LGBT Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969.
\nIn the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City. This raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents marked by police roughly hauling employees and patrons out of the bar. Six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement ensued.<\/p>\n

The Stonewall Riots (also sometimes referred to as the Stonewall Uprising) served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. Many pride events are held during the month of June to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the world. As well as being a month long celebration, Pride month is also an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community. Parades are a prominent feature of Pride month, and there are many street parties, community events, poetry readings, public speaking, street festivals and educational sessions.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the COVID 19 pandemic forced many of the planned events throughout our state of NC and the country to be cancelled this year.\u00a0 Despite this disappointment, we can take a moment to reflect on the many incremental accomplishments to push for equal rights, and engage in opportunities to educate ourselves and community.<\/p>\n
