Jeremy Owens, MD, MS
First Year Allergy/Immunology Fellow
About
I am mainly a Virginian, having grown up in Virginia Beach, and having gone to UVA for both undergrad and graduate school, where I first trained to be a secondary science education teacher. I worked as a HS chemistry teacher for 9 years, first in Charlottesville, VA, then in Fairfax County, VA. I decided to transition to medicine after shadowing one of my student’s fathers who was my daughter’s pediatrician, and really fell in love with pediatrics. I then moved back home to southeastern Virginia where I went to Eastern Virginia Medical School for both medical school as well as my pediatrics residency.
Why Allergy and Immunology
I fell in love with A&I during my last year of medical school after randomly scheduling my A&I elective. I knew very little about it prior to that, then every patient I encountered relating to asthma, food allergies, and, though more rarely, immunodeficiency, made me come alive.
Why UNC
The growing faculty here exude excellence, which is very attractive. We have so many research focuses here, which really creates an environment where regardless of your interests coming in, you will have ample opportunities. I love the area, having come here a few times while my brother lived in Chapel Hill. Its very charming, diverse, but has a wide range of activities, particularly for my three kids to do. We love to hike around Jordan lake, bike along the massive trail network, and explore the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, a must do for families with kids.
