Scott Commins, MD, PhD, and Onyinye Iweala, MD, PhD, from the division of rheumatology, allergy and immunology discuss the tick-borne meat allergy in a new article. Commins says increased awareness is critical to helping patients, broadening research and discovering treatments.

Scott Commins, MD, PhD, was the lead author on a seminal scientific paper first describing the unique meat allergy Alpha Gal. Iweala is a physician-scientist working with Commins to unravel the mysteries of Alpha Gal, using innovative approaches to better understand the allergy, that can hopefully lead to the development of an immunotherapy treatment. Both were recently interviewed by Moises Velasquez-Manoff for a New York Times magazine article. The article can be accessed here.
