While the pandemic made this year particularly challenging for fellowship recruitment efforts and interviews, a series of videos showing each program\u2019s strengths was a creative solution, introducing viewers to faculty and current fellows, with a brief glimpse into what it might be like to join the program. And although it was impossible to replicate the experience of visiting in-person, the UNC Department of Medicine came as close as possible by meeting candidates through video interviews. In the end, program directors are very pleased to recognize the following new fellows who recently matched to subspecialty training programs. They will start July 1, 2021.<\/p>\n

\"\"Alice Ma<\/a><\/strong>, MD, Director, Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program: <\/em>“I need to commend our current fellows who really took on the challenge of showing residents who may not have had any connection to the Triangle\u2014what it would be like to live and work here\u2014They did this using a variety of ways \u2013they hosted Zoom dinners and Instagram Live events.\u00a0 They reached out to applicants, and the applicants thought we did the very best job in conveying the \u201cfeel\u201d and \u201cculture\u201d of the program of any other hem\/onc fellowship.\u00a0 Due to this, we recruited 4 trainees who have never been in NC let alone the Triangle.\u00a0 This is a stupendous achievement. Our faculty, Terri King, our amazing fellowship coordinator, our admin staff and IT support from the DOM also stepped up to make the Zoom interview process seamless.<\/em><\/p>\n

“We were able to have fellows meet with other faculty outside of the division actually more easily by Zoom than in person\u2014less schlepping across campus\u2014more interactive time.\u00a0 We were thus able to recruit someone with a PhD in nanotechnology\u2014who will likely work with a faculty in Radiation Oncology with a nanotechnology lab.<\/em><\/p>\n

“All in all\u2014this was a surprisingly wonderful recruitment season\u2014filled with anxiety and the unknown\u2014but due to resilience and flexibility and effort and enthusiasm\u2014we did well in the match and are looking to train another class of amazing fellows.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
