Shaheen is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine &#038; Clinical Epidemiology.<\/p>\n<div class='image-section'>\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/amy-shaheen-image2.jpeg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" alt=\"image2\"><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Amy Shaheen, MD<br \/>\n    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em><strong>What is your clinical expertise?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>General Internal medicine, and quality improvement in the care of people with acute and chronic illness<\/p>\n<p><em><strong\/><\/em><em style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><strong>Tell us about your current role in the Department of Medicine.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\">\n<ul>\n<li><span color=\"#262626\" face=\"Calibri,sans-serif\" size=\"3\">Codirector of the Community Based longitudinal Care Course in the medical school. This is a 16 week course with 45 students each time that places students in primary care practices. I help design curriculum around primary care, quality and safety, and end of life issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">Primary investigator for the Better Back Program. This is a community based quality improvement initiative sponsored by CMS that aims to improve care of patients with acute back pain.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">Clinician in the general medicine clinic.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">Work as Subject matter expert developing tools to improve the care of patients with COPD in the system.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">Work with the practices all over the state where we have students on student led quality improvement initiatives.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">Teach in the Patient Centered Care Course.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><em><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">What current project or initiative at UNC are you involved in that you are excited about?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">I am excited about the new Clinical integrated network. It is a chance to share what we have learned in our own practice with practices all over the state and for them to share with us how to best take care of patients in a patient centered, cost-effective way.<\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><em><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><br \/><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><em><strong>What do you love most about Chapel Hill\/UNC?  <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">My co-workers. From the nurses to the doctors to the administrative staff, we all believe people coming to UNC should get the best we can offer. While we are a quirky bunch, I feel like it is family. We take care of each other as we care for the patients.  <\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><em><strong>How do you like to spend your free time?<\/strong> <\/em> <\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.43em; \">Any sport, any time. Preferably with my family. I love to play and watch. I am a rabid UNC basketball fan and am physically ill if UNC loses to Duke. (So keep the trash talk to yourselves if you cheer for Duke).
