M. Bradley Drummond, MD, MHS, will serve as the new Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine, effective September 1, 2026.
Dr. Drummond is currently a Professor of Medicine, Vice Chief of Outpatient Services, Medical Co-Director of the Pulmonary Specialty Clinics, and Director of the Obstructive Lung Diseases Clinical and Translational Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine.
Throughout his tenure, he has displayed outstanding dedication to our academic missions. Dr. Drummond was recruited to the UNC pulmonary division in 2016 to develop and lead the COPD and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency clinical and research programs.
As a clinical-translational scientist, Dr. Drummond’s research focuses on mechanisms of disease development in individuals at risk for or living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). His work has examined the role of downstream vitamin D targets in lung health and the association between the nasal microbiome and adverse COPD outcomes.
At the epidemiologic level, he has led studies of risk factors for chronic lung disease among people with HIV and currently serves as co-PI for the UNC site of a multisite NIH HIV cohort study, while also leading an NIH-funded study of the nasal microbiome in people with HIV. As Director of the Obstructive Lung Diseases Center at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he serves as site PI for multiple pharmacologic and observational studies in COPD and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
