SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Richard Loeser\, MD - "Osteoarthritis: Are We Any Closer to Disease Modification?"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard F. Loeser is the Herman and Louise Smith Distinguished Professor in the Division of Rheumatology\, Allergy and Immunology and the Director of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Dr. Loeser received his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine\, Rheumatology\, and Geriatrics at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Dr. Loeser’s lab uses a combination of in vitro experiments using human joint tissue cells and in vivo experiments in rodent models to study cell signaling pathways that regulate anabolic and catabolic activity responsible for joint tissue remodeling and destruction. The lab is particularly interested in determining how reactive oxygen species regulate chondrocyte signaling and how oxidative stress that occurs with aging and joint injury can alter the activity of these signaling pathways. Most recently he has also been examining the contribution of the gut microbiota to the development of osteoarthritis in humans and mouse models. He has worked in the area of clinical trials of exercise and weight loss interventions for adults with osteoarthritis of the knee including studies of biomarkers analysis samples from these studies. Dr. Loeser has published over 160 research articles\, reviews\, chapters and editorials on osteoarthritis and serves as co-editor of the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology. He has received the Osteoarthritis Research Society International Award for Basic Research in Osteoarthritis and a MERIT award from the NIH for his research project “Integrin Function in Cartilage”.

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds - Philip Mackowiak\, MD\, MBA\, University of Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Philip Mackowiak is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and the Carolyn Frenkil and Selvin Passen History of Medicine Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Maryland School of Medicine\, and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Maryland\, College Park. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and a former governor of the Maryland chapter of the ACP. \nIn the two centuries since Mozart’s death\, many theories have been offered to explain his final illness. None has settled the controversy\, in no small part because of limitations of his medical record. In this presentation\, Dr. Mackowiak will review Mozart’s medical history with particular attention to what we know of the character of his final illness\, and offer what he believes is the disorder that most likely took him from us just prior to his 36th birthday. \n

SUMMARY:Medicine Grand Rounds\, Ron Falk "What Brings You Joy in Academic Medicine?"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Falk\, chair of the department of medicine\, has now interviewed nearly every department faculty member\, asking three questions: \n1. What brings you joy when you come to work? \n2. What are the everyday hassles? \n3. What can the department do for you?  \nIn this first Grand Rounds lecture of the year\, Dr. Falk will reflect on this process and emphasize the need to be intentional about cultivating joy in academic medicine. He will also recognize the role that an institution must play\, providing the scaffolding to ensure that the practice environment is efficient\, the culture is nurturing and that all can continue to find meaning in their work. \n
