{"id":54218,"date":"2021-08-04T17:27:14","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T21:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/?p=54218"},"modified":"2023-06-06T18:12:55","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T22:12:55","slug":"jain-receives-three-teaching-awards-during-the-whitehead-awards-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/news\/jain-receives-three-teaching-awards-during-the-whitehead-awards-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Jain Receives Three Teaching Awards During the Whitehead Awards Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_6041\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 257px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/koyal-jain.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6041 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/945\/2018\/12\/koyal-jain.jpeg\" alt=\"koyal-jain\" width=\"247\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Koyal Jain, MD, MPH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/koyal-jain\/\">Koyal Jain<\/a>, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine in the division of nephrology and hypertension, received three teaching awards at the 2021 Whitehead Lecture and Award Ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Jain was awarded the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/wms\/events\/annual-whitehead-lecture\/\">Hyman\u00a0L.\u00a0Battle\u00a0Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award in the Foundation Phase<\/a>.&#8221; This award was established to recognize the most outstanding educator overall for the preclinical curriculum (MS1 and MS2).<\/p>\n<p>She also received the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/wms\/events\/annual-whitehead-lecture\/\">Foundation\u00a0Phase\u00a0Outstanding\u00a0Director\u00a0Teaching Award,<\/a>&#8221; recognizing exemplary teaching in the Foundation Phase by a course director, and the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/wms\/events\/annual-whitehead-lecture\/\">Best Foundation Phase Block Award<\/a>,&#8221; recognizing the best course in the pre-clinical curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Jain was praised for her efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/nephrologys-renal-block-lecture-a-day-in-the-life-praised-by-students\/\">create new connections with her students during the pandemic year<\/a>. \u00a0A highlight of the nephrology curriculum was the Department of Medicine&#8217;s &#8220;A Day in the Life&#8221; series. Joined by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/keisha-gibson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keisha Gibson<\/a>, MD,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/gerald-hladik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry Hladik<\/a>, MD, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/prabir-roy-chaudhury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prabir Roy-Chaudhury<\/a>, MD, Jain took a group of medical students and undergraduates through an immersive look behind the curtain of a nephrologist\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>The UNC School of Medicine&#8217;s Student Government, formerly known as the Whitehead Medical Society, was named in honor of Dr. Richard H. Whitehead, who served as Dean from 1890-1905. The Whitehead Lecture was established in 1947 to recognize the high standards and leadership of Dr. Whitehead and has been an annual event since 1980.
