A variety of clinical rotations are available to expose trainees to full breadth of the oncology and hematology specialties. These include Inpatient Medical Oncology, Inpatient Malignant Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplantation, and the Classical Hematology Consult Service.<\/p>\n<p>In the oncology clinic month, the fellow rotates through a variety of clinics that deal with oncologic diseases, including multidisciplinary clinics in <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\/thoracic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thoracic oncology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\/breastcenter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">breast oncology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\/neuro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neuro-oncology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\/skincancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">melanoma<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\/gi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gastrointestinal oncology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\/urologic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">genitourinary oncology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/unclineberger.org\/headandneck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">head and neck oncology<\/a>, malignant hematology, and bone marrow transplantation.<\/p>\n<p>Our classical hematology clinic month includes attendance at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hemophilia and other bleeding disorders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/hemonc\/patient-care\/clinical-services\/sickle-cell-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sickle cell disease<\/a> and hemoglobinopathies, Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Clinic, thrombosis clinic, and bleeding evaluation clinic.<\/p>\n<p>The first year fellow will have one half day of continuity clinic in breast and GI oncology, switching every 6 months.<\/p>\n<h3>Second Year and Beyond<\/h3>\n<p>In the second year, fellows embark on a personalized training plan.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical expectations during this year will vary depending on the intended board certification requirements and ultimate career plan.<\/p>\n<p>The second year fellow will have two half days of continuity clinic in thoracic and GU oncology, and malignant and benign hematology, switching every six months. In the third year, fellows maintain one half day of continuity clinic in an area of their own designation.<\/p>\n<h3>Elective Rotations<\/h3>\n<p>Elective rotations include gynecologic oncology, radiation oncology, palliative care, transfusion medicine, hematopathology, cancer genetics, and others.\u00a0 There is an opportunity to rotate through the Oncology Clinics at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi&#8217;s capital, Lilongwe as part of the <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/infdis\/malawi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNC-Project Malawi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of clinical experiences take place in the newly opened state-of-the-art <a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/about\/nccancerhospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NC Cancer Hospital<\/a>. The NC Cancer Hospital is nationally ranked and is a 315,000 square foot facility which houses inpatients, outpatient adult and pediatric oncology clinics, chemotherapy infusion, radiation oncology, radiology, pharmacy, supportive care, and conference facilities with telemedicine capacity under one roof.
