A research forum encouraged collaborations among research faculty in the Department of Medicine. Research faculty from across the Department of Medicine came together last week to exchange ideas and connect with each other. The forum was designed to encourage collaborations among departmental research faculty. Faculty were also asked to recognize the ideal components of a research-rich environment.
“Thank you for what you do–we have so much to offer, but so much to learn from you,” said Dr. Ron Falk, Chair of the UNC Department of Medicine in his welcome address at Meadowmont’s Rizzo Center.
Joanne Jordan, MD, MPH, Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, led a presentation about faculty appointments, promotions and tenure. This was followed by a session that introduced faculty to each other, led by Victor Garcia-Martinez, PhD, from the Division of Infectious Diseases, and Susan Hogan, PhD, MPH, from the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. Participants learned not only about the scientific talent in the room, but also about many wonderful interests explored off campus, including therapy dog training and craft brewing.
In a breakout session led by Leigh Callahan, PhD, Associate Director of the UNC Thurston Arthritis Research Center, small groups explored ways in which the Department of Medicine might enhance support to research faculty.Common themes included providing forums for interaction, guidance through the promotion process, and facilitating access to departmental and university resources. Feedback from the conference will be used to further improve the faculty research experience and basic science collaborations that are vital to advancing the frontiers of medicine.
