It\u2019s important to know the risk factors of chronic kidney disease, like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and family history of kidney disease, among others. Kidney disease can also be caused by glomerular diseases, autoimmune disease, or can be a genetic disease. Kidney disease usually has no early symptoms. Therefore, it\u2019s important to be tested. While there is no cure, it can be treated, and many cases of kidney disease are preventable.<\/em><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Our Division of Nephrology and Hypertension and the UNC Kidney Center at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill are working together to reduce the incidence and burden of kidney disease, focusing on enhancing and integrating first-in-class research, providing outstanding patient care, and training the next generation of leading kidney specialists. Nationally recognized nephrology experts maintain and continuously expand a robust clinical, translational and basic research portfolio that encompasses acute, chronic and autoimmune diseases of the kidney. Patients receive world-class care that incorporates the latest medical findings while being treated in a compassionate, patient-centered environment.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few highlighted educational resources created by the <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/unckidneycenter.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNC Kidney Center<\/a>, featuring UNC faculty and patients.<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span class=\"blue\">Dialysis Research Video<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\" \">\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.2 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" style=\"float: right; \" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6CZErr7-eJ8\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">Research can create better futures for people on dialysis, those who care for them in clinics and those who care for them at home. However, many aspects of dialysis research can be improved. Diverse dialysis stakeholders have identified increasing research knowledge among patients and clinic personnel as key to fostering research ready clinic cultures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">To help promote research readiness in dialysis clinics, <a href=\"http:\/\/unckidneycenter.org\/about\/directory\/jennifer-e-flythe\">Dr. Jenny Flythe<\/a> and an interdisciplinary research team developed a 9-minute video to teach patients and clinical staff about research and generate enthusiasm about dialysis research. The video features a dialysis patient and nurse and its content was informed by input from over 75 stakeholders, including almost 30 patients and care partners. The video answers such questions as \u201cWhat is research?\u201d, \u201cHow do researchers keep study participants safe?\u201d and \u201cWhy might I want to participate in research?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A product of the study is a new <a href=\"http:\/\/go.unc.edu\/DialysisResearchVideo\">video<\/a> tool Flythe hopes will generate awareness by sparking new conversations about dialysis research in the clinical setting.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span class=\"blue\">Kidney Transplant Patient Story<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"blue\">\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.2 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" style=\"float: right; \" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/371194838&#038;color=%23ff5500&#038;auto_play=false&#038;hide_related=false&#038;show_comments=true&#038;show_user=true&#038;show_reposts=false&#038;show_teaser=true&#038;visual=true\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\" \">As part of the Department of Medicine&#8217;s recent podcast series, &#8220;Understanding Organ Transplant,&#8221; Dr. Ron Falk welcomes Kevin Howell, who is a kidney transplant recipient. Kevin shares his story about getting sick and the challenges he had accepting reality. And then, how his life changed after having a kidney transplant.
