Over 20% of US medical students applying into Internal Medicine and over 50% of students who applied to UNC sent our program a gold or silver signal in last year’s cycle. Over 12% of US medical students applying to our program sent UNC a Gold signal. 70% of students who sent our program a gold signal and 38% of students who sent our program a silver signal were invited to interview last year—these numbers of course may change this year.

Based upon last year’s data, it is highly unlikely that an applicant will receive an interview unless they have signaled our program (Gold or Silver). It is also unlikely that a student who sends our program a silver signal but does geographically preferences another area will be invited (NO geographic preference is ABSOLUTELY FINE).

And although we preferentially review students who have signaled our program, we still holistically evaluate applications and look for students who are in the top of their class, have leadership, research, and service activities, have life experiences that contribute to their resilience, and have demonstrated an interest in work that aligns with UNC (a focus on caring for the underserved, an interest in Global Health, connections to North Carolina or a dedication to caring for the people of our state, experiences in Public Health, a desire to work in a proud, public university coupled with demonstration of humble excellence that is the hallmark of the UNC resident). A signal does NOT guarantee an interview.

Interview Day:

The Interview Day will include an interview with a core faculty member, one of our Chief Residents, and a one-on-one meeting with the Program Director. Given our goal to make this a high-quality experience for each applicant, interview slots are limited.

Fewer interview invitations means that we will lose out on meeting many outstanding applicants, but we hope that this process is fair and transparent and offers the best experience we can in a virtual format.

Early Locking of the rank list and second looks: We will be participating in the NRMP voluntary “early lock” of our rank lists this year. The exact date in February for this is still pending but we will keep applicants updated and will have our second look dates solidified by the time of interviews.

To summarize:

We do not send out interview invitations before we have the MSPE.

We will let all applicants know whether they are invited to interview.

Invitations for categorical interviews will be sent out beginning in early to mid-October.

Categorical applicants who are not invited to interview will be informed by the first week of November.

If you are invited to interview, we have a spot for you!

We do not use USMLE scores to stratify applicants and do a holistic review.

We will preferentially interview students who have signaled our program.

We will NOT use signals to rank applicants (but our experience demonstrates that students who have sent our program a gold signal are more likely to highly rank and match at our program).

We will participate in the NRMP “early lock” of rank list pilot program and will offer second look visits after that date.

We aim to be transparent and fair – especially as programs and students learn how to best use signals to navigate the season!
