Varun is an undergraduate currently pursuing a Biochemistry major, with a minor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. His primary research interest is in infectious disease, specifically with antimicrobial drug resistance among pathogens. At IDEEL, he has been working under Dr. Jessica Lin to optimize and run speciation qPCR as well as nested PCR on clinical samples to identify whether different subspecies of malaria are present.

Apart from IDEEL, Varun is involved with many other activities, such as Vice President of UNC’s HOSA chapter. He is also an Adult Advisor to a youth leadership council dedicated to providing leadership and service opportunities to middle and high schoolers located in Morrisville, NC. Additionally, Varun is a member of and a peer mentor for the Chancellor’s Science Scholars program, a scholarship program dedicated to students interested in STEM research.
