DESCRIPTION:John Buse\, MD\, PhD is the Verne S. Caviness Distinguished Professor\, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology\, Director of the Diabetes Center\, Director of the NC Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Research at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina. He received his MD and PhD from Duke University before training in internal medicine and endocrinology at the University of Chicago.  Dr Buse currently works with a team of investigators and study coordinators at UNC in the conduct of multicenter and single-site studies in the prevention and treatment of type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus. Dr. Buse completed service as President for Medicine & Science at the American Diabetes Association in 2008. He has received numerous awards and honors\, including the 2010 Castle Connolly National Physician of the Year Award and the 2019 American Diabetes Association Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Diabetes Research Award. He has authored more than 500 publications. \n \nDr. Chaudhry is the James F. Howard Distinguished Professor\, Chief of Division of Neuromuscular Medicine\, and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  He is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and a fellow of the American Neurological Association.  Dr. Chaudhry graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences\, New Delhi\, India\, following which he did training in U.K. leading to membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP).  His Neurology Residency took place at the Universities of Tennessee\, in Memphis\, and University of Alabama\, in Birmingham.  He then finished Neuromuscular Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University and was faculty at that institution for 32 years during which he served as the Vice-Chair of Clinical Affairs\, Director of Johns Hopkins neurology outpatient center\, Director of Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship\, Director of Neuromuscular Medicine fellowship\, and Director of Neuromuscular Division at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Dr. Chaudhry is an adjunct Professor of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine\, Baltimore\, MD\, USA.  He has served on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Neurology Board\, Chair of Neuromuscular section of American Academy of Neurology\, Board of Directors and Secretary of American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.  Dr. Chaudhry has also served as President of the Aiimsonians of America (AOA) and Association of Indian Neurologists in America.  His research focus has been on Wallerian Degeneration in Human Nerves; defining clinical\, electrophysiological\, and IVIG responsiveness of Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN); and chemotherapy-induced polyneuropathies (CIPN) from taxol\, vincristine\, suramin\, thalidomide\, and bortezomib.  He has authored 120 publications.  He has patent for Total Neuropathy Score (TNC©)\, an important tool for establishing the severity of CIPN. He is actively involved in trials of myasthenia gravis\, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis\, and amyloid neuropathy.   Dr. Chaudhry has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including Frank R. Ford Outstanding Teaching Award John Hopkins University School of Medicine\, American Brain Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award (2018) and Distinguished Researcher Award from American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (2020). \n \nDr. Maryam Jowza is an anesthesiologist in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area\, including University of North Carolina Hospitals and Chatham Hospital UNC Health Care. She received her medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and has been in practice between 11-20 years. \n \nDr. Krishna is a board-certified neurosurgeon-scientist with a specialization in functional neurosurgery. He performs surgical procedures to modulate the function of the brain\, spinal cord\, and nerves to treat conditions like neuropathic pain\, essential tremor\, Parkinson’s disease\, and depression. His research is focused on optimizing the neurosurgical treatments and testing emerging interventions in clinical trials.

This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. DESCRIPTION:Katie Allen\, MD\n \nKatie is from Ocala\, Florida\, described as the horse capital of the world. With her two sisters\, she grew up playing the piano and riding horses. While Carolina blue and Michael Jordan were prominent in her childhood\, she stayed in state for college\, attending the University of South Florida in Tampa for both undergraduate and medical school. As a medical student\, she joined the USF Health a cappella group and taught yoga to classmates. During residency\, she became involved in helping develop the Medical Education elective\, training residents in MAT\, and helping lead sessions related to equity in relation to treatment of patients with opiate use disorders. She has a passion for outpatient medicine and is ecstatic to be the outpatient chief this year before she pursues a career in GIM. She also loves cats and has a tuxedo cat named Winston (aka tuxedo cat).  \nMike Croglio\, MD\n \nMike was born in Syracuse\, New York\, where he grew up with his three older siblings. With an internist for a father\, he has always been fascinated with the breadth of clinical care afforded by internal medicine. He attended Georgetown University for his undergraduate degree and Stony Brook University for medical school\, where he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. While he remains a Georgetown basketball fan\, he has enjoyed rooting for the UNC basketball and football teams since moving to North Carolina. His interests include all things music\, golf\, baseball\, and travel. He will pursue a career in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. \nDaniel Duddleston\, MD\n \nDaniel was born and raised in Jackson\, Mississippi and attended Ole Miss for his undergraduate years\, where he studied physics. He is a lifelong Rebel and knows the pain of a cheering for bad football teams. In addition to studying Ole Miss football\, Daniel enjoyed learning about the theories of relativity. He put this to good use by spending time researching black holes with the LIGO team. He later attended medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center\, where he met his wife\, Jessica Duddleston (an ophthalmology resident at UNC!). Daniel and Jessica couples-matched at UNC after meeting his hero and fellow Mississippian\, Dr. Andrew Greganti (everyone’s hero\, really). In his spare time\, Daniel enjoys spending time outside\, playing golf\, traveling\, cooking\, and watching sports. He is interested in pursuing a career in cardiology. \nHillary Spangler\, MD\n \nHillary\, originally from Asheboro\, NC completed her undergraduate work in Nutrition and Biology at NC State and started wearing both red and Carolina Blue when she attended UNC for medical school. During her training\, she developed a passion for quality improvement and participated in multiple QI initiatives\, including UNC’s Code Sepsis Project and received a 2021-2022 Institute for Healthcare Quality Improvement grant for the implementation of a patient deterioration scoring system. Her academic and clinical interests include point-of-care ultrasound\, curriculum development\, clinical research and quality of life in the geriatric population. Hillary is the author of several children’s books\, including most recently\, The Sweetest Victory. She is excited and honored to serve as the 2021-2022 Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Chief Resident and will be applying for geriatrics fellowship. \nMonty Williams\, MD\n \nHis name is De-Vaughn\, but family and friends sometimes call him Monty. Born and raised in Boynton Beach\, FL\, he attended the University of Florida in Gainesville where he received a degree in food science and human nutrition. He remained at UF for medical school and was very involved with the student-run free clinics and elected into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. De-Vaughn enjoys reading on topics of faith\, fantasy\, and mystery\, as well as gardening\, dancing\, and experiencing new foods with friends. He is considering general internal medicine.

DESCRIPTION:Flyer \n \nSidney C. Smith\, Jr.\, M.D. is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology. Dr Smith received his Medical Doctorate from Yale Medical School and completed his medical internship\, residency\, and cardiology fellowship at the Brigham Hospital/Harvard Medical School\, Boston\, MA. \nDr Smith is a past president of the American Heart Association (AHA) and has also served as the Chief Science Officer for the AHA. He chaired the ACC/AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines\, the ACC/AHA committee to revise PCI guidelines\, the AHA/ACC Guidelines on Secondary Prevention for patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease and served on the ACC/AHA guideline committees for the management of acute myocardial infarction (STEMI)\, Blood Cholesterol\, Risk Prediction\, Lifestyle and Hypertension. Dr. Smith was Co-Chair of the ACC/AHA Bethesda Conference on Professionalism and Ethics. \nDr. Smith is a Past President of the World Heart Federation (WHF). He served as chair of the WHF Scientific Advisory Board and was Co-Chair of the Scientific Programs for the 2006 World Congress of Cardiology (WCC) in Barcelona\, the 2008 WCC in Buenos Aires\, the 2010 WCC in Beijing\, and the 2012 WCC in Dubai. He served as Chair of the Executive Committee for the National Heart\, Lung\, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health’s Integrated Guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. \nDr Smith has been elected to Fellow status for the American Heart Association\, American College of Physicians\, European Society of Cardiology\, and Royal Society of Medicine. He is a Master Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. \nHe has received the AHA’s Physician of the Year Award\, Distinguished National Leadership Award\, Gold Heart Award\, Eugene Drake Award\, Joseph Stokes Award in Preventive Cardiology\, Council of Clinical Cardiology Distinguished Achievement Award\, Chairman’s Award\, the James Herrick Distinguished Clinician Award \, and the Ron Haddock International Impact Award as well as the Brazilian Cardiology Society International Teaching Award. Dr. Smith is the recipient of the NHLBI/NIH Award of Special Recognition. \nDr. Smith has authored or co-authored more than 400 published papers and chapters and has served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine\, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Cardiology\, Journal of the American College of Cardiology\, Circulation and JAMA Cardiology. In 2017 he was noted on Thomson Reuters list of Highly Cited Researchers\, which recognizes the top 1 percent of researchers in their field. He has spoken about heart disease and stroke in interviews with CNN\, CBS\, and NBC\, and is quoted widely by multiple national and international media. Yearly since 1998 Dr. Smith has been elected to Best Doctors in America.

DESCRIPTION:Stephan Moll\, MD\nDr. Moll is a hematologist and Professor of Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill. His clinical expertise is coagulation\, with focus on thrombosis and anticoagulation\, and research interests include clinical trials on new and established anticoagulants. His main professional goals are to (1) enhance national and local patient and health care provider education activities on venous thromboembolism\, (2) continue to build an “Athletes and Blood Clot Program”\, (3) support trainees in their career development in coagulation/hematology\, and (4) collaborate to find the cause of and determine appropriate treatment for the uncommon thrombotic disorder livedoid vasculopathy. \n  \n“Beginning at 11:45 am\, there will be a musical performance by the “DooR to DooR” program\, a non-profit UNC hospital art program that provides music and art to brighten the days of patients and their family members\, as well as of hospital staff. DESCRIPTION:Trans Talk Tuesday\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom – Contact Facilitator for Link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn LGBTIQ spaces do you feel like the T is left out?\nWould you like to connect with folks around topics of gender identity and gender expression?\nAre you questioning your gender identity and hoping to talk to other questioning folks?\nWould you like to share your knowledge and expertise in regards to navigating systems that don’t often recognize diversity within gender?\n\nJoin the LGBTQ Center’s peer support/discussion group for campus and community members that identify as transgender\, genderqueer\, or gender-questioning. This space is meant to provide community and connection amongst folks on the basis of gender identity. All students\, staff\, faculty\, community members with these identities are welcome. \nNote to Allies\nWe have been asked if allies are welcome. As this space is not meant to be an educational space where people have to explain their identities\, we ask that people who do not identify as part of the transgender community (i.e.\, cisgender allies) not attend. Instead\, please consider taking advantage of our educational programs and/or resources for supportive families or friends. \nAccommodations for Social Distancing\nTrans Talk Tuesday will be moving online for now. SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds: Dr. Jennifer McEntee & Dr. Frances Collichio presents "Faculty Development of Teachers"
DESCRIPTION:Frances Collichio is the Associate Program Director for the Hematology Oncology Fellowship program at UNC.  Thirty-one years in the field with a variety of positions\, including in private practice at the beginning of her career\, led her to a depth of appreciation for the work and dedication that is needed for excellence in patient care and teaching.  Dr. Collichio kept as her main mission\, education. In graduate medical education she was part of the inception of the in-training examination of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for fellows. She was part of the Milestones committees of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) including the small group that wrote the Hematology Oncology Milestones.  She served on the Council for the Alliance Subspecialty Professors where she advanced many positions\, including family leave. Besides her work as an educator\, Dr. Collichio is a physician who specializes in complex skin oncology\, researching and publishing in the field\, a wife\, mother\, and proud grandmother of two wonderful boys. She enjoys running\, biking\, and creating artwork from found objects.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds: Dr. Natalie Grover presents "An Internist's Guide to Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Natalie Grover is an assistant professor in the division of hematology and clinical director of the cellular therapy program at the UNC School of Medicine. She received her MD from Case Western Reserve University. She completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia and her hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her primary clinical and research interest is in novel therapies for the treatment of lymphoma\, particularly chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy. She leads several CAR-T cell clinical trials in lymphoma and collaborates with translational researchers to bring these novel therapies to the clinic. She is interested in innovative approaches to improve the efficacy and safety of CAR-T cell therapy as well as investigations of why some patients progress after treatment. She is also involved in multi-center clinical trials and research collaborations with the goal of improving treatment options and quality of life for patients with lymphoma.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds- Dr. Marshall Fleurant presents: "ACE's and the Relationship to the African American Population"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Marshall Fleurant is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics\, Grady Division. He serves as a medical director for the primary care clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. As a Clinician Educator\, he oversees medical residents and students in the inpatient wards. He is a clinical preceptor for medical students and residents at the Grady Hospital Primary Care Clinic. Dr. Fleurant’s main interests include trauma-informed care\, its application in improving health access\, health disparities and improving primary care for underserved populations\, preserving the safety net for the underserved\, and strengthening the field of primary care. His publications include a contributed chapter on the book “Tectonic Shifts: Haiti Since the Earthquake” and the text Trauma-Informed Healthcare Approaches A Guide for Primary Care.” \nDr. Fleurant received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He completed a general medicine fellowship at Harvard University School of Medicine and completed a Master’s in Public Health at Harvard School of Public Health with a focus on Clinical Effectiveness. He has practiced as a Clinician Educator at Boston University School of Medicine and worked as a private practitioner at Kaiser Permanente\, The Southeastern Permanente Medical Group. Dr. Fleurant hopes to use his experience and interest in underserved populations to affect policy and contribute to improving the quality of care given through primary care while simultaneously improving the practice life of physicians who practice primary care. \n

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds- Scott Keller\, De Vaughn (Monty) Williams\, MD\, & John Falk Presents: "Enhancing Clinical Communication to Improve Patient Care and Reputational Metrics"
DESCRIPTION:Scott is the Director of Business Development in the Department of Medicine at UNC. In this role\, he works throughout the health care system to help implement and support new projects focused on delivering higher value care and improving the way we operate. He has worked at UNC since 2010 and is a graduate of Miami University (B.S. – Engineering Physics) and the University of Kentucky (MHA). Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his wife Julie and three young children (Adelaide (4)\, Wesley (2)\, Cole (9 mos). \n  \n  \n \nMy name is De-Vaughn Williams–affectionately known as  Monty to friends and family. Born and raised in the melting pot that is South Florida\, I moved to the research triangle in 2018 with an interest and appreciation for those of diverse backgrounds and walks of life. My hope is to approach each patient-physician relationship with holistic and comprehensive attention to patient goals\, social determinants of health\, nutrition\, mental health\, and preventative medicine through education. My faith\, family\, and friends are my biggest source of support and I’m excited to give back to a community that has provided me with wonderful opportunities and resources. \n  \n \nJohn is the Director of Clinical Operations Support at UNC Hospitals. John works with a team of project managers and analysts to partner with clinical departments to plan and implement organization-wide projects and initiatives. John is a life-long Tar Heel. He is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill (B.A. – Political Science\, History) and the UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health (MHA).

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Di Bisceglie completed his medical school education and internal medicine residency in South Africa before coming to the NIH in Bethesda\, MD to complete a fellowship in liver diseases.  There\, he rose through the ranks to become Chief of the Liver Diseases Section before moving to join the faculty of Saint Louis University in 1994.  He served on the faculty there for 25 years\, including a 12-year period as Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and he is now an Emeritus Professor.  Most recently Dr. Di Bisceglie has been serving as Chief Medical Officer for HighTide Therapeutics since 2019. \nHis research has been in the area of viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma and he has been the recipient of NIH funding to conduct both clinical and laboratory-based research in these areas.  Dr. Di Bisceglie is the author or co-author of more than 500 original articles and book chapters in the medical literature.  He served for 5 years on the Governing Board of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and was president of that professional organization in 2014.  He has also served as a member of the Governing Board of SLUCare (the Physician Organization of Saint Louis University) and a member of the Governing Board of Saint Louis University Hospital from 1998 to 2000. \n  \nDr. Di Bisceglie is the recipient of a number of awards including: \n\nWhite House Certificate of Appreciation\, in association with AASLD\, in recognition of leadership in the prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis on World Hepatitis Day 2014\nBeing a recipient of the AASLD Distinguished Service Award in 2018\nOutstanding St. Louis Scientist Award from the Academy of Science of St. Louis\n\n
