Cindy Feltner, MD, MPH, assistant professor in the division of general medicine and clinical epidemiology and associate director of the RTI-UNC Evidenced-based Practice Center, led a review for the US Preventive Services Task Force to update the evidence for screening for hearing loss in adults 50 years or older.  The review was published in JAMA, along with the task force recommendation statement and commentaries.

The review determine several screening tests can adequately detect hearing loss in older adults and there are no studies reported on the harms of screening or treatment. Evidence shows there is benefit from hearing aids on hearing-related function among adults with screen-detected or newly-detected hearing loss is limited to studies enrolling veterans.

Other UNC reviewers included Christine E. Kistler, MD, MASc, associate professor in the division of geriatric medicine, and Daniel E. Jonas, MD, MPH, associate professor in the division of general medicine and clinical epidemiology.
