In an interview with UK-based newspaper the “Independent,”  Saira Sheikh, MD, director of the UNC Rheumatology Lupus Clinic and assistant professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology, allergy and immunology, provided clarity regarding chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine.

The two medications have been in the news recently, following coverage related to Coronovirus. The result has been a surge in demand for the drugs and shortages for lupus patients who need them.

“There is no evidence yet to suggest that hydroxychloroquine or anti-malarials are protective or prevent against Covid-19 infections, so people who are not already taking this medication do not need to start on it now,” she added. “Emerging reports for its use are only in patients for treatment of Covid-19 infections, in addition to other therapeutic modalities.”
