{"id":4045,"date":"2015-05-07T19:45:07","date_gmt":"2015-05-07T23:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/unc-faculty-author-four-key-publications-in-gastroenterology-and-hepatology\/"},"modified":"2023-06-06T17:03:30","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T21:03:30","slug":"unc-faculty-author-four-key-publications-in-gastroenterology-and-hepatology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/news\/unc-faculty-author-four-key-publications-in-gastroenterology-and-hepatology\/","title":{"rendered":"UNC faculty author four key publications in gastroenterology and hepatology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- description --><\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">According to a list recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, UNC Gastroenterology and Hepatology faculty authored four of the 12 key publications in gastroenterology and hepatology published in 2014.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-section\">\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/unc-faculty-author-four-key-publications-in-gastroenterology-and-hepatology-image2.png\" alt=\"image2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">This study, which was authored by members of UNC&#8217;s GI division, has been recognized as one of 12 key publications in gastroenterology and hepatology published in 2014.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content-area\">\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\" class=\"plain\">\n<p>Each year, the <em>Annals of Internal Medicine<\/em> publishes a review of all the key studies that have shaped clinical practice during the preceding 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>In the journal&#8217;s most recent <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/annals.org\/article.aspx?articleid=2281171&amp;resultClick=3\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Update in Gastroenterology and Hepatology<\/a>, faculty from UNC&#8217;s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology authored or co-authored four of the 12 published journal articles that were identified as key publications in the field published in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nine separate UNC GI faculty are represented among the authors of these studies,&#8221; said <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/past-fellows-and-former-faculty\/nicholas-j-shaheen-md-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicholas Shaheen<\/a>, MD, MPH, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. &#8220;Clearly our division is strongly shaping how gastroenterology is practiced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, two of the remaining eight journal articles were written by graduates of UNC&#8217;s GI fellowship program.<\/p>\n<p>The articles, and their UNC authors, are:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis in the United States,&#8221; published in <em>Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.<\/em><br \/>\nUNC authors: <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/evan-s-dellon-md-mph-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evan S. Dellon<\/a>, Christopher F. Martin, <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/past-fellows-and-former-faculty\/nicholas-j-shaheen-md-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicholas J. Shaheen<\/a>, Michael D. Kappelman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Multitarget stool DNA testing for colorectal-cancer screening,&#8221; published in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>.<br \/>\nUNC co-author: <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/past-fellows-and-former-faculty\/david-f-ransohoff-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David F. Ransohoff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Risk of cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases: a nationwide population-based cohort study with 30 years of follow-up evaluation,&#8221; published in <em>Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology<\/em>.<br \/>\nUNC authors: Michael D. Kappelman, <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/past-fellows-and-former-faculty\/millie-d-long-md-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Millie D. Long<\/a>, <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/past-fellows-and-former-faculty\/robert-s-sandler-md-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert S. Sandler<\/a>, <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/past-fellows-and-former-faculty\/todd-baron-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Todd Baron<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ledipasvir and sofosbuvir for 8 or 12 weeks for chronic HCV without cirrhosis,&#8221; published in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>.<br \/>\nUNC co-author: <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/michael-w-fried-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael W.
