Peadar G. Noone<\/a>, MD, professor of medicine in the division of pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine, and Kurt Gilliland<\/a>, PhD, associate professor in the department of cell biology and physiology, have introduced a new course that will allow medical students to do a two-week elective course in animal medicine during their medical school curriculum.\u00a0 With the collaboration of Dr. Laura Nelson and colleagues at the College of Veterinary Medicine<\/a>\u00a0in Raleigh,\u00a0the two-week elective course will provide the opportunity for UNC School of Medicine students to experience animal medicine from many aspects.\u00a0 It will provide the opportunity to interact with veterinary practitioners of many disciplines, as well as veterinary students.\u00a0 Included clinical exposures will be in animal surgery, emergency, medicine, and anesthesia, \u00a0radiology, procedures and public health.\u00a0 Students will also be able to compare the skills they have learnt in medical school to the skills of a Vet including\u00a0communication skills with owners\/clients,\u00a0 as well as animal health care cost, end of life, and palliative care.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n

“One can immediately see all the overlaps and learning opportunities that will add to students medical education<\/a>, Noone said. \u00a0“We expect that most students will avail of this course towards the end of their medical school careers during the Individualization Phase.”<\/p>\n
