Although the current requirements for Board Certification entail one year of clinical training and one year of research training, this is not sufficient research experience to launch a successful sustained career in academia, public health or industry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53621\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 519px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-53621 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2021\/07\/20210707_115633-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Eron Presenting to ID Fellows on long-term HIV Infections\" width=\"509\" height=\"287\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Dr. Eron presenting to ID Fellows during 2021 ID Fellowship Bootcamp on ART and HIV Drug Resistance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At UNC, fellows choose a career pathway best suited to their long-range goals and work directly with one or more faculty mentors. Our list of mentors is not limited to ID clinical faculty. In addition, courses in grant writing and career development given by the UNC School of Medicine are available for trainees.<\/p>\n<p>Possible pathways include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Translational and Basic Research Pathogenesis of Infectious Diseases<\/b>: Trainees choose a research mentor within the ID division or its extended faculty and work under his\/her direction to receive training in basic scientific research. The available labs focus on a diverse number of agents including bacteria, viruses, parasites and immunology. Recent trainees have worked in the laboratories of\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/jonathan-juliano\/\">Jonathan Juliano<\/a> (malaria and trypanosomiasis), <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/news.unchealthcare.org\/news\/2015\/may\/carolina-gsk-announce-novel-partnership-to-accelerate-search-for-hiv-cure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Margolis<\/a> and <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/swanstrom.web.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Swanstrom<\/a> (HIV), <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/people\/jenny-p.-ting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jenny Ting<\/a> (innate immunology), <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/genetics\/directory\/mark-heise-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Heise<\/a> (SARS vaccine), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/microimm\/directory\/ralph-baric-phd-1\/\">Ralph Baric<\/a> (SARS-CoV-2).<\/li>\n<li><b>Epidemiology and public health<\/b>: Many fellows wish to pursue a career in public health. UNC has the highest-rated publicly funded school of public health in the United States and offers an MPH in several disciplines, including <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/epid\/epidemiology-landing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">epidemiology<\/a>. The MPH degree may be obtained with two years of course work and a thesis, but it must not interfere with the continuity clinic. Fellows who choose this path can also receive training in <b>hospital epidemiology<\/b> and may choose to become board-eligible in <b>preventive medicine<\/b>. Recent fellows have worked with <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/profiles\/audrey-pettifor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audrey Pettifor<\/a> on behavioral interventions in South Africa, <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/profiles\/carol-golin-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carol Golin<\/a> on HIV secondary prevention and adherence, <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/arlene-sena-soberano-md-mph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arlene Sena<\/a> on domestic STIs, and <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/ada-adimora\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ada Adimora<\/a> on sexual network patterns and HIV transmission.<\/li>\n<li><b>Clinical research<\/b>: UNC faculty and trainees are involved in both domestic and international clinical research. Trainees may want to complete a <b><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/sph.unc.edu\/programs\/?ppk=epid-mscr-r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Masters of Science in Clinical Research<\/a><\/b><b>, <\/b> geared to health professionals committed to clinical research and clinical trials. Recent fellows have worked with <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/becky-white\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Becky White<\/a>, <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/joseph-eron-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joseph Eron<\/a>, and <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/david-wohl-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Wohl<\/a> on HIV clinical drug trials, acute HIV infection, and studies on the role of prisoners in transmission.<\/li>\n<li><b>Clinical microbiology<\/b>: <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pathology\/residency\/fellowships\/clinical-microbiology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The microbiology laboratory at UNC Hospitals<\/a> is one of only 15 accredited to provide formal training in Medical and Public Health Laboratory Microbiology for certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology. <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pathology\/residency\/fellowships\/clinical-immunology-fellowship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The immunology laboratory at UNC Hospitals<\/a> is one of only two programs in the United States accredited by the American Academy of Microbiology to provide training for certification by the American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology.
