SUMMARY:DOM Grand Rounds- Dr. Josh Berkowitz & Dr. Stephan Moll presents: "Athletes and Venous Thromboembolism"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Josh Berkowitz is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedics\, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Nonoperative Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine. He serves as a Team Physician for the Tar Heels\, with primary responsibilities for Football\, Women’s Basketball\, Men’s Lacrosse and Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving while providing point-of-care ultrasound diagnostics and procedural intervention to student-athletes from all 28 athletics programs. In addition to covering dozens of NCAA competitions annually\, Dr. Berkowitz serves as Team Physician for Chapel Hill High School\, two local professional ultimate teams\, and as an Event Physician for the National Basketball Association\, providing event coverage locally\, nationally and internationally including NCAA Championships\, NBA All-Star and Basketball without Borders. In addition to anticoagulation in athletes\, Dr. Berkowitz’s professional interests include patient care\, event coverage\, and advancing minimally-invasive management of musculoskeletal conditions. \n  \n  \n \nDr. Stephan Moll received his medical degree from Freiburg University\, Germany\, including a one year of clinical training in London (Hammersmith Hospital and Institute of Neurology at Queens Square)\, and performed a pathology residency at the Institute of Pathology\, University of Aachen\, Germany. He completed a residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine and a Hematology-Oncology at Duke\, and a one-year Clinical Coagulation fellowship at UNC; he then worked as a coagulationist in the cardiology division of Humboldt University in Berlin\, Germany. He has been at UNC as a faculty member in the Department of Medicine and the Division of Hematology since 1999. \n  \nHis clinical focus is coagulation\, particularly thrombosis\, thrombophilia and anticoagulation\, and his research interests include clinical trials on new anticoagulants and better use of established anticoagulants. He takes a special interest in clinical-medical education of healthcare professionals\, patients and the public. His three main professional goals for the next 5 years are to (1) enhance national and local patient and health care provider education activities on venous thromboembolism\, (2) continue to build the UNC “Athletes and Blood Clot Program”\, (3) support trainees in their career development in the field of coagulation/non-malignant hematology. \n
