Jessica MacDougall, MD
Second Year Allergy/Immunology Fellow
About
I would consider myself a forever Tarheel having spent the majority of my life living in NC and essentially my entire “adult” life training at UNC to become a physician. My parents and brother live in the Winston-Salem area and I love that I am just an hour visit away. I have wanted to be a pediatrician for as long as I can remember and it was quite the journey to get here.
Why Allergy/Immunology
I initially went to medical school with the plan to be a pediatrician and even joined the UNC Primary Care Pediatrics residency for my next step in training; however, it was in my third year of medical school that I met Dr. Edwin Kim (our beloved program director and division chief) and ultimately did a rotation my 4th year. It was one of the best electives of medical school and couldn’t believe that I enjoyed seeing adults as much as I did. In residency, I noticed that I would gravitate towards my pediatric patients with atopic dermatitis, food allergy, or asthma and I am sure that my co-residents became exhausted with all of my morning reports that were all about Allergy/Immunology. That and the constant support of the Allergy faculty here made my decision easy.
Why UNC
Following medical school and residency at UNC (which were amazing experiences), I never imagined that I would continue my training here for fellowship because who stays this long in one place; however, I could not say no to making UNC my #1 choice (for the second time). Several faculty members had taken me under their wing from the time I was in medical school providing me support and opportunities whether in research or clinical experience. I was treated as though I was already a colleague and felt valued by each one of them. The collaborative and friendly environment has made learning easy.
