Millie Long, MD, MPH, with Stephen Kennedy, PhD<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Stephen Mark Kennedy, PhD, long-time coordinator for the UNC Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program, died Friday, July 24.\u00a0 He served UNC for more than 30 years and was an integral leader of the fellowship program over the course of his long career. He guided more than 100 fellows through the program, providing support and nurturing every step of the way. He retired from UNC in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will always remember his warm smile, friendship, kind nature and advocacy for all of our fellows–both current and former,\u201d said Millie Long, MD, MPH, associate professor and program director for the UNC Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellow Program.<\/p>\n

To honor Steve and his commitment to the UNC Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program, the Stephen Mark Kennedy Memorial Fund<\/strong> <\/a>was developed, with support from Steve\u2019s brother Don Kennedy, to fund cultural experiences for fellows within the Triangle area.<\/p>\n

Kennedy was a tremendous fan of the arts, whether he was listening to Aretha Franklin music, attending performances at the Durham Performing Arts Center, or visiting art museums.\u00a0The Stephen Mark Kennedy Memorial Fund<\/strong> <\/a>will provide fellows with cultural opportunities, such as free admission to performances at DPAC or PlayMakers Theatre.<\/p>\n

Studies have shown visual arts provide a value beyond the joy and pleasure experienced. In medical education and training, the arts can build visual and observational literacy, improving the skills needed for diagnosis, prognostication and treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that all who knew and loved Steve will consider making a tax-deductible contribution to this fund in his honor.\u201d<\/p>\n
