To reduce this risk, many patients are prescribed anticoagulant medications such as warfarin, apixaban, or rivaroxaban.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47258\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 160px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-47258\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2020\/10\/unc-medical-center-implants-100th-watchman-device-image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"unc-medical-center-implants-100th-watchman-device-image-2\" width=\"150\" height=\"130\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"discreet\">The WATCHMAN left atrial appendage device.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Often times, however, patients are not suited for long-term anticoagulation therapy. They may have had a prior bleeding event with anticoagulation, have a predisposition to bleeding, or felt to be too high risk for anticoagulation because of a risk for falls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAF-related strokes can be devastating,\u201d said\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/anil-gehi\/\">Anil Gehi<\/a><\/strong>, MD, Sewell Family-McAllister Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the division of cardiology and the director of clinical cardiac electrophysiology at UNC Medical Center. \u201cIn the past there was no good option for patients with AF who were not candidates for long-term anticoagulation \u2013 they just had to take their chances. But now, left atrial appendage occlusion with the WATCHMAN allows for a low-risk alternative option.
