Commins, MD, PhD<\/a>, discussed sudden meat allergies, reactions to infusion medications and certain tick bites in his recent interview with Frank Stasio on WUNC&#8217;s The State of Things.<\/p>\n<p>Unraveling the mysterious meat allergy began with two questions. What was causing a first-time reaction for cancer patients after receiving an infusion medicine, and why were they primarily in the south? Then, coincidentally, why were patients coming into the <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"allergy_clinic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uncmedicalcenter.org\/uncmc\/care-treatment\/allergy-immunology\/?utm_source=Paid_Search&amp;utm_campaign=UNC_Allergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNC Allergy &amp; Immunology Clinic<\/a> with allergies to beef, pork, or lamb? A lab test soon discovered these patients were reacting to a sugar called <em>alpha-gal, <\/em>believed to be related to tick bites.
