Giselle Corbie-Smith, MD, MSc, professor of medicine in the division of general medicine and the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Social Medicine, was featured on WRAL’s On the Record<\/a> where she<\/span><\/span>\u00a0explained the idea of vaccine deliberation.<\/p>\n

“The decision is being made cautiously, by many Black and Brown patients as they experience health care systems that have yet to demonstrate that they value their lives as highly as the lives of other populations,” said Corbie-Smith. “They are looking to see what happens to their family members. There are looking to see the side effects from their loved ones. They are looking at the statistics about general side effects. They are looking to see how much do you care. Are you really making sure that we actually have access in our community?”<\/p>\n

Dr. Corbie-Smith also talked with The Atlantic<\/em><\/a> about vaccine deliberation and participated in another panel discussion with The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“What the pandemic has revealed to many that aren’t typically in this space as our panelists are, is that the health and inequalities are long and enduring and entrenched,” she explained. “If we’re not careful in this moment in time to really capture and take advantage of the way we need to rework our healthcare system, we’ll be back in the same place in a couple years.”<\/p>\n

Corbie-Smith is nationally recognized for her scholarly work on the inclusion of disparity populations in research, and has over a decade of experience in using community engagement to conduct innovative, translational health equity research.
