{"id":4023,"date":"2014-03-24T15:11:20","date_gmt":"2014-03-24T19:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/shaheen-appointed-chief-of-division-of-gastroenterology-and-hepatology\/"},"modified":"2023-06-06T16:59:14","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T20:59:14","slug":"shaheen-appointed-chief-of-division-of-gastroenterology-and-hepatology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/news\/shaheen-appointed-chief-of-division-of-gastroenterology-and-hepatology\/","title":{"rendered":"Shaheen appointed Chief of Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- description --><\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">Dr. Nicholas Shaheen had served as interim division chief since July 1, 2013, after Robert Sandler, MD, MPH, stepped down to focus his efforts on the research activities of the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-section\">\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/shaheen-appointed-chief-of-division-of-gastroenterology-and-hepatology-image2.jpeg\" alt=\"image2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\" class=\"plain\">\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/past-fellows-and-former-faculty\/nicholas-j-shaheen-md-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicholas Shaheen<\/a>, MD, MPH, has been appointed chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, effective Feb 28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Shaheen is an internationally recognized clinician, educator and investigator and has excelled in a number of important administrative roles at UNC,\u201d said Marschall Runge, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Medicine and Executive Dean for the School of Medicine. \u201cI am confident that he will do an outstanding job in leading one of the world\u2019s elite programs in gastrointestinal diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shaheen is Professor of Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the UNC School of Public Health. He joined the UNC faculty in 1998, after earning his medical degree at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, where he also fulfilled his internship and residency requirements.<\/p>\n<p>He is the Director of the Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing and is an expert on Barrett\u2019s esophagus, reflux disease, and esophageal cancer. Dr. Shaheen has authored national guidelines for GERD, Barrett\u2019s esophagus, eosinophilic esophagitis, and the use of upper endoscopy, and serves as Senior Associate Editor for the American
