SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds- 2023 Blythe Lecture Speaker: Dr. Jonathan Himmelfarb presents: "Kidney Precision Medicine”
DESCRIPTION:I have been an independently funded NIH investigator for over 30 years\, with a consistent focus on conducting clinical and translational research targeting the major complications of kidney disease\, a public health problem affecting 850 million people worldwide\, 37 million US adults\, and is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. In 2008 I became the inaugural Director of the Kidney Research Institute (KRI)\, Professor of Medicine\, and holder of the Joseph W. Eschbach M.D. Endowed Chair in Kidney Research at the University of Washington. The KRI was established with the mission to conduct research that can improve the lives of people living with kidney disease. Under my leadership\, the KRI has catalyzed kidney-disease related research across the entire University of Washington and nationwide\, obtaining over $200 million in aggregate extra-mural funding\, enrolling over 8000 participants in the registry and/or clinical studies of kidney diseases\, and generating over 1500 peer-reviewed research publications. The KRI has pioneered patient engagement efforts with the establishment of the Patient Advisory Committee\, in addition to an external Scientific Advisory Committee. I have continued with my own research including the development of a “kidney-on-a-chip” microphysiological system and leading the Central Hub and Chairing the Steering Committee for the Kidney Precision Medicine Project\, a top priority for the NIH/NIDDK. I have been conducting collaborative clinical research throughout my career\, and have participated as PI\, Co-I\, DSMB or EAC member of multiple NIH-sponsored cohort studies and clinical trials\, including PICARD\, DAC\, HFMC\, HDNT\, ASSESS-AKI\, Re-Building a Kidney\, Novel Biomarkers of Fibrosis\, ISCHEMIA-CKD\, the Kidney Precision Medicine Project\, and the NCATS Organs on Chips consortium. Up until recently\, I served as the Co-Principal Investigator for the UW Division of Nephrology T32 training grant.\nIn 2016\, I also co-founded and became co-Director of the UW Center for Dialysis Innovation (CDI). The CDI is currently developing and testing a series of novel and innovative technologies for dialysis\, and aligning these technologies with what matters most to patients\, culminating with a robustly and compactly designed portable and/or wearable dialysis system. CDI’s unique\, patient-oriented approach has been supported by the work of a Human Factors team\, to make sure our technology truly addresses the needs of the end user – the patient. The CDI has won multiple KidneyX prizes including in the artificial kidney and patient innovator competitions. The CDI-sponsored annual IDEAS conference has become the global centerpiece event for dialysis innovators\, stakeholders\, and patients to come together and share their work toward transforming dialysis.\nI have served on numerous study sections and grant review committees\, and scientific advisory boards and have held leadership positions in many national and international nephrology societies. I have been a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine Subspecialty Board on Nephrology\, a Councilor of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and was President of the ASN in 2014-2015. I led efforts within ASN to create a roadmap for Diversity and Inclusion and was the inaugural co-Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. I have served on expert panels for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration\, Veterans Health Administration\, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and other organizations. I have served on numerous editorial boards and am the author of more than 350 peer-reviewed publications. In addition\, I have sponsored/mentored over 40 post-docs\, nephrology fellows and graduate students\, the majority of whom have gone on to successful academic careers. I have received a number of awards over my career; and in 2021\, the American Society of Nephrology conferred the Belding H. Scribner lifetime achievement award for ‘outstanding contributions that directly impact the care of patients with kidney diseases or have substantially changed the clinical practice of Nephrology’.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eric Garland\, PhD\, LCSW is a Distinguished Endowed Chair in Research\, Distinguished Professor\, and Associate Dean for Research at the University of Utah College of Social Work and Director of the Center on Mindfulness and Integrative Health Intervention Development (C-MIIND). Dr. Garland is the developer of an innovative mindfulness-based therapy founded on insights derived from affective neuroscience\, called Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE). He has published more than 220 scientific manuscripts and received more than $70 million in research grants to conduct clinical trials of mindfulness for addiction and chronic pain. In recognition of his expertise\, Dr. Garland was appointed by NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins to the NIH HEAL Multi-Disciplinary Working Group to help guide the $1.1 billion HEAL initiative to use science to halt the opioid crisis. In a recent bibliometric analysis of mindfulness research published over the past 55 years\, Dr. Garland was found to be the most prolific author of mindfulness research in the world.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Reeder-Hayes is a health services researcher with a focus on Black-White racial breast cancer disparities and the comparative effectiveness of cancer treatments in diverse populations. In addition to her clinical training as a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer\, her research training includes a master’s degree in clinical research from the UNC School of Public Health and a post-doctoral fellowship in comparative effectiveness research from the UNC Sheps Center for Health Services Research. She has previously led Big Data analyses of race and age disparities in the receipt of breast cancer surgery\, endocrine therapy initiation and adherence\, use of HER2-directed therapy\, and use of gene expression profiling\, and is the Medical Director of the UNC Cancer Informatics and Population Health Resource (CIPHR) linked data repository\, where her lab focuses on how race and geography impact the quality and timeliness of cancer care. She also works with patient-reported\, biological\, and medical record data from the Carolina Breast Cancer Study to model genomic and treatment contributors to racial disparities in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. She has an extensive portfolio of research in the area of adherence to breast cancer endocrine therapy as it relates to racial disparities in HR+ breast cancer\, and co-leads the national\, R01-funded GETSET randomized control trial\, testing a variety of technology-based interventions to improve adherence to endocrine therapy in diverse breast cancer patients through the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. She is a national leader of organizations impacting breast cancer disparities\, as past Chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Health Equity Committee and a member of the Alliance Health Disparities and Breast committees.

DESCRIPTION:Raj Kasthuri is a Professor in the Division of Hematology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Kasthuri completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago before pursuing a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of Minnesota. He joined the faculty at UNC Chapel Hill in 2007. \nDr. Kasthuri’s clinical and research interests are in disorders of Hemostasis and Thrombosis\, and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). He is the Director of the UNC HHT Center of Excellence and the Associate Director for Clinical Research at the UNC Blood Research Center. He was involved in the design and conduct of a number of clinical trials in HHT\, two of which are ongoing. \nThe UNC HHT Center is one of a few centers in the country that were awarded federal funding by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in 2022. Dr. Kasthuri has collaborated with the Cure HHT foundation on a number of physician and patient education efforts over the last 12 years.

She completed her medical training at Duke University School of Medicine and subsequently completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, Harvard Medical School. \nAfter residency\, she remained at Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, where she completed her general gastroenterology fellowship and a formal one-year Bariatric Endoscopy Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Christopher C. Thompson. To date\, this is the only formal bariatric endoscopy fellowship in the United States. She has a special interest in resource-limited settings and spent 16 years practicing medicine in Rwanda\, providing medical relief and medical education to postgraduates at the University of Rwanda. She is interested in the intersection of infectious diseases and chronic illness. \nDr. Caleb King primarily works for the UNC-Chapel Hill Institute for Convergent Science (ICS). He is interested in cross-disciplinary studies within the sciences. Dr. King holds a medical degree and engineering degrees which he utilized in his 16 years in Rwanda to help the citizens of Rwanda medically and structurally by building a power grid in remote regions. His goal is to train students to be able to apply their knowledge across a variety of fields in the sciences. \n

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds- Dr. John Abramson presents: "Why We Can't Trust the Evidence in Evidence-Based Medicine"
DESCRIPTION:After completing a residency in Family Medicine and a 2-year Robert Wood Johnson fellowship\, Dr. John Abramson practiced as a family physician for 20 years in a small town an hour north of Boston.   He also served for 7 years as chair of the department of family practice at Lahey Clinic. He has been on the Harvard Medical School faculty since 1997 and is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Health Care Policy. \nIn 2002\, after becoming aware of the uncorrected misrepresentations about the benefits and dangers of Vioxx and Celebrex in our most respected medical journals\, Dr. Abramson left his practice to devote his full attention to researching the quality of the information doctors must rely on. In September 2004 he published Overdo$ed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine. Just one week later\, Vioxx was withdrawn in the biggest drug recall ever\, but not before it had killed between 40 and 60\,000 Americans\, despite providing no better relief than inexpensive OTC anti-inflammatory drugs. \nFrom 2005 through the present\, Dr. Abramson has continued his research and served as an expert in litigation involving prescription drugs and medical devices\, with each case giving him access to millions of pages of confidential corporate documents and unreleased clinical trial data. He has also served as a consultant to the FBI and U. S. Department of Justice\, including a case that led to what was\, at the time\, the largest criminal fine in U.S. history. \nDr. Abramson has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals\, made numerous national media appearances\, and written many op-ed pieces\, including 2 in the New York Times. His primary research interest is the extent to which the commercial takeover of medical knowledge\, primarily by drug companies\, is compromising the quality of medical information available to even the most dedicated doctors\, harming our health\, and wasting enormous amounts of Americans’ wealth. In February 2022 Dr. Abramson published his second book\, Sickening: How Big Pharma Broke American Health Care and How We Can Repair It.

DESCRIPTION:Mariana Castells\, M.D.\, Ph.D. is a clinician-scientist with over 30 years of experience in allergy and immunology. Additionally\, she is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School with over 200 publications. She is the Director of the Brigham and Women’s Mastocytosis Center one of the few nationally and internationally recognized centers of excellence which provides diagnosis\, management\, and treatment options for patients with mastocytosis and mast cell activation disorders\, which are rare and potentially deadly disorders currently addressed with Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors. Additionally\, she is the Director of the Drug Hypersensitivity and Desensitization Center at Brigham and Women’s and Dana Farber Cancer Institute which provides over 900 high risk desensitization’s per year for over 20 years to patients with cancer\, severe infections and inflammatory diseases who are allergic to their first line therapy\, increasing their life expectancy and quality of life.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nLeslie Appleton\, MD\, MPH\nInpatient Chief Resident  \nLeslie Appleton is a native Arizonan who earned her MD MPH from the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix. She earned her BA in politics from Pomona College\, after which she joined President Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign in Chicago. In 2013\, Leslie began working for the federal government\, holding positions in both the White House and the US Department of Health and Human Services. She is an avid reader and otherwise enjoys cooking\, playing sports\, enjoying the outdoors\, and seeing the world. \n  \n  \n  \n\n\n \nCasey Birschbach\, MD\nOutpatient Chief Resident \nCasey grew up in the small town of Deerfield\, Wisconsin and studied biology and global cultures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She taught seventh-grade math and reading in Milwaukee for a year before returning to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health for medical school. There\, she developed her interests in Internal Medicine and medical education. She journeyed down south to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her residency in Internal Medicine and now serves as the Ambulatory Chief Resident for the program. Following her Chief Residency year\, she plans to pursue primary care. In her free time\, Casey enjoys cooking\, true crime podcasts\, and exploring local restaurants with her husband\, Ryan. \n\n  \n\nAaron Fried\, MD\, MBA\nInpatient Chief Resident  \nAaron grew up outside of Los Angeles before completing his undergraduate work in Biology and Hispanic Studies at Boston College. He spent one year with a biopharmaceutical research team in Boston before moving yet again for medical school\, this time to the Midwest. At Creighton University\, Aaron completed a dual MD/MBA degree program and was inducted into the AOA and Gold Humanism Honor Society. Now in North Carolina\, Aaron stays busy outside of work with his two young daughters\, Addison and Elise\, and his wife\, Katie. They love to explore the outdoors\, eat their way around the Triangle\, and have game nights with family and friends. Aaron also loves to play basketball\, golf\, table tennis\, surf\, and snowboard. His academic interests include medical education\, health process innovation\, and quality improvement\, and he plans to pursue a career in hospital medicine. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nMegan Hoppens\, MD\nMed-Peds Chief Resident \nMegan was born in Fort Collins\, CO\, and attended Tulane University for her undergraduate work in Neuroscience. Not ready to leave New Orleans\, she continued her training at LSU School of Medicine. In medical school\, Megan was inducted into AOA and was an active member of the Flu Fighters Band and founding member of the Dermatones Accapella Group. She enjoyed the rich culture of New Orleans food and music\, as well as frequent fishing trips with her dad. She couples matched with her classmate and now husband\, Mark Hoppens\, at UNC for residency. During her 4th year of residency\, she welcomed a beautiful baby girl and her pride and joy\, Diana Marie. After her chief year\, Megan plans to pursue a career in primary care with a particular interest in medically underserved patient populations and outpatient procedures. During her free time\, Megan enjoys listening to live music any chance she gets\, hiking with her family\, and traveling to new places. \n  \nMichael Rydberg\, MD\nWake-Med Chief Resident \nMichael is a Minnesota native who attended Davidson for college\, studying biology and ultimate frisbee. After working in Charlotte for a year doing research and quality improvement work\, Michael went to the University of Chicago for medical school. He was torn between urology and medicine and spent 2 years in Urology residency at the Cleveland Clinic before deciding to follow his heart and switch to medicine. He is currently the UNC chief resident at WakeMed. Following the chief year\, Michael will pursue fellowship training in geriatrics. \nOutside of the hospital\, Michael enjoys spending time with his wife and young son\, playing all the sports\, and spending time outdoors.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Martin Shapiro obtained his medical degree from McGill University and a Ph.D. in history and a Master’s in Public Health from UCLA. He is a Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell and a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Public Health at UCLA. Prior to coming to Cornell\, he spent many years at UCLA\, where he was chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research for 25 years. He is a general internist who has practiced both inpatient and outpatient GIM. He also is a health services researcher who has studied accessibility of care and health disparities\, scientific misconduct\, pharmaceutical advertising\, and scientific authorship\, among other topics. He led a major national study of care for HIV disease. He is also interested in such conditions as hypertension and hepatitis C\, in empowering communities in relation to the research enterprise\, and in trying to improve health and health care for those most in need. He is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and of the Association of American Physicians and is a past president of the Society of General Internal Medicine. He enjoys mentoring students\, residents\, fellows\, and junior faculty members. His new book\, The Present Illness: American Health Care and Its Afflictions\, has just been published by Johns Hopkins University Press. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:JOHN A. BATSIS\, MD\, FACP\, FTOS\, AGSF\, FGSA is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Division of Geriatric Medicine\, School of Medicine\, the Division of Geriatric Medicine. He has a joint appointment in the Department of Nutrition in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Batsis was previously on the faculty as an Associate Professor at Dartmouth from 2008 to 2020\, after which he joined UNC Chapel Hill in September 2020. He provides clinical care in the outpatient and nursing home setting to older adults with obesity\, multimorbidity\, and frailty. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians\, the American Geriatrics Society\, the Gerontological Society of America\, and the Obesity Society\nDr. Batsis is a geriatrician and health services researcher. He is board certified in Internal Medicine\, Geriatrics\, and Obesity Medicine. His work has focused on understanding the interplay between fat and muscle in older adults in large datasets but also in conducting clinical trials in older adults focusing on improving physical function during weight loss efforts. He is a transdisciplinary team scientist\, working collaboratively with engineers and computer scientists in the development\, validation\, and application of different types of research-grade and commercial technologies for health promotion in older adult populations\, including using remote patient monitoring and telemedicine.\nDr. Batsis is funded by the National Institute on Aging\, and the National Institute of Diabetes\, Digestive\, and Kidney Diseases\, and has published over 185 papers. He is heavily involved at the national level in many levels. He is Chair-Elect of The Obesity Society’s Clinical Research Section\, a long-standing member of the American Geriatrics Society’s research committee\, Co-Chair of its Diversity in Research Subcommittee\, and Chair of the Research Methods Subcommittee. In addition\, he is co-Chair of the Obesity Section of the Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Batsis is on the editorial boards of two prominent aging journals\, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and the Journal of Gerontological Medical Sciences. Finally\, he is a member of a recently published consensus statement put forth by the European Association for the Study of Obesity and the European Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition on the Diagnosis of Sarcopenic Obesity and a member of the Global Initiative for the Study of Sarcopenia Initiative.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dave is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine\, Director of Abacus Evaluation\, and the Co-Director of the Center for Health Equity Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Dr. Dave trained as an emergency medicine physician in India with a master’s and a doctorate in public health from UNC-Greensboro. He has over 20 years of experience in clinical\, public health\, and evaluation research. Dr. Dave is an MPI for the National Institutes of Health’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics-Underserved Populations (RADx-UP). The RADx-UP Program provides critical findings to inform ongoing SARS-CoV-2 public health efforts to improve the reach\, acceptance\, uptake\, and sustainability of COVID-19 testing and prevention in marginalized and vulnerable communities across the United States. Dr. Dave is a Principal Investigator for two NHLBI-funded R01 studies that aim to address adverse social determinants of health associated with chronic disease risk in rural North Carolina. He is also a site Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on multiple grants funded by the National Heart\, Blood\, and Lung Institute\, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences\, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, and the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Dave’s research focuses on mitigating adverse social determinants of health and eliminating health inequities associated with chronic conditions in historically marginalized and rural communities.

Dr. Dellon received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.  He performed a clinical and a research fellowship in Adult Gastroenterology at UNC\, during which he also received a Masters of Public Health degree in Epidemiology from the UNC School of Public Health. Dr. Dellon is currently the Director of the UNC Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing (CEDAS) and has served as an Associate Editor for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.  Dr. Dellon’s main research interest is in the epidemiology\, pathogenesis\, diagnosis\, treatment\, and outcomes of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and eosinophilic GI diseases (EGIDs). The goal of his research is to improve the lives of patients with EoE and EGIDs by learning how to better diagnose\, treat\, and monitor these conditions.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Wesley Burks is CEO of UNC Health\, Dean of the UNC School of Medicine\, and Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. He has led the statewide academic health system since January\, 2019. \nUNC Health’s network spans the state of North Carolina\, currently including 16 hospitals or hospital systems\, the clinical programs of the UNC School of Medicine\, and an expansive provider network. The UNC School of Medicine is consistently rated as one of the nation’s leading public medical schools for both research and clinical training. \nDuring Burks’ tenure as CEO\, UNC Health has expanded its network\, adding multiple hospitals and establishing new clinical and educational partnerships. Burks has also spearheaded work to better unify and integrate UNC Health’s statewide system and to create a world class workplace culture. Each of these changes is meant to help UNC Health better meet its mission to “improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina.” \nPrior to being named Dean and CEO\, Burks spent more than 30 years taking care of patients\, conducting research\, and helping to educate trainees. He joined UNC-Chapel Hill in 2011 as physician-in-chief of the North Carolina Children’s Hospital and was named chair of the Department of Pediatrics in 2012\, as well as the Curnen Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics. In 2015\, he was named executive dean of the UNC School of Medicine\, during which he oversaw the school’s focus on rural health initiatives\, and primary care education\, a program has been consistently rated among the nation’s best. \nAn internationally renowned expert on food allergies\, specifically peanut allergy\, Burks and colleagues lead several immunotherapy clinical studies\, and his initial work on peanut allergies is cited as the basis for potential peanut allergy treatment regimens currently under FDA review. Burks is a past chair and member of the NIH Hypersensitivity\, Autoimmune\, and Immune-mediated Diseases study section and is Past President of the American Academy of Allergy\, Asthma and Immunology. \nBurks graduated from the University of Central Arkansas and then the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He completed a pediatric residency at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital and a fellowship in allergy and immunology at Duke University Medical Center. He served on the faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children’s Hospital and Duke University Medical Center before joining the UNC School of Medicine. \n  \n \nCristy Page\, MD\, MPH\, is a family physician and national leader in rural healthcare delivery and workforce development. \nShe currently serves as Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine\, a position she has held since 2019. In this role\, she oversees the school’s tripartite mission of clinical care\, teaching\, and research. Under Page’s leadership\, the UNC School of Medicine has made great strides toward realizing the vision of being known as the nation’s leading public school of medicine. \nPage has overseen a continual increase in research funding. In 2022\, funding exceeded $600 million for the first time\, growing by more than $100 million since 2019. The School is also in the midst of a period of growth in medical education. In the spring of 2023\, the UNC School of Medicine will open Roper Hall\, a new medical education building. In the coming years\, the School will also expand its class size to better meet the healthcare needs of North Carolina. \nIn addition to her leadership within the UNC School of Medicine\, Page also serves as the Chief Academic Officer of UNC Health. In this role\, she oversees the educational and research enterprise across UNC Health’s statewide system. She is responsible for the expansion and development of branch campuses to train more health providers\, strategic growth of residency programs in affiliated hospitals\, expansion of clinical trials to new communities\, and leadership of statewide faculty\, among other priorities. \nShe is also a member of the UNC Health Board of Directors and UNC Health Executive Council\, where she collaborates with other senior leaders to set the vision and oversee strategic planning\, financial management\, and operations for the statewide UNC Health system\, as well as a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine\, where she previously served as Chair. \nPage’s vision and leadership have also helped expand the clinical\, research\, and educational footprint of the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health. She has been instrumental in a partnership with fellow North Carolina system Novant Health to work together in the Wilmington\, North Carolina region. As the founder of the Rural GME and Teaching Health Center GME Center\, Page and colleagues have worked to enhance access to care in underserved areas across the nation. The consortium focuses on increasing access to care through support for the development of new rural residency programs across multiple specialties as well as health policy and health workforce scholarship. The consortium has produced extensive research on rural health workforce development and successfully informed policies that support increased access to underserved care. Since 2018\, the consortium has directly supported 58 new programs that received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Program\, as well as an additional 46 programs through the Teaching Health Center Planning and Development (THCPD) Program. A total of 463 new rural training positions have been accredited since the program’s inception. Federal funding for the national centers over the last 3 years is nearly $13 million\, with an additional $2M pending. \nA native of Wilmington and lifelong North Carolinian\, Page first came to UNC as a Morehead Scholar before going on to complete her Medical Doctorate\, Master of Public Health\, family medicine residency\, chief resident position\, and faculty development fellowship in Chapel Hill. His practice and translational research focus on characterizing the cell\, tissue\, and physiologic changes in the development of specific autoimmune kidney diseases and developing new approaches for studying autoimmunity\, inflammation\, and basic neutrophil/monocyte biology. After the discovery in 1988 by Dr. Falk and colleagues of myeloperoxidase anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (MPO-ANCA)\, his laboratory has focused on clinical and translational science investigation of the immunogenesis\, pathogenesis\, and response to treatment of ANCA vasculitis and other autoimmune kidney diseases. \nDr. Falk is a highly respected scholar and mentor who has guided\, for over three decades\, young physicians\, scientists\, and physician-scientists to successful careers in academia and industry. \nDr. Falk has served in various capacities within the American Society of Nephrology\, including numerous committees and the ASN Council. He served as its president from 2011-12. A notable achievement during his term as president was the founding of the Kidney Health Initiative in 2012\, which is a public/private partnership of the American Society of Nephrology and the U.S. FDA. During his tenure as ASN President\, the American Society of Nephrology Foundation for Kidney Research was established with a substantial endowment. He has also served or chaired numerous study sections and special emphasis panels within the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Falk continues to receive funding in a P01 Program Project Grant\, “ANCA Glomerulonephritis: From Molecules to Man\,” UM1\, “GDCN Clinical Center—Advancing Clinical Research in Primary Glomerular Diseases\,” and a T32 Renal Epidemiology Training Grant.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hwang is an endocrinologist as well as an Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 2001 with a major in molecular biology followed by Harvard Medical School in 2006. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston\, MA\, and also served as a Chief Medical Resident. Dr. Hwang received her fellowship training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Massachusetts General Hospital\, graduating in 2012. Between 2012-2022\, she was an Instructor and then Assistant Professor in Endocrinology at Yale School of Medicine before joining the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2022. \n  \nDr. Hwang’s academic interests are at the intersection of metabolism\, neuroscience and neuroimaging. In particular\, her work has focused on understanding the effects of diabetes and obesity on brain energy metabolism. She leads a highly collaborative research group specializing in mechanistic\, physiology-based human studies as well as in vivo rodent models using novel neuroimaging modalities (including functional magnetic resonance imaging\, 1H and 13C magnetic resonance spectroscopy\, PET) coupled with classic metabolic techniques. Since 2017\, she has been the principal investigator on several research awards including an American Diabetes Association Innovative Clinical and Translational Science Award\, and several R-level awards (awarded in 2019\, 2020\, 2021)

She recently was elected senior councilor on the executive committee of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and will serve as AASLD president in 2023.  \n\n\nIn addition to HBV\, HCV\, and NASH\, Dr. Terrault’s research interests include fatty liver\, cirrhosis\, and liver transplantation. Dr. Albert is a graduate of Haverford College\, the University of Rochester School of Medicine\, and Harvard School of Public Health. She completed Internal Medicine Residency and served as Chief Medical Resident at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. Dr. Albert then completed a Cardiovascular Clinical and Research Fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School\, where she rose in the ranks to an Associate Professor in Medicine. She was previously the Vivian Beaumont Allen Endowed Professor/Chair and Chief of Cardiology at Howard University. \nDr. Albert’s clinical expertise involves both taking care of the most critically ill heart disease patients and preventive cardiology at UCSF. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Cohen is one of the world’s leading experts on the intersection of bioethics (sometimes also called “medical ethics”) and the law\, as well as health law. He also teaches civil procedure. He has advised the U.S. Vice President on reproductive rights\, discussed medical AI policy with members of the Korean Congress\, and lectured to legal\, medical\, and industry conferences around the world. He also provides expert testimony in health law and bioethics litigation. \nCohen was selected as a Radcliffe Institute Fellow for the 2012-2013 year and by the Greenwall Foundation to receive a Faculty Scholar Award in Bioethics. Nasca\, MD\, MACP is president and chief executive officer of the ACGME; Professor of Medicine\, Jefferson Medical College; and senior scholar in the Department of Medical Education\, University of Illinois at Chicago School of Medicine.\nDr. Nasca graduated from the University of Notre Dame with High Honors and is an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Jefferson Medical College. Prior to joining the ACGME\, Dr. Nasca served as senior vice president for Academic Affairs at Thomas Jefferson University\, and as the Anthony and Gertrude DePalma Dean of Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Nasca left the deanship at Jefferson to assume the leadership of the ACGME in December 2007. In May 2009\, Dr. Nasca became the founding president of ACGME-International.\nDr. Nasca is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology. He has been a member and leader of a number of organizations with a mission of advancing excellence in medical education. Dr. Nasca was a member of the Council on Graduate Medical Education of the Department of Health and Human Services and the US Congress. He is a Co-Chair of the Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience of the National Academy of Medicine.\nDr. Nasca was elected a Master of the American College of Physicians in 2006\, received the Dema C. Daley Founders Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine Education from APDIM\, the Rev. Clarence Shaffrey Award from St. Joseph’s University\, the John C. Leonard Award from the Association of Hospital Medical Education\, the Jefferson Medical College Alumni Achievement Award\, the Founders Award from the Dr. Thomas Dooley Society of the University of Notre Dame\, the Weinberger Award for Leadership from the American College of Physicians\, the Miller Award from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine\, and the Federation of State Medical Licensing Board’s Distinguished Service Award. He was named one of the 50 Most Powerful/Influential Physician Executives in 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, 2012\, and 2013 by Modern Healthcare. He is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed articles\, chapters\, and other publications\, and has delivered more than 500 invited lectures on topics related to medical education to national and international audiences.
