Nicholas Shaheen, MD, MPH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been recognized as one of the \u201cBest Global Universities for Gastroenterology and Hepatology\u201d by U.S. News and World Report<\/em><\/a>. UNC GI and Hepatology was ranked 6th<\/sup> in the US and 11th<\/sup> globally.<\/p>\n

The rankings are based on a number of criteria including reputational indicators, global and regional research reputation, bibliometric indicators, publications, citation impact, total citations, most-cited publications, and scientific excellence indicators.<\/p>\n

Each year the UNC GI Division publishes more than 200 unique papers and receives approximately $20 million in external grant support. Members of the Division have published national guidelines in nearly every therapeutic area.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delighted that US News has recognized the research strengths at UNC in Gastroenterology and Hepatology\u2019 said Robert Sandler<\/a>, MD, director of the UNC Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease and the John C. and Nina T. Sessions Distinguished Professor of Medicine. \u201cOur professional colleagues around the country have long known of our research and clinical strengths, so it is great to be finally recognized by US News<\/em>.<\/p>\n

At UNC, clinical, basic and translational research is supported by the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD<\/a>). The CGIBD is one of 19 NIH-supported digestive disease research core centers. The Center, funded since 1985, provides core services, enrichment activities, and administrative support.<\/p>\n
