Didactic coursework and clinical skills training had to be quickly converted to an online format and clinical rotations were suspended as decisions were quickly made to ensure residents had meaningful and robust curricular activities during the clinical suspensions. It was against this backdrop that a new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1-EiJ79jdplFQCp3PDMwna9e6l9oC42WhVWTzrXTVpiE\/edit?usp=sharing\">COVID-19 elective<\/a> <\/strong>was formalized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents at any level can now sign up for this new elective and get great exposure to acute respiratory distress syndrome,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/henderson\/\"><strong>Ashley\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/henderson\/\"><strong>Henderson<\/strong><\/a>, MD, associate professor in the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45874\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 273px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2020\/08\/mcentee-henderson.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-45874\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2020\/08\/mcentee-henderson-300x203.png\" alt=\"mcentee-henderson\" width=\"263\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2020\/08\/mcentee-henderson-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2020\/08\/mcentee-henderson-301x203.png 301w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2020\/08\/mcentee-henderson.png 388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"discreet\">Jennifer McEntee, MD, and Ashley Henderson, MD<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to teach oxygen and ventilator strategies for COVID-19 and give residents experience providing direct patient care so that they can gain a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology and management of ARDS related to COVID-19. In addition, they can have first-hand experience at treating the multi-organ effects of COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newly-launched elective offers three options for residents. They can choose two weeks in the ICU on the COVID-19 team, two weeks on Med Z (the COVID floor), or one week with the ICU COVID team followed by one week with Med Z.
