With Astrazeneca putting its vaccine trials on hold, Cindy Gay, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases and principal investigator of UNC’s COVID-19 Moderna Trial, told WRAL there are measures in place and levels of safety oversight that begin at the individual participant level and extend to a broader review of data and assessments. She added that these measures should be reassuring and that an independent review will determine if the person who had an event was affected by the vaccine.

Gay also talked about the tremendous amount of interest that the UNC study has received, from people who are expressing how much they want to help do their part to help solve the problem.
