The UNC Hypertension Clinic at Meadowmont has been awarded the American Heart Association\u2019s Comprehensive Hypertension Center Certification to recognize the practice\u2019s commitment to following proven, research-based treatment guidelines to care for people with complex or difficult-to-treat hypertension, or high blood pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cNearly half of the American population over age 20 has hypertension and many do not know it,\u201d said Raven Voora<\/a>, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving high blood pressure can increase the risk of heart attack, kidney disease and stroke. The UNC Hypertension Clinic is thoroughly committed to providing our patients with the highest quality hypertension care centered in current scientific research. This hypertension certification recognizes our practice\u2019s commitment to following proven treatment guidelines to fully address the needs of people with hypertension.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"AmericanAccording to the AHA, certified practices must be primarily devoted to patients with hypertension and related disorders, be recognized as referral and treatment resources for resistant and secondary hypertension and have facilities and personnel capable of assessing and evaluating complicated hypertension problems. Certified Comprehensive Hypertension Centers are recognized as leaders in providing the most up-to-date effective treatment strategies based on current evidence-based research in hypertension.<\/p>\n

The UNC Hypertension Clinic underwent several reviews by American Heart Association (AHA) \u00a0quality improvement specialists, who evaluated the practice\u2019s policies, procedures and operations to ensure appropriate diagnosis, evaluation and treatment protocols were in place and executed for hypertension patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to see the UNC Hypertension Clinic receive this certification, confirming that our patients can be confident in UNC\u2019s treatment of hypertension and its co-morbidities,\u201d said Alan Lee Hinderliter<\/a>, MD, the Henry A. Foscue Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology.<\/p>\n

The goals for the certified Comprehensive Hypertension Center include providing comprehensive and compassionate care of patients with hypertension, participating in hypertension research, and providing training opportunities for students, residents, and fellows.<\/p>\n
