About

Adaora A. Adimora, MD, MPH, FIDSA, is a Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and professor of epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. She is a physician epidemiologist with more than 25 years of clinical experience in the treatment of patients with HIV disease. She has dedicated her career to investigating the epidemiology of HIV and STIs. Her work has helped characterize the epidemiology of heterosexual HIV transmission among African Americans, highlighted the role of sexual network patterns in the spread of HIV, and underscored the importance of macroeconomic and social forces in racial disparities in the US HIV epidemic. She chairs the NIH HIV Prevention Trials Network’s Women at Risk Committee, previously served on the NIAID Council, and was recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Adimora serves as Principal Investigator of the UNC site of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study-Women’s Interagency HIV Study Combined Cohort Study (MACS/WIHS CCS), the largest and longest-running cohort of person’s with – and at risk for– HIV. She was former Chair of HIVMA and has served on the NIAID Advisory Council, the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, the DHHS Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel, and the International AIDS Society’s Governing Council. She is the prior recipient of a K24 training grant, focused on increasing the pool of researchers, especially African American investigators; and served as the PI and led the UNC Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program from its inception in 1998 until the program’s end in 2014. She serves as Co-Director of the UNC Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and PI ,and Director, of UNC’s T32 Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV Training Program.
