Ronald J. Falk, MD, FASN, chair of the department of medicine, has received the distinguished John P. Peters Award from the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). The award was presented November 4, 2017 during ASN’s Kidney Week Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Established in 2012, the ASN Foundation for Kidney Research, enables funding that directly supports research efforts to prevent and cure kidney diseases. The Kidney Health Initiative is a public-private partnership with the US Food and Drug Administration, focused on advancing scientific understanding of kidney health and patient safety implications for medical products. This initiative has fostered the development of kidney therapies for diseases, in a collaborative environment, allowing the FDA and nephrology community to work together in evaluating drugs, devices, biologics, and food products.
The John P. Peters Award is an annual recognition named for one of the fathers of the discipline of nephrology. It recognizes individuals who have made substantial research contributions to the discipline of nephrology, with sustained achievements in one or more domains of academic medicine, including clinical care, education and leadership.
