging Research. Dr. Kirkland’s research is on the contribution of fundamental aging processes\, particularly cellular senescence\, to age-related and chronic diseases and development of agents and strategies for targeting fundamental aging mechanisms to treat age- and chronic disease-related conditions and morbidities. Additional research areas include molecular and physiological mechanisms of age-related adipose tissue and metabolic dysfunction\, frailty\, and loss of resilience to infections and acute diseases in old age. Dr. Kirkland’s laboratory published the first article about agents that clear senescent cells – senolytic drugs. Dr. Kirkland demonstrated that senolytic agents enhance healthspan and delay\, prevent\, or alleviate multiple age-related disorders and diseases in mouse models. He published the first clinical trials of senolytic drugs and is currently conducting multiple clinical trials of senolytics\, including three clinical trials for COVID-19. He has more than 225 publications and holds over 20 patents. Dr. Kirkland is Principal Investigator of the Translational Geroscience Network (R33 AG061456)\, which brings together 8 academic institutions to translate healthspan interventions\, including senolytics and other drugs that target fundamental aging processes\, from bench to bedside. He is a scientific advisory board member for several companies and academic organizations. He is President of the American Federation for Aging Research\, a past member of the National Advisory Council on Aging of the National Institutes of Health\, past chair of the Biological Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America\, and past member of the Clinical Trials Advisory Panel of the National Institute on Aging. He is a board-certified specialist in internal medicine\, geriatrics\, and endocrinology and metabolism. Dr. Kirkland is the 2020 recipient of the Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction from the American Federation for Aging Research.

This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. Rosenstein\, MD is Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at the University of North Carolina where he is Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Support Program and Division Head of General Adult Psychiatry. Dr. Rosenstein earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Wesleyan University\, his medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine\, and completed his residency training in psychiatry at Yale University. He is the former Clinical Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Past-President of both the Academy of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry and the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS). Dr. Rosenstein and Justin Yopp\, PhD are the authors of The Group: Seven Widowed Fathers Reimagine Life (Oxford University Press).  His current research projects include a multi-site intervention to address cancer-related financial toxicity and screening initiatives for suicide risk in the medical setting.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grands Rounds - Catherine Coombs\, MD\, MS - "Clonal Hematopoiesis and Implications on Health: No Longer Just for Hematologists."
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nDr. Coombs graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine\, followed by internal medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center and fellowship in hematology and oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before taking a faculty position as an assistant professor at UNC in 2016. Her major areas of interest are in leukemia precursor states including clonal hematopoiesis and clonal cytopenias\, in addition to chronic lymphocytic leukemia and small lymphocytic lymphoma. She is heavily collaborative with her research endeavors\, and her research has been published in The Lancet\, New England Journal of Medicine\, Cell Stem Cell\, Nature Genetics\, Blood\, Journal of Clinical Oncology\, among others. She established a precursor clinic at UNC in 2020 where she focuses on seeing individuals with clonal hematopoiesis and clonal cytopenias.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nDr. Cooney is Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University and is currently Chair\, Board of Regents\, of the American College of Physicians (ACP).  At ACP\, he has also served as Chair\, Board of Governors and chair of the Health and Public Policy Committee. He was the program director for OHSU’s Internal Medicine Residency Program from 1984 to 2010 and Vice Chair for Education 1995-2019. Dr. Cooney has been a long-standing member of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine\, serving as President 1997-98. He was also a member of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine from 2003-2010\, including 3 years as Vice Chair. He has been as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Graduate Medical Education since 2012.

SUMMARY:Virtual Interactive Medicine Grand Rounds - April 7- Dr. Keisha Gibson & Dr. Stephanie Brown presenting "Understanding and Navigating Microaggressions."
DESCRIPTION:  \nKeisha L. Gibson\, MD\, is Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatric Nephrology in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also the inaugural Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine. \nDr. Gibson received her medical degree and Masters of Public Health degree in epidemiology from UNC Chapel Hill. She completed a residency in general pediatrics at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and a clinical fellowship in pediatric nephrology from UNC Chapel Hill. She is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. \nHer research and clinical interests focus on lupus nephritis and other glomerular diseases. In the area of epidemiology\, she is interested in ethnic and socioeconomic disparities and their effect on patient outcomes. She has been involved as a co-investigator with large consortium studies such as the Nephrotic Syndrome Network Study (Neptune Study) and the Cure Glomerulonephropathy Network (Cure GN Study). Her peer-reviewed research articles have appeared in Journal of the American Society of Nephrology\, Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology\, Kidney International\, Pediatric Nephrology\, Clinical Nephrology\, Hypertension\, Clinical Kidney Journal\, Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation\, and others. \nDr. Gibson has been recognized with numerous honors. In 2018\, she received the Hyman Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award and in 2019\, was awarded the Foundation Phase Excellence in Teaching Award.  On the national stage she is currently serving as Secretary-Treasurer for the American Society of Nephrology and as Nephrology Councilor for the Society of Pediatric Research. \n  \nA historian by training\, Dr. Stephanie Brown holds a BA and an MA from North Carolina State University and a PhD from UC Berkeley. Before coming to the School of Medicine\, Dr. Brown taught undergraduate courses that focused on themes such as culture\, religion\, race\, ethnicity\, and social inequality; and directed a research program in the Middle East that sought non-traditional ways to engage with and understand groups that had been historically underrepresented or ignored. In the School of Medicine\, Dr. Brown works alongside the SOM’s Vice Dean for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion to lead the DEI mission area for the school in addition to co-leading the office’s DEI education and training initiatives. \n

His research has been focused on innovative models of diabetes care to improve diabetes outcomes and the lives of people with diabetes. \nDr. Gabbay has received funding from the National Institute of Health Diabetes\, Digestive and Kidneys Diseases (NIDDK)\, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)\, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation for his care transformation work. The reach of his work has been recognized through leadership roles in national and international activities including serving as a visiting professor\, keynote speaker and on organizing committees for global meetings of the ADA\, International Diabetes Federation\, Endocrine Society\, and the Diabetes Technology Society. Along with an extensive peer reviewed publication record\, he has also appeared in popular press including the New York Times\, CNN\, Oprah\, the Washington Post and NPR. \nPreviously\, Dr. Gabbay served as the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President at Joslin Diabetes Center\, and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. At Joslin\, he oversaw the clinical care for over 25\,000 patients\, as well as the education and care programs Joslin delivers nationally and internationally. \nDr. Gabbay obtained his B.Sc. Degree at McGill University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin where he published on mechanisms of insulin signaling. He received his M.D. from the State University of New York at Brooklyn School of Medicine with a residency in Internal Medicine at New York Hospital-Cornell and a fellowship in Endocrinology\, Diabetes and Metabolism at a joint Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess-Brigham and Women’s Hospital program at Harvard University. Dr. Gabbay was also a visiting scientist at MIT and a Professor of Medicine at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds: Dr. Myron Cohen presents "Monoclonal Antibodies in Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19: How did we get here and where are we going?"
DESCRIPTION:Myron Scott Cohen was born in Chicago\, Illinois in 1950. Dr. Cohen received his BS degree\, Magna Cum Laude\, from the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana in 1971. He received an MD degree from Rush Medical College\, Chicago\, Illinois. He completed training in internal medicine at the University of Michigan\, and training in infectious diseases at Yale University. After working in 1979 in the Peoples Republic of China on Hemorrhagic Fever with Nephrosonephritis\, Dr. Cohen joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina in 1980. He rose to the rank of Professor over 10 years and served as the Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases from 1991 until 2019. He founded the UNC Institute for Global health and Infectious Diseases in 2007. Dr. Cohen has served as Co-PI of the NIH HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) since 2012 and as one of the founders and leaders of the NIH COVID Prevention Network (CoVPN) in 2020. Dr. Cohen is the Yeargan-Bate Eminent Professor of Medicine\, Microbiology and Immunology\, and Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. \n  \nFor three decades\, Dr. Cohen’s research has focused on the transmission and prevention of transmission of viral pathogens. Importantly\, Dr. Cohen led the development of laboratory methods to measure HIV in genital secretions\, as well as methods to determine the best antiviral agents to reduce replication of HIV in these compartments in men and women. Dr. Cohen served as Principal Investigator of the multinational HPTN 052 trial\, which demonstrated that antiretroviral treatment of people with HIV infection prevents the sexual transmission of the virus. This work was recognized by Science Magazine as the “Breakthrough of the Year” in 2011.  The results led immediately to worldwide changes in HIV treatment guidelines and HIV “treatment as prevention” (TASP) as the central strategy for reduction of transmission of HIV. Subsequently\, Dr. Cohen has led efforts to develop additional tools to prevent HIV acquisition including long-acting injectable antiviral agents and broad neutralizing antibodies. \n  \nSince onset of the COVID-19 pandemic\, Dr. Cohen has worked on vaccines and monoclonal antibodies for prevention of COVID-19 as a leader of the NIH CoVPN. Dr. Cohen spearheaded a “proof of concept” study that demonstrated the Eli Lilly drug\, bamlanivimab\, could prevent COVID-19 in long term care facilities\, protecting a profusion of people at highest risk of serious symptoms and death.  He worked with Regeneron to show that the combination of antibodies called REGEN-COV prevented COVID-19 for five months after administration. \n  \nDr. Cohen is the author of more than six hundred publications and one book. Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American Society for Microbiology\, the American College of Physicians\, and the Infectious Disease Society of America. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine\, the American Society for Clinical Investigation\, and the American Association of Physicians. Dr. Cohen received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Rush Medical College in 2000. He received the Distinguished Career Award for lifetime achievement from the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association in 2005. In 2008\, Dr. Cohen received the O. Max Gardner Award\, the highest honor in the University of North Carolina System. In 2013 Dr. Cohen received the Smadel Award from the Infectious Disease Society in recognition of his work in public health. Also in 2013\, Dr. Cohen received the Award for Science from the State of North Carolina\, its highest civilian honor.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds: Dr. J. Michael McWilliams presents "Harnessing Professionalism: The Forgotten Frontier of Quality Improvement?"
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nMichael McWilliams\, MD\, PhD is the Warren Alpert Foundation Professor of Health Care Policy\, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School\, and a general internist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research spans questions related to health care spending\, quality\, and access\, with an overarching goal of informing policies that support efficiency and equity in health care. His work has focused on 4 areas: 1) the design and effects of payment systems\, 2) the organization and quality of health care delivery\, 3) effects of health insurance coverage\, and 4) quasi-experimental methods for causal inference in observational research. He is currently principal investigator of a Program Project (P01) on the Medicare program funded by the National Institute on Aging. In this and other research supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality\, Commonwealth Fund\, and Arnold Ventures\, he is examining a range of topics\, including Medicare Advantage\, the design of population-based payment models\, risk adjustment\, provider consolidation\, and strategies for leveraging professionalism more productively in health care. \nDr. McWilliams serves as a Senior Advisor to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation and a member of the board of directors for the Institute for Accountable Care. He is also an Associate Editor for JAMA Internal Medicine and a member of the editorial boards for Health Services Research and the American Journal of Managed Care. His work has earned several honors\, including the AcademyHealth HSR Impact Award\, investigator awards from AcademyHealth and the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM)\, and distinctions for specific papers from AcademyHealth\, SGIM\, the National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation\, Health Affairs and NEJM Catalyst. Dr. McWilliams received his BS with highest distinction in biology as a Morehead Scholar from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, his MD magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School\, and his PhD in Health Policy from Harvard University. He completed his residency in general internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
