New for the 2026 application season, pulmonary and critical care fellowships are utilizing signaling. Due to a high volume of applications, we are highly unlikely to extend interview offers to applicants who do not signal our program.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Five positions are available each year in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program on a competitive basis. You must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Program (ERAS) around July 1st of each year. To apply to the program, visit the\u202fERAS Web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for a fellowship position in our program:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Graduates of medical schools within the United States must have at least three years of internship & residency training in the United States.<\/li>\n
  2. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada must have completed three years of internship\/residency training in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Eligible applications will be considered based on their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. UNC Hospitals will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, national origin, disability or veteran status.<\/p>\n

    In order to be considered, applicants will be required to submit the following:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. ERAS fellowship application<\/li>\n
    2. Three letters of recommendation \u2013 one of them must be written by the program director of the residency program in which you most recently served<\/li>\n
    3. An official medical school transcript from the Registrar of the School of Medicine.<\/li>\n
    4. Current curriculum vitae<\/li>\n
    5. Upon receiving the applications through ERAS, applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to interview virtually for an in-depth program overview and meetings with our Fellows and Faculty. Visits are scheduled between August and October of each year. Invitations, confirmation of your interview and other correspondence will be sent via email. Each year over 500 applications are received, and 70 candidates are invited for interviews.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Appointments are made exclusively through the National Residency Matching Program. All candidates must register through Specialties Matching Service (SMS). To register go to:\u202fNational Resident Matching Program\u2019s Specialty Matching Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n

      Policy regarding Visas<\/h2>\n

      H1-B visas are not sponsored at University of NC Hospitals. University of NC Hospitals will consider residents who have been issued a J-1 Visa and who hold a current ECFMG certificate.<\/p>\n
