Michael Herce, MD, MPH<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Michael Herce<\/a><\/strong>, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases, and Amir Barzin, DO, assistant professor in the department of family medicine, were interviewed by the News & Observer<\/a> while providing drive through testing in Lee County.<\/p>\n

The article reported the testing event was the fifth that UNC has held in Sanford with the county and Piedmont Health Services since June. Herce told the N&O that “UNC decided to organize the events after large numbers of Latino workers from Chatham and Lee counties began showing up at the hospital in Chapel Hill with COVID-19 having not seen a doctor or been tested.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really trying to get upstream of a problem that we saw in the hospital,\u201d Herce said.<\/p>\n

Hispanics make up about 10% of North Carolina\u2019s population, but account for 38% of coronavirus cases in the state,\u00a0according to DHHS<\/a>. Herce said about a quarter of people UNC has tested in Sanford have been Hispanic and that 40% of them have been found to carry the virus.<\/p>\n
