Overview<\/h3>\n

UNC offers a one-year fellowship in advanced endoscopic tissue resection and third-space endoscopy. This advanced endoscopic training program is primarily clinical and intended to prepare graduating fellows to manage a variety of complex endoluminal lesions, including advanced polyps, early cancers, and subepithelial lesions throughout the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, our program offers training in the endoscopic management of achalasia, Zenker\u2019s diverticulum, and gastroparesis.<\/p>\n

This unique training pathway provides 1:1 teaching and mentorship by two faculty members, Drs. Ian Grimm<\/a> and Dan Kroch<\/a>, who have extensive expertise in cutting-edge endoscopic resection and third-space endoscopy techniques.<\/p>\n

Fellows will develop expert skills in endoscopic lesion assessment, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR) and peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) through hands-on training.<\/p>\n

Graduating fellows can expect to perform approximately 300 complex EMRs, 75 ESDs, 10 EFTRs, 50 esophageal POEMs, 15 Zenker\u2019s POEMs and 15 gastric POEMs.<\/p>\n

Fellows will gain experience in the pre- and post-procedural evaluation and management of patients with complex endoluminal lesions, achalasia, Zenker\u2019s divertulum and gastroparesis through one half-day of advanced resection\/third-space endoscopy clinic per week.\u00a0 In addition, fellows will perform weekly general endoscopy with opportunities to perform EMR independently in these slots in the second half of this training year. This fellowship is focused on learning to care for outpatients and as such, there are no inpatient consult or call responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Requirements<\/h3>\n

Requirements for eligibility include completion of a 3-year general GI fellowship and board eligibility in gastroenterology and hepatology. Prospective applicants must have excellent general endoscopy skills. Gastroenterologists who have completed a traditional advanced endoscopy fellowship focused on pancreaticobiliary endoscopy are welcome to apply.<\/p>\n
