Dr. Donohue’s research interests include new therapeutics in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiencies, and asthma. He has previously served on the editorial advisory boards of numerous journals including COPD: Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Medscape Pulmonary Medicine, and Current Respiratory Medical Review, and is an ad hoc reviewer for many journals, including Mayo Clinical Proceedings, Thorax and New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Donohue has authored more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as CHEST, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Respiratory Research Drugs, and Primary Care Respiratory Journal. Since 2004, he has served on the Faculty of 1000 Medicine and Respiratory Disorders Evaluation Board. Dr. Donohue has presented to the FDA Pulmonary and Allergy Advisory Committee and is a respected expert in clinical trials who also has participated on Drug Safety Monitoring Boards. From 2010 to 2016, he was the Chairman of the Foundation of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) as well as serving on the Board of Directors. Dr. Donohue chaired the GlaxoSmithKline Pulmonary Fellowships Award Selection Committee for 15 years until 2006, when the program was turned over to the ATS.
In 2018, Dr. Donohue received the highest award of the ATS Foundation, “The Breathing for Life.” In 2019, he was named by Expertscape to the Top 10 experts in the United States in COPD and number 1 in North Carolina. In 2012, Dr. Donohue received the Presidential Commendation “for raising research funding for young investigators to record levels” from the ATS, a Lifetime Contribution Awards from the American Lung Association of North Carolina, and has been included in both “America’s top Doctors” (Castle Connolly Medical) and “Best Doctors in America” (Woodward White), since its inception.
