PSTP is a pipeline to recruit, train, and retain promising individuals and provide them with support and mentorship to cultivate their research programs.<\/p>\n<p>The PSTP supports physician scientists at both the resident or fellowship level and the early stage faculty level. In the inaugural cycle of applications for this program, four individuals were inducted into this prestigious program.<\/p>\n<p>In this round, two awards were given at the resident\/fellowship level to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/infdis\/education\/fellowship-program\/our-trainees\/\"><b>Alena Markmann, MS, MD, PhD<\/b><\/a>, clinical fellow in the division of infectious diseases in the UNC Department of Medicine, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/erin-steinbach\/\"><b>Erin Steinbach, MD, PhD<\/b><\/a><b>,\u00a0<\/b>clinical fellow in allergy and immunology \u2013 a joint fellowship between the UNC Department of Medicine and the UNC Department of Pediatrics.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/tessa-andermann\/\"><b>Tessa Andermann, MD, MPH<\/b><\/a><b>,\u00a0<\/b>assistant professor in the UNC Department of Medicine<b>\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/infdis\/ideel\/directory\/peyton-wilson\/\"><b>Peyton Thompson,<\/b>\u00a0<b>MD, MSCR<\/b><\/a><b>,\u00a0<\/b>clinical assistant professor in the UNC Department of Pediatrics, received support at the early stage faculty level.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.unchealthcare.org\/som-vital-signs\/2020\/july-23\/four-scholars-named-to-physician-scientist-training-program?utm_source=vs-email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=30\">UNC Health and UNC School of Medicine Newsroom.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the\u00a0Forward Together\u00a0Strategic Plan, the UNC School of Medicine Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) supports a small number of clinicians committed to translating research findings to advance the practice of medicine in addition to providing clinical care and teaching.
