The\u202fUniversity of North Carolina (UNC)\u202fInterstitial Lung Disease Center is\u202fdedicated to helping\u202f\u200bpatients\u202fwith Interstitial Lung Disease.<\/p>\n
Our mission is:<\/p>\n

- To provide state of the art\u202fdiagnostic testing, therapies, and care for patients with interstitial lung disease<\/li>\n
- To provide guidance to patients and to providers regarding the management of interstitial lung disease<\/li>\n
- To improve the\u202f\u200bdiagnostic process and treatment options\u202ffor interstitial lung diseases through research and\u202f\u200bclinical trials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
What Will Happen During Your Visit<\/h2>\n
The initial consultation process at the UNC ILD Clinic typically is as follows:<\/p>\n
- \n
- Arrive at clinic at scheduled appointment time<\/li>\n
- Meet with clinic nurse for weight and vital signs<\/li>\n
- Meet briefly with the clinical coordinator to be informed about participation in an ILD clinical research database<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
- \n
- Perform pulmonary function testing including a 6 minute walk<\/li>\n
- Perform advanced lung disease imaging if not already done<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
- \n
- Consultation appointment with an ILD\u202f\u200bspecialist\u202f(typically 60 minutes in length)<\/li>\n
- Check out with clinic nurse\/complete lab testing<\/li>\n
- The ILD team\u202fmeet\u200bs\u202fas a group\u202fto\u202freview your\u202f\u200bhistory,\u202fradiology,\u202flab work\u202fand pathology<\/li>\n
- Your ILD doctor finalizes his\/her opinion after reviewing all your materials<\/li>\n
- A comprehensive letter describing your doctor\u2019s findings as well as the most appropriate treatment approach for your situation is sent to your referring provider<\/li>\n
- Your ILD doctor may also recommend\u202ffurther\u202f\u200bdiagnostic testing if your diagnosis unclear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Lung Transplantation Evaluation<\/h2>\n
Depending upon the stage of your lung disease, lung transplantation may be an appropriate part of your management.\u202f When you visit with your doctor, you can discuss this.\u202f The UNC Interstitial Lung Disease Center works closely with the UNC Lung Transplant Team,\u202f\u200bthe first lung transplant center in the state.<\/p>\n

LAM and Rare Lung Disease Clinic<\/h2>\n
The LAM Foundation<\/a> aims to improve the care and treatment for all women with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). LAM Clinics are strategically located in hospitals or medical centers across the United States where there are clinicians and researchers who have an interest in LAM and who value research in rare diseases. UNC is a LAM Foundation approved LAM Clinic and is the first site approved in North Carolina or Virginia. Our team is also interested in improving the care and treatment of patients with other rare lung diseases. Rare lung conditions of interest include Pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis, Sarcoidosis, Sjogren\u2019s Syndrome, and Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency among others.<\/p>\n
Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care Center Network<\/h2>\n
The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care Center Network<\/a> is a series of clinics with expertise in diagnosing and managing patients with pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease with a high level of understanding as well as the support services patients needs to improve the quality of their lives. UNC is a PFF CCN approved clinic as of 2022.<\/p>\n
