Andrew Greganti, MD, the Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Distinguished Professor, and vice chair of the department of medicine has retired following more than 40 years of distinguished service as faculty at the UNC School of Medicine.<\/p>\n
Greganti was universally loved and respected by fellow physicians, patients, internal medicine residents,\u00a0and hospital staff.\u00a0He is well known as the \u201cphysician\u2019s physician,\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0he received countless accolades for his dedication to excellence in patient care and teaching,\u00a0including\u00a0the\u00a0prestigious\u00a0H. Fleming Fuller Award.<\/p>\n
\u201cDr. Greganti is a lifelong student, the consummate clinician and a faithful friend,” said Dr. Ron Falk, chair of the department of medicine. “He earned the most valued trust among all of us in need of care for ourselves and our family members. He will best be remembered by his patients as a caring physician who listened and responded with compassion.<\/p>\n
Greganti focused on geriatric medicine, treating elderly patients with complex conditions. As a passionate medical educator, he was devoted to the development of novel teaching techniques and delighted in the teaching of medical students, interns, residents and faculty, in classrooms and lecture halls.\u00a0He was a constant presence over many years at resident morning report and readily contributed his humor and insights. \u00a0Greganti also\u00a0introduced and\u00a0welcomed many guest speakers to the\u00a0Medicine\u00a0Grand Rounds podium.\u00a0In\u00a0his own final lecture this year, he\u00a0gave an excellent presentation which\u00a0paid homage to the memory of Dr. Stuart O. Bondurant, emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning.<\/p>\n
Over the course of his\u00a0distinguished and extensive\u00a0career at UNC, Greganti served in a number of leadership roles, serving as vice chair of the department of medicine, since 2000, and twice stepping in to serve as interim chair of the department.\u00a0Greganti also served as a member of the UNC Health Care Board of Directors for more than 20 years. When UNC Health Care was created in 1998, Greganti was the first physician appointed to serve on the board.<\/p>\n
We would like to thank Dr. Greganti for all of his contributions to the department of medicine and wish him a well-deserved retirement.<\/p>\n
